Sunday, March 9 th Nellie Sheehan Matthew 5:1-12 1 When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds, he climbed a hillside. Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving at a quiet place, he sat down 2 and taught his climbing companions. This is what he said: 3 You re blessed when you re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule. 4 You re blessed when you feel you ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. 5 You re blessed when you re content with just who you are no more, no less. That s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can t be bought. 6 You re blessed when you ve worked up a good appetite for God. He s food and drink in the best meal you ll ever eat. 7 You re blessed when you care. At the moment of being careful, you find yourselves cared for. 3

8 You re blessed when you get your inside world your mind and heart put right. Then you can see God in the outside world. 9 You re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God s family. 10 You re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God s kingdom. 11 Not only that count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. 12 You can be glad when that happens give a cheer, even! for though they don t like it, I do! And all heaven applauds. And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble. Matthew 5:5, Blessed are the gentle, because they will inherit the earth. (HCSB) Misalignment Alignment Matthew 5:6, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled. (HCSB) TRUTH We all hunger and thirst for something. Signs of what you are hungering and thirsting for: 1. What do you THINK about most often? 2. What do you prioritize your TIME around? 3. What do you spend your money TREASURE on? MISALIGNMENT Let me show you 3 common misaligned desires. 5

Isaiah 14:13-14, I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. (NIV) Lucifer had a hunger and thirst for power. Matthew 25:41 & Revelation 20:10 He is thrown into Hell. Daniel 4:28-30, All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of 12 months, as he was walking on the roof of the royal palace in Babylon, the king exclaimed, Is this not Babylon the Great that I have built by my vast power to be a royal residence and to display my majestic glory? (HCSB) Nebuchadnezzar had a hunger and thirst for praise. Daniel 4:31-32, While the words were still in the king s mouth, a voice came from heaven: King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared that the kingdom has departed from you. You will be driven away from people to live with the wild animals, and you will feed on grass like cattle for seven periods of time, until you acknowledge that the Most High is ruler over the kingdom of men, and He gives it to anyone He wants. (HCSB) Luke 12:16-21, A rich man s land was very productive. He thought to himself, What should I do, 6

since I don t have anywhere to store my crops? I will do this, he said. I ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there. Then I ll say to myself, You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself. (HCSB) The rich fool had a hunger and thirst for pleasure. Luke 12:20-21, But God said to him, You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared whose will they be? That s how it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. (HCSB) ALIGNMENT Matthew 5:6, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled. (HCSB) BEING - Salvation Romans 1:17, This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, It is through faith that a righteous person has life. (NLT) DOING Lives of Credibility 7

James 2:17, Faith that doesn t show itself by good works is no faith at all-it is dead and useless. (TLB) REALIGNMENT Daily, listen and obey the Holy Spirit s Word. Quickly confess your own sinfulness. Continually pray for more of the Lord s glory in your life. 8
