Queen Bee Oregon s Winters Create a Challenge for Beekeepers. Two men walk down a street in Northeast Portland. In their hands they hold white jumpsuits, mosquito netting and a wooden box filled with metal tools. Glen Andresen and Tim Wessels, urban beekeepers and founders of Bridgetown Bees, are on a mission to breed a regional specific queen bee for the Portland area that will over-winter, or survive the winter. Qeen bees from much warmer areas like California or Hawaii do not over-winter very well in Oregon. After years of losing colonies, Andresen and Wessels partnered in 2013 to create a solution. Tim and I were tired of losing bees over the winter and having to replace them. We started to see if we could breed and raise bees that over-winter better, says Andresen. With this came the start of Bridgetown Bees. Andresen and Wessels take a queen s larva from a queen that survived the winter and try to get a colony of bees to take on this stronger queen bee That s our only criteria, says Andresen. Page no. Page 2
If a colony over-wintered, then we will use that stock. In addition, Andresen and Wessel do not treat their bees with any types of chemicals. I tried one of these harsher chemicals once, and I just decided I wouldn t use them because I wouldn t use them on my garden, so why would I use them on my bees, says Andresen. In fact, according to Andresen s records, his bees were dying at the same rate whether or not he was treating them with chemicals. And Andresen and Wessels do not even use smoke to calm the bees. We ll probably know more next year. If 60 percent of our Bridgetown bee queens survive and only 40 percent of the other queens survive, then we ll know we are heading in the right direction, says Andresen. Cover: I chose a photo that could illustrate the story well and be divided into thirds. The third above the two beekeepers is white and creates wonderful contrast for the blue gateway title. The bottom third is darker and allows for a lighter text for headline one and headline two. The contrast between light and dark colors and large and medium size font creates balance. The reader s eye easily follows a Z read formation across the cover between the elements of the title, photo subjects, barcode and lower headlines. Layout: I carried the emphasis of thirds into the layout. The first page is divided into three sections between the article title and byline, the body copy, and the large detail photo in the lower half of the page. I wanted to keep this page simple and utilize thirds and white space. There is considerable white space around the title including the space created by the color bar. The dark color bar mimics the dark blue in the photo below and balances the two color sections of the page. I included small amounts copy in two columns so as to not overwhelm the reader. A drop letter in yellow is used throughout the article to create unity with the title and tie in with all the photos selected. I created a Z read across the first two pages with the use of the dark title on page one and an anchor photo on the upper right-hand corner of page two and the lower full bleed photo on page one and a pull quote with yellow bars on page two. The copy is divided into three columns after the first page to carry the emphasis of thirds. The page numbers are on faded color boxes. Yellow boxes are used twice when the page number is near text and white boxes are used twice when the page number falls on a full bleed photo. Captions are in a contrasting blue font with some white space surrounding. Page four and five are very balanced with a large full bleed photo on the upper left-hand corner and one on the lower right-hand corner. I wanted to encourage the reader to turn the page and finish the story so I placed more weight on the right-hand side with a smaller image on top of the large one. To balance out the extra photo and blue color I placed the photo captions on the inside of the left-hand page.
