What do you think the terms morals and ethics mean? Journal Entry: What instances have you witnessed people making both good and bad moral decisions? (See sheet)

Morality Standards of right and wrong; the principles underlying what is believed to be good or bad behaviour; the standard on which ethical choices are based.

Ethics - Having to do with choosing a right action over a wrong action; deciding between moral principles to determine the best moral action; the study of the principles that govern how we decide what is right and what is wrong. http://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=2h9nd9udrka&featur e=related

What is a moral dilemma? What are some examples of moral dilemma s? (Class discussion)

Moral Dilemma - Situations in which each possible course of action breaches some otherwise binding moral principle

What Would You Do? Use Yes and No Signs for each side of the classroom. Would you cheat on a term paper or test if you really need the mark to pass the course or to get into a university or college? You may have a friend that she suspects has an eating disorder. Should you talk to a teacher or parent about it? Maybe there is a big party coming up that you want to attend. You know your parents will never let you go. Is it all right for you to lie and tell your parents you are is going over to a friend's house? How do you feel about animal testing? Would you use products that have been tested on animals?

You find out that your best friend s Boyfriend/ Girlfriend kissed someone else over the weekend. Do you tell your friend? You have accepted an invitation to a good friend s party, then you are invited to a party that you think would be more fun. Would you think of an excuse not to go to your friend s party? If you found your friend s personal journal, would you read it? Would you tell a secret that a friend told you?

Ben said good-bye to his friends and started heading for home. As he passed the last row of stores before the hill leading to his house something caught his eye at the bank. Something was sticking out of the ATM machine. As he got closer, he saw it was cash. Ben looked around. There was nobody. Whoever took out the money was gone now. He walked over to the machine and took the money out. Sixty dollars. There was also a receipt sticking out. He could turn the money in at the bank tomorrow it was after hours now. But, really, it was sixty bucks! Probably not much to the customer, but it would mean a lot to him. Does it really count if you only do something like this once. It s not like he s a thief or anything He felt pretty good about taking it. It s a one-time deal. And no one ever needs to know. He put the money in his pocket, crumpled up the receipt, and walked away. As the next song started playing, Ben remembered something his grandfather always said, Every time you lie, you get closer to being a liar. But this wasn t the same thing. Was it?

1) Trade places with Ben. What would you do? 2) Would your choice be different if you knew the money belonged to the bank, and not to an individual? 3) Would your choice be affected if there were other people walking by? 4) Have you ever done something you knew was wrong because nobody was watching? How did you feel when you did it? 5) What do you think about what Ben s grandfather says about being a liar? Do you think the same principle applies to Ben s actions?

Yours, Mine, and Ours Journal

Read page 77-78 The major religions and spiritual traditions all teach the importance of families, noting in particular such themes as love and justice within families.

In most religions monogamy is viewed as the traditional marriage structure. Monogamy is being married to only one other person.

Having more than one spouse at the same time. Watch TLC s Sister Wives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juykxj3 VhfY In a journal discuss what you think life would be like as one of Kody s children. How would this be different than living in your family?

All of the religions of the world have something to say on how we should live with each other and treat each other.

Sacred Texts - devoted or dedicated to a deity or to some religious purpose; consecrated. Often looked at by the followers of that religion with reverence

In the 20 th century there has been a movement by the different denominations (ie. Roman Catholic, Anglican, Pentecostal, Salvation Army, United Church, etc) of the Christian church to work together and end this separation.

Ecumenism a movement that seeks to achieve unity or co-operation among all Christian believers.

1800 s Groups formed in Europe. Started to share a vision of togetherness. 1948 World Council of churches formed. 1980 - The archbishop of Canterbury joins the bishop of Rome in touring Africa. 1944 - Canadian Council of Churches formed. 1965 - North American Orthodox- Catholic Theological Consultation annual meetings began 1994, March 29 - Evangelicals and Catholics Together Document See fig. 3.6 on page 94

The ecumenical movement has moved from just being about uniting the Christian church to working with people from other world religions (Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, etc) in matters of peace and good will.

Interfaith Dialogue Conversation among followers of different faiths, with the purpose of understanding one another.

Complete word search to familiarize yourself with language associated with the topic of social justice.

Prior to the 20 th century, religious institutions were generally responsible for social programs - providing food, clothing, education, medical care, and shelter to the needy.

Since many governments have reduced spending in social programs religions have had more demands on them to provide for people with social needs.

In a journal entry discuss the following: What instances have you witnessed either in your community, on television, or the internet, where a religious organisation has participated in helping the needy?

In small groups, complete the activity on mixed messages about sex and sexuality.

Community Media Religious groups may encourage teens to abstain from sex until marriage. Health professionals will warn about STD s and promote safe sex. Many religious and community groups teach that adultery and sex outside of marriage is wrong. Portrays teens as sexual objects. Sends the message that all or most teens are having sex. Television, movies and music may give the impression that sexual activity has no moral questions. Media uses sex and sexual images to sell products. It may also give the impression that casual sex is normal for many people. The mix of messages regarding sexuality generates confusion for young people. The media portrayal of sexuality may be considered normal for the viewer. Rather than questioning the media, they will doubt themselves.
