It was the We Are All Witnesses banner featuring Lebron James that towered high amidst the Cleveland skyline. When James returned, it was replaced with a different Lebron image and the catchy slogan was retired. In the midst of the Cavs playoff run this spring, I couldn t help but think about this slogan in light of our readings today. We celebrate the Feast of the Ascension and the daunting reality that the Lord is leaving the earth in his physical form. He has fulfilled his earthly mission and is now ready to inherit his place at the right hand of the Father in heaven. But who then will continue Jesus presence in the world? Our readings today give us a scary answer you and me! Both the first reading and the gospel have Jesus calling on the apostles to be his witnesses in the world. They have witnessed what he has done and taught and now they have the responsibility of sharing that witness with others. We, as believers in the 21 st century, stand on the eyewitness testimony of these first apostles, as well as the testimony of our personal encounter with the Lord, in bearing witness to the Lord s presence among us. We are all witnesses of these things; things much more powerful and profound than even Lebron James! One final thought: the Ascension is all about Jesus being lifted up into heaven. Do we by our lives lift others up or tear them down? We are called to help others ascend in their lives and uplift them to the best of our ability. By doing so, we help to carry out the mission of Jesus. Let us grow together in Christ, Fr. Jeremy Miller

Thank you! May 15 is Pentecost Sunday Share the Spirit - wear RED. Jubilee year of Mercy The Ascension of the Lord As the liturgical year and this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy unfold, we reflect on what Jesus ascension meant for the first disciples and means now for us. Stay in Jerusalem, Jesus had instructed, awaiting the promise of the Father. In a few days you will be baptized with the Hold Spirit. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:4-5, 8). Despite Jesus absence, they wait with great joy... continually in the temple praising God (Luke 24:52-53). But as we join them, waiting and worshiping, the enduring challenge theirs and ours is delivered by two men in white (Acts 1:10). In every age, disciples must stop looking at the sky, head down the mountain, and go back into the world, commissioned, says Pope Francis, to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel. inviting everyone to find in our parishes, communities, associations and movements... Wherever there are Christians... An oasis of mercy (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Papal quotes Copyright 2015, Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Page 8 St. Peter s Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio may 8, 2016 Blessing for Mothers, Pregnant Women, Trying to Conceive, In the Adoption Process, Mourning Loss of Child Gracious Father, your Word, spoken in love, created the human family and, in the fullness of time, your Son, conceived in love, restored us to your family. Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless all mothers, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Bless the pregnant women gathered here today, who await the birth of their child. Fill these women with peace and joy as they treasure the gift of life within, and calm their fears when they are anxious. Watch over and support these mothers and bring their children into this world safely and in good health. Bless the women who desire to conceive. Grant them your hope and surround them with your love as they anticipate the conception of a child. For those women having difficulty conceiving, protect them from all discouragement and anxiety and help them to place their trust in you during this difficult time. Bless the women who are in the process of adopting a child. May they feel your love, and be filled with hope as they look forward to adopting one of your sons or daughters. Support these women as they go through the home study process, as they wait to meet their child, and as they finalize the adoption. Bless the women who have experienced the loss of a pregnancy or infant. Soothe their hearts and grant that through the prayers of Mary, who grieved the death of her Son, you may enlighten their faith, give hope to their hearts, and peace to their lives. Grant mercy to women that are mourning and comfort them with the knowledge that you are holding them and their children close to you, until they can meet again in the life of heaven. We ask all of these prayers through Christ our Lord, Amen. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Because Stephen professes his faith in the Son of Man, he is stoned to death (Acts 7:55-60). Chinese proverb Mother s Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the unconditional love of mothers. Whether living or dead, a mother s love always invites us to follow her example by loving generously and selflessly. ~ by Bud Ozar
