Apr 8, 2018 - Page 3 FATHER ANTHONY S FAITH FORMATION CORNER John 20:21: As the Father Has Sent Me, so I Send You The Gospel reading for the second Sunday of Easter is always John 20:19-31. We know too well the story of the risen Lord appearing to the disciples/ apostles minus Thomas, who firmly declared that he would only believe if he were able to see Jesus. A week later Jesus appeared to them again: this time with Thomas, who exclaimed: My Lord and my God. All this is too familiar However, earlier in this passage, there is another very important statement from the mouth of the Savior: As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Much of our Judeo-Christian faith depends on this saying; and thus, it cannot be just a side-note to the Thomas story! THE IDEA OF SENDING: We do not think about it often, but our faith actually began with a sending forth: Abram was sent by God from his land to an unknown land (Genesis 12). Likewise the disciples of Jesus were sent after his death and resurrection. Any sending forth implies some kind of dying. In the case of Abram, it was the death of old identity: his new name would be Abraham. We can see why the apostles hesitated to be sent out. They preferred to stay in the upper room with doors locked. The risen Lord forced them to go out. They also preferred to stay in Jerusalem, but Jesus sent them forth to the whole world. As they were sent out to proclaim the Gospel to all the nations, they painfully began to discover the loss of their own identity that was solely Jewish. As the first followers of Jesus slowly became Christians, they slowly experienced the death of their privileged Israelite heritage when the Church opened itself to Gentile (non-jewish) believers. In any case, any sending forth is difficult. There was a story in the early Church about Peter who hesitated to go to Rome, his final destination. One day the Lord appeared to him. Peter asked him: Lord where are you going (quo vadis)? Jesus answered that he was going to Rome to be crucified again because he (Peter) refused to go. Ashamed of himself, Peter finally resolved to go. Although this story might have been just a legend, it reminds us that to be sent is always a dangerous business: Peter met his cruel destiny in Rome when he was crucified upside-down. How about us? I remind the first communion children again and again that the MASS Catholics attend every Sunday is actually a sending forth. The word itself is taken from the final dismissal in the old Tridentine rite: Ite MISA est ( Go, it has been sent ). The term mass is related to the term missionary, the one who is sent. In that sense all Christian disciples are called to be sent. But sent for what purpose? Timothy Radcliffe, the English Dominican spiritual author to whom I have been great indebted, in his book Why Go to Church, answers the question at the very end of the book: we go to church to be dismissed, or to be sent away from it. The Lord dismisses us and sends us forth to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom Reflecting on my own situation: I was sent to St. Barbara in 2016. Now I learned that I may be sent somewhere else shortly. As I said, any sending forth is difficult. But at the same time, sending forth is an essential part of being a Christian disciple. Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. God, our shelter and our strength, you listen in love to the cry of your people: hear the prayers we offer for our departed brothers and sisters. Cleanse them of their sins and grant them the fullness of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

This Sunday was once called "Low Sunday," a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or "The Lord's Day for Putting Away the Albs," so no wonder the nickname "Low Sunday" arose. In the old calendar it was also called "Quasimodo Sunday," after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or "As newborn infants," a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo's bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named "Quasimodo" for the feast.
