Enter God s Peace Contemplative Retreat Friday April 5 Sunday April 7, 2019 Arrowhead Camp and Retreat Center near Glen Rose, Texas The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you, and give you peace. Numbers 26:24-26
Enter God s Peace With the hurry, noise, and activity of our daily lives, it is difficult to listen for God s unfailing love and transforming presence amid the challenges and the changes. This year s Contemplative Retreat will provide an opportunity to claim a quiet and restful time of personal renewal -- a time to hear what God may have for you as a gift of spiritual refreshment even transformation. The beautiful wooded setting of Camp Arrowhead on the banks of the Brazos River will immerse you in the wonders of God s creation. The time of contemplation will open your heart to prayerful listening and entering God s peace. RETREAT HISTORY Contemplative Retreat an annual event since 1995 was initially planned by members of Lake Shore, Broadway, and Wilshire Baptist churches. Those churches continue to bless the collaboration, and participants from many other congregations have joined in. Though begun by Baptists, all who seek a contemplative experience of Christian community are welcome. Our prayer is that the whole body of Christ will be strengthened by what happens among us. Join us as we seek to embrace unfailing love and mercy of God s faithful promises. His Spirit will meet you there, as sure as the sunrise. RETREAT EXPERIENCE The structure for the retreat is intentionally very open. While you can arrive earlier if you desire, the entire group will gather on Friday evening for a time of fellowship followed by a shared meal. Leadership for the weekend will be shared by laity who will guide us into the contemplative experience on Friday evening. Saturday will be spent in intentional quietness, with optional experiences available including intercessory prayer, art, crafts, Christian yoga, healing service, resource library for reading, and group hiking. After breakfast on Sunday morning, we will share what we have experienced and learned during our season of personal silence, reflection, listening and shared contemplation, followed by a time of worship and a shared meal before returning home. You are free to rest, read, journal, explore, reflect, create, walk along the Brazos River, or whatever you wish during the dedicated time of intentional listening prayer and quiet contemplation.
A RETREAT with Silence. huh? You mean nobody talks the whole weekend? Why would anyone want to do that? It's an intriguing idea, but You may have questions about the retreat. If so, those of us who have found this annual retreat to be a significant part of our spiritual journeys want to address your reservations and encourage you to come. Prayer is more than "talking to God." In fact, the better part of prayer is listening to God. But we live in a noisy world, and despite our need and/or best intentions, that noise and our own busyness often distract us and may damage our spirits. In our daily lives, we have little chance of hearing "the still small voice." Those of us who plan this experience can remember our own uncertainty the first time we came. Perhaps it will help if we tell you something about the intent, expectations, and process, so you can better decide whether this is a way you wish to spend a weekend. First of all, the experience is not all done in contemplative silence. The weekend is "bookended" by times of guided sharing (much like any other retreat experience) on Friday evening and Sunday morning. Between those two group sessions, we talk as little as possible, and join in optional guided experiences designed to help us slow down and quietly listen to God. Those may include guided intercessory prayer, a nature hike, a shared resource library, journaling, walking a labyrinth, guided yoga, contemplative music, artistic opportunities for self-expression, a healing service and a special Lent experience. It's your choice whether or not you participate in any of these optional experiences, but most who come have found they provide helpful structure for the intentional quietness and contemplation. You decide what nurtures your spirit and embraces God s unfailing love. We hope this answers some of your questions about choosing to join us at our Contemplative Retreat this year.
