MEDITATION ORDER OF MORNING WORSHIP October 4, 2015 Biblical worship is always a response to God s gracious revelation of Himself to His people, hence, all our worship services begin with a scriptural Call to Worship (that is, the content of the call comes from God s own Word quoted by the leader and the congregation). In this call we are reminded that God always takes the initiative. He always comes toward His people first, in grace. Our worship is a reflexive and deliberate response to His gracious call. We are promised that when we worship Him correctly, He is glorified and the dislocations of our lives are healed. The Apostles Creed is a concise summary of biblical teaching, dating in its earliest form to the 2nd century, and originally used as a baptismal confession. The holy catholic church means the true, universal church of all times and places. Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. -Micah 7:18-19 GREETING and ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL to WORSHIP HYMN PRAYER of INVOCATION APOSTLE S CREED (on screen) I believe in GOD the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. #167 When Morning Gilds the Skies I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary, He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried: He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

NOTES Lord s Day October 4, 2015 Walking On Water Matthew 14:22-33 To most people, Jesus walking on water is His defining miracle. If they can t name another single miracle, they can identify this one. Yet we so easily forget that Peter walked on water, too, not very far, but he got out of the boat and took a few steps sinking only when he focused on the wind and the waves instead of focusing on Jesus. I. Jesus Call to Trouble Matthew 14:22-24 A. Some people come to Christ in order to have a trouble-free life 1. Jesus died so that we might know the greatness of His loving heart 2. He calls us into the storm in order to experience His grace Matthew 14:22 B. Jesus promises to be with us in trouble Matthew 14:23-24 1. Fear not Isaiah 43:1-3 2. They will not fail because Jesus is interceding Romans 8:34 3. Consider Peter Luke 22:31-34 II. Jesus Presence in Trouble Matthew 14:25-27 A. Fear magnified 1. The disciples were fearful after rowing for nearly six hours and going nowhere 2. They were even more afraid of seeing a person walking on the water B. The I am is present 1. I am is the name for the self-existent God Exodus 6:2 2. Jesus presence comforts us Psalm 23:4 III. Jesus Invitation Matthew 14:28-33 A. If it is You Lord, command me to come to You. 1. Jesus invited Peter to come Matthew 14:29 2. Peter came down from the boat and he walked on the water to go to Jesus 3. Jesus has promised us we will do greater works than He has done John 14:12-18 4. Peter preached and 3,000 believed Acts 2:38-41 B. Lord, save me! Matthew 14:30 1. The cry of faith - helplessness 2. Jesus rescued Peter Matthew 14:31 3. Rebuke - O you of little faith, why did you doubt? 4. Immediately they were in the boat and the wind ceased Matthew 14:32; Psalm 65:5-8 The result is worship Matthew 14:33 Lord, give us the courage to do the impossible by Your good hand. Help us to know we are not abandoned but Jesus is interceding for us. Amen
Prayers for Those Not Communing Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who You are. Give me an understanding of You that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that You promise. Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through You I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that You have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive You as Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in You the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in baptism and a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen.
