The Stone Family Reunion 2018 Reunion Invitation We are pleased to invite you to the 116th Stone Family Reunion on July 28 th, 2018. (This invitation is also available online at www.stonefamilyreunion.com). The Reunion will be held at the same facility as last year, the Rush Volunteer Fire Co Auxiliary Hall at Lawton, PA. This facility is located about 5 miles south of the Birchardville Store. Travel to the intersection of Rt 267 and Rt 706 at Lawton (see location map at end.) The Senior Center is a white building located west of the intersection as you travel to route 367 south. Any interested party is welcome to attend. We have lots of comfortable space here, so please attend if you can. Our traditional two business meetings will be conducted (The Stone Reunion and the Stone Street Memorial Association.) This will be the last meeting of the Stone Street Memorial Association as its duties and responsibilities are being assumed by the Stone Street Cemetery Preservation Association, Inc. (SSCPA). Following tradition, Bob and Jessie Carr will display memorabilia from earlier reunions as well as a large panelized family tree. A program will be given following the business meetings. A brief meeting of the Stone Street Cemetery Preservation Association, Inc. (SSCPA) will be held at the end of the activities. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, July 28th at about noon. Serving will begin at 12:30 pm. Main dishes will be provided, but please bring a dish to pass or a dessert. Beverages, plates, cups, and silverware will be provided. If you plan to attend, please let John Buck know by July 12 so that we can plan adequate seating, but come even without a reservation if you have the opportunity (john.stonereunion@gmail.com or 607-656-4781.) Buck (john.stonereunion@gmail.com) Secretary/Historian Jessie (Birchard) Carr (fam531@aol.com) Chaplain Minutes of Stone Family Reunion and Stone Street Memorial Association Meetings of 7/29/17 The combined meetings of the Stone Family Reunion and Stone Street Memorial Association were held at the Rush Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary Hall at Lawton, PA on 7/29/17. This event was the 115th Stone Reunion. Chaplain Jessie Birchard Carr provided a welcome to the attendees and gave the invocation. An excellent buffet meal was provided by the attendees. 1

As by tradition, we started by singing the Stone Reunion song and then passed the hat for contributions, collecting $335. President Betty (Handrick) Baldwin welcomed everyone and recognized the four honorary members in attendance, Ruth (Handrick) Furman, Courtland Bradshaw Birchard, Jane (Bradshaw) Thomas, and Curtis Charles Stone. Each Honorary member spoke, and there were several interesting anecdotes. Betty summarized another year of accomplishments for the organizations. The officers were thanked for their efforts in getting the SSCPA, Inc. underway. The initial SSCPA organizational meeting was held in May, and the Board of Directors elected the same officers that we have for the Stone Family Reunion. Progress continued on the fence at Stone Street Cemetery, with several new fenceposts installed along the front, and the main gate re-hung by John Buck. Sheila (Babcock) Birchard continues to mow the grass at Stone Street and all agreed that it looks well cared for. The website continues to grow as more photos of Reunion members have been added. Minutes and Newsletters from recent years are all available on the website. Lyn Munn made a motion that the reading of the Secretary s minutes from the 2016 Reunion (previously submitted by mail) be dispensed with, and that the minutes be accepted as submitted. Jane (Bradshaw) Thomas seconded and the motion was passed unanimously. John Buck reported on recent correspondence, much included in the Invitation and Minutes sent out in June 2017. Since that time John reported the following additional vital statistics: Eve Elke Dayton born June12, 2017 daughter of Erin & Joe Burkert (from Janet (Colwell) Dayton). Luke William Dayton born July 8, 2017 son of Dierdre & Paul Dayton (from Robert C. Dayton and also from Janet Dayton). Irene (Guck) Dayton died June 7, 2017 wife of George Clifton Dayton (from George Dayton, Robert C. Dayton, and also from Janet Dayton). Chantal Birchard and Justin Castellano married December 17, 2016 Chantal is daughter of Sheila and Denny Birchard (from Eileen Birchard). Michael Anthony Birchard born in April 2017 Michael is the son of Meagan (Petersen) and Anthony Birchard (from Eileen Birchard). Brooke Kyle Dyer born 28 April, 2017 Brooke is the daughter of Shaloam (Birchard) & Evan Dyer (from Eileen Birchard). Bob Carr gave the Treasurers Report and provided separate financial reports for the Stone Family Reunion and the Stone Street Memorial Association (copies included later in these minutes). Bob discussed the rather dismal opportunities for earnings on investments in 2017 but indicated that we would have more flexibility once the newly formed SSCPA assumed investment accounts. Bob also indicated that economic trends seemed to point to modest gains in interest rates. Bob and Betty talked about the Officers recommendation to cease all operations of the Stone Street Memorial Association, and to transfer activities, assets, and liabilities of the SSMA to the newly formed Stone Street Cemetery Preservation Association, Inc. (SSCPA) effective September 1, 2018. That date would allow the orderly transfer of funds at the date of the last treasury bond maturity. After discussion, a motion to accept the officers recommendation, was made by Lyn Munn and was seconded by Shirley Ewain. The motion passed unanimously. Lyn Munn thanked the officers for their contributions of time and operational funds, which were appreciated. Bob Carr made a motion that we contribute an additional $50 to the Rush Volunteer Fire 2

Department in recognition of the excellent facilities they provide. The motion was seconded by Louise Dayton and passed unanimously. Vice President Eileen Birchard opened the floor to discussion of officer elections. She indicated that all five officers were willing to continue serving, but that any nominations from the floor were welcomed. Keith Dayton made a motion that the slate of existing officers be nominated and re-elected; Louise Dayton seconded the motion and the current officers were re-elected. Louise Dayton made a motion that we adjourn the business meeting and move to the program area. Dan Ewain seconded and we adjourned at about 2:45 pm. The first program was presented by Courtland Bradshaw Birchard. Court reviewed how he injured himself working in his stone quarry, and his wife, Mary, had suggested that he resume doing some artwork while he recuperated. Court started doing penciled drawings which came out beautifully (there are two of these images on the Reunion website). Mary encouraged him to try merging his two obvious talents by carving his images on locally mined bluestone. The result was so successful that Mary and Court began a business known as PA BlueArt. Court gave a demonstration of cutting bluestone with a carbide tool and also displayed some beautiful artwork of stone. Eileen Birchard and John Buck also gave a program on Honoring Veteran s Graves at the Stone Street Cemetery. Eileen described how she placed wreaths on Stone Street Veteran s graves and John reviewed the known veterans buried at Stone Street. A pdf version of the program notes can be seen on the website.
