4 On October 3, 2018, with the Holy Mass celebrated on St. Peter's Square in Vatican, Pope Francis opened the Synod of Bishops devoted to youth, calling for the elimination of the barriers separating the Church from young people. As we reported, in the work of the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Head of the UGCC, and Bishop Brian (Baida), the Eparch of Saskatoon (Canada), were elected as delegates from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In total, 267 hierarchs will take part in the Synod, and 34 representatives from the youth aged 18 to 29 years old, will be among listeners. For the first time, two Bishops from the PRC came to the Synod. Their participation was made possible after the signing of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China. Launching a sermon during the Holy Mass on the occasion of opening the Synod of Bishops on "Youth, Faith and Recognition of Calling" that will continue in the Vatican until October 28, Pope Francis called upon the Holy Spirit, at this "moment of grace" which is the Synod, to restore in memory and to revive the words of the Lord, "again reawakening" enthusiasm and admiration for Jesus. We know that our youth are able to prophesy and have a vision depending on how we, now adults or elderly people, are able to dream and thus influence and share the dreams and hopes that we bear in our hearts. This is reported by the information portal www.vaticannews.va. The Holy Father prayed to the Holy Spirit not to allow the Synod Fathers to be suppressed by the "prophets of misery and misfortune" or their own "limitations of errors and sins," but that they were able to "find the space that illuminates the heart and to distinguish the paths of the Holy Spirit." The Pope warmly welcomed two Bishops of the People's Republic of China who take part in the Synod for the first time, because " through their presence, the unity of the whole episcopate with the Successor of St. Peter is even more obvious." His Holiness expressed hope that this "new church assembly "will be able to expand the horizons, to open up the hearts and to refine the structures that are now separating and removing us from the youth."

Pope Francis appealed to the Synodal Fathers to "listen to one another, in order to make a distinction between what the Lord hopes from his Church," which requires careful consideration and not to prioritize what is secondary and secondary to what is important. According to the Holy Father, "we need to listen to the Lord, in order to hear the call of God's people to Him." "With enthusiasm, let us build a world that is better than the present one," said the Pope. The Holy Father completed his sermon with the words: "Synodal Fathers, the Church looks at you with trust and love." Bishop Brian (Baida) said on his Facebook page that after the Mass, congratulating the Pope Francis, His Beatitude Sviatoslav said: "Ukraine prays for you, Holy Father!" And the Pope replied: "I pray for Ukraine!" Department of Information of the UGCC Pope Francis Asks Catholics Around the World to Pray Daily This October Pope Francis has made an surprising prayer request that all the Faithful of the Church would pray daily the Holy Rosary and two other prayers for the entire month of October. The month of October has traditionally been designated as the "Month of the Holy Rosary" and many Catholics do make a special effort to pray the Rosary daily themselves or especially with family or friends. However, the Holy Father has asked that two other prayers be added as well. The two prayers are: the prayer to the Archangel Michael that was composed by Pope Francis' predecessor Pope Leo XIII in 1886. (It was suppressed in 1964, but now Pope Francis is asking that the Faithful begin praying it again); the second is a prayer well known to Ukrainian Catholics To the Shelter of your mercy (Pid tvoju mylist') which most have prayed since childhood. http://archeparchy.ca/news_details.php?news_id=684 5

KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS In last weeks bulletin we mentioned several items, that made up the donation of the Knights to the maintenance of the Parish house. The donations over the past 25 years to the Parish is $81,510.00, the major items that were supported by the Knights were purchase of the round tables used in the hall, support of the elevator air conditioning, stained windows, furnace replacement, parking lot, dough roller/ mixer/cutter, mass books, sidewalk, general expenses etc. Thus it is quite obvious that this small band of men called The Saint Basil Knights, have and are having a huge impact on the life of the parish. However as was obvious at the last perogy supper, when several Brother Knights were away sick, or for other reasons, without the help of Nellie Fediuk and Linda Labay who did a fantastic job of serving the perogies and acting as runners. we would have had a difficult time serving the 245 customers, Ladies Thank You, you saved the day, This unless we start getting some new members is a sign of things to come, as our council is aging, where absenteeism due to health will become more prevalent. To join this illustrious group and help us to work as a Parish Family, contact any member of the Knights. To maintain our ability to serve our parish, is why the Knights need the support from our parishioners, in the various events put on by the Knights, Sunday October 14 th, Pancake Breakfast, Fall Harvest Dance on October 20 th, Coffee House after Liturgy starting Sunday October 21 st,we need and require the support of our parishioners if we are to continue working as a Family in Christ in our parish. Submitted by Grand Knight John Bazarkewich Thank you to everyone that came out to help on Wed. for the Perogy bee. We made 728 dozen perogies. Also thank you to the people that do the shopping for the Perogy supplies, peeling the potatoes, cooking and mashing the potatoes and grating the cheese for the potatoes. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks again. Our next Perogy Bee is Wed. Oct. 24th, 9:00 am. If you are able, please come out to help. The Perogy Crew 8
