April 2017 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he or she cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). What the Apostle John speaks about on the Lord s behalf in John chapter 3 is the necessity of the new birth. Jesus was to meet Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. Here, Jesus was teaching a teacher of the law. Nicodemus was willing to listen and learn now that he had apparently witnessed, as had all Jerusalem, the signs that Jesus showed them: that he was from God. Nicodemus wanted to find out what Jesus was all about. It was not a second physical birth, but a spiritual birth, when we are renewed and transformed by the power of God through the Holy Spirit. It is when we turn our lives around, yielding our will to the Lord; repenting, and letting the Holy Spirit guide us every day. As the Anglican Church has described it, baptism, done in a public way at a Christian worship service, is an outward and visible sign, of an inward and spiritual grace. I speak here of the inward and spiritual renewal. We get a new life; we are changed people! It is a new beginning, where our sins are forgiven, we are saved by God s grace, and our response is to love and praise God and love others. As Ephesians 2:8-9 says, For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God not the result of works, so that no one may boast. Jesus calls Nicodemus to reach beyond his limited knowledge to understand God s gift of eternal life in the Spirit. Nicodemus was called to understand that it is not enough to be only a good person or to be a good Jew, but be born again from above. The same is true for you and me. Understand that there is nothing more important in this life than to believe in Jesus and to live out this spiritual rebirth within ourselves, as it is God s path to eternal life. With God s gift of grace, all this is possible! By grace we have been saved through faith! Live it and tell others about it! Thanks be to God! Happy Easter! Pastor Dan 2

April Special dates: Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017 Holy Week, April 10-15 Maundy/Holy Thursday, April 13 Good Friday, April 14 Holy Saturday, April 15 Easter Sunday, April 16 World Malaria Day, April 25 Native American Ministries Sunday, April 30 Church-wide special Sundays: Have you ever wondered about those special envelopes you find in your bulletin several Sundays each year? They are for the Special Sundays. From the Book of Discipline: the special Sundays are intended to illustrate the nature and calling of The Church, celebrated annually. They are placed on the calendar to make clear the calling of The Church as the people of God and to give persons the opportunity to contribute offerings to special programs. There are 6 Church-wide special Sundays with specific celebration dates each year. Here is some information about the next two that are coming up. In April we celebrate Native American Ministries Sunday on April 30th. It is always celebrated the 3rd Sunday of Easter. This special Sunday helps nurture mission with Native Americans and provides scholarships for Native Americans attending United Methodist seminaries. Peace with Justice Sunday is always celebrated the first Sunday after Pentecost. This year it will be on June 11. This day supports peace with justice ministries through the General Board of Church and Society and the annual conferences, enabling The Church to have a voice in advocating for peace and justice. There are also Special Sundays without offerings such as: Heritage Sunday, always on the third Sunday of May. It is a day for congregations to reflect on its heritage, celebrate where the Church has been, how it views itself today, and the meaning of Christian conferencing. So when you see those envelopes in your Bulletin, please consider Giving to these Special Sundays! All Ladies and Young Ladies of the Church are cordially invited to a tea hosted by the Care Ministry team. Bring a Friend! There's nothing as sweet as time shared with friends. Saturday, May 13th Spring Tea 2 to 4 o'clock PM United Methodist Church of North Chili $ 4 per person Come join us for a relaxing afternoon Tea, delicious sandwiches and cookies, and other wonderful delights will be shared.
