This weekend all the parishes in the Diocese of Albany will take up the Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign. Information is available on the USCCB website to deepen our faith through podcasts and daily bible readings, Catholic television, and radio broadcasts. In our diocese we are able to provide television, radio and print materials that spread the Good News of Christ s abiding love for each and every one of us, such as the weekly Sunday Mass presentation of Table of the Lord, on our local television stations. Let us pray as a community that the Good News of the Gospel will continue to be spread by wise use of communications technology. Please be generous! HAPPY FATHER S DAY! Homily Reflections Solemnity of Pentecost Jewish Pentecost celebrated God giving Moses the Commandments- Giving of the Covenant after the Exodus. 50 days- A Week of Weeks if you count the beginning and the end you get 50! The Christian Pentecost - 50 Days after Jesus rose - the Spirit came upon the disciples who transformed the 11 into Apostles. The Eleven did not become apostles with Jesus they were His disciples. Only with Pentecost we can speak of apostles. So What to Say about the Spirit? It s difficult to speak in specific terms about the Spirit. So we have many metaphors Fire Spring of Water Seal that Marks us and claims us for God God s Embrace Joy Wind Breath Harmony Pledge Bond of communion Transformer Holiness Balm Beauty Dew Fall- a favorite we hear in the Eucharistic Prayer sometimes in the Sequence today Veni, Creator Spiritus written by an Archbishop of Canterbury in the 13 th century. Wisdom- Wisdom was the highest gift of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit- Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord and so on many metaphors - not because of the feebleness of the mind but because The Spirit is Not an Object of Knowledge that can viewed. There is no Self Presentation of the Spirit as with the Father and the Son, the Word. Only the Holy Spirit experienced a Name change My first priestly assignment was a parish in Omaha, Nebraska - Holy Ghost Parish. We speak of the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. We speak of the twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is known only in what it brings about in other things including us Thus the birthing of Church. Come Holy Spirit Fill the Hearts of Your Faithful Happy Pentecost Birthing. John P Rosson - June 8, 2014

Annual Catholic Appeal Catholic Diocese of Albany I know and well appreciate that many if not all of us are facing difficulties in terms of making all the ends meet. In times such as these, when public resources are shrinking, the work of the Church in ministering to those in need becomes greater. Our St. Mary s parish family is part of a greater community, a larger family, a diocesan family. Every year for 60 years, our Bishop now Edward Scharfenberger, the chief shepherd of our diocesan family has appealed to his people to support the good works of the Church to ensure that the mission of Jesus, here in His Church of Albany, goes forward. Every year for the past 60 years that family has come together to support the programs, ministries and services which assist many thousands of people in the 14 counties of our diocese in a wide variety of ways. Each year the generosity of our diocesan family has enabled Catholic Charities to provide housing, food and counseling to the needy. Our Vocations office has supported and nurtured men and women hearing God s call to the priesthood consecrated life. Central support services that are essential to operate human service programs are funded through the generosity of donors to this Appeal. I encourage you to read the brochure that is in your pew and ask that you contribute as generously as you can to this Appeal. You may find more information online at www.thebishopsappeal.org. Thank you! St. John reminds- God is Love. A great manifestation of that love is when we extend in His name to each other as brothers and sisters. Let us support this Easter Appeal, the Annual Catholic Appeal for Catholic Charities. Preparation for Pentecost Photos by Donna Gerard
