February 17, 2019 Sixth day in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Reflection on Readings JER 17: 5-8; PS 1:1-4,6; 1 COR 15:12, 16-20; LK 6: 17, 20-26 Today s readings speak of an essential quality for the Christian steward hope. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ s promises and relying not on our own strength but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1817). In many ways this is the very definition of a stewardship way of life focusing on eternity as we live our daily lives and relying on God to provide for our needs and satisfy our deepest longings for meaning and happiness right now. In today s Gospel from Luke, Jesus describes the true richness of life that is possible for those of us who are willing to live as his hope-filled disciples. We are all familiar with this passage in which Jesus reveals the Beatitudes: blessed are the poor; they have the kingdom of God. Blessed are those now hungry because they will be satisfied. Blessed are those who weep because they will laugh. Blessed are those who are hated, excluded and insulted because they are disciples of Jesus; they will be greatly rewarded in heaven. Jesus is describing here the character of one who is living a life of hope the life of a Christian steward whose trust is firmly rooted in God and who is focused on others and eternity. It is not always an easy life, but it is a deeply meaningful life and one that leads to eternal reward. MARIAN HOUSE VOLUNTEER We are looking for an individual to lead the monthly Marian House volunteer effort for St. Gabriel. This is great opportunity to get involved in our parish as well as the local community, serving those in need of a nutritious, warm meal. The position involves sending out a monthly bulletin announcement requesting volunteers, passing along the names to the staff at the Marian House and of course, volunteering your time when possible. If interested, please contact Cyndy Pylkka at 719-964-6575 or ccsp@comcast.net. FLU SEASON For the health and safety of our community during this flu season, Fr. Kirk has decided to refrain from distributing the Precious Blood to the assembly. We will resume after the worst of the flu season. Also, during Sign of Peace, please respect those who do not wish to shake hands. Please offer a slight head bow. A hand sanitizer station has been set up in the Narthex. GABRIEL S GIFTS FOOD PANTRY COLLECTION IS FEBRUARY 23 AND 24 Our monthly Gabriel s Gifts food pantry collection for Mercy s Gate is next weekend. Please pick up a bin after mass today and bring your donation when you come to mass next weekend. Requested food items include canned fruit, hot and cold cereal, and boxed baking items. Non-food items include toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, and toilet paper. Thank you for supporting our community food pantry! ST. MARY S RAFFLE Raffle Tickets Win $10,000! St. Mary s High School will be selling raffle tickets after Masses on February 23 and 24 th in support of the school s Tuition Assistance Program. Tickets are $10 each for a chance to win $10,000, $4,000, and $1,000. Winning tickets will be drawn April 27 th during St. Mary s Annual Gala (need not be present to win). Students will have information about the Gala if you would like to join us for an evening that is Out of This World as we celebrate 50 years since the first landing on the moon with our Live and Silent Auction! For more information or to purchase Gala/additional raffle tickets, please call St. Mary's at 719-635-7540 or visit www.smhscs.org. HELP WANTED Volunteers are needed to assist with care of the linens used during Mass. This includes pretreating, washing, and ironing the linens. Laundry products are provided. Training will be provided as well as detailed written instructions. Scheduling is in increments of 1 week at a time with no minimum number of times per year required. Please contact Beth Kaplan for further information on this volunteer opportunity at 719-459- 9878 orkaplan_5674@msn.com. SCAM ALERT It has come to our attention that there are several email and mail scams going around to our church community. Recently several parishioners have received an email from Fr. Kirk requesting assistance in some way (either by money, I Tunes cards etc). These are scams and we are urging you to delete the email immediately and do not respond to it or open any links in the message. Please be aware that Fr. Kirk will NEVER contact you via email asking for assistance. If you should receive an email from any staff member of St. Gabriel, please make sure to check the ENTIRE email address. We will ALWAYS use the saintgabriel.net email address and it will have our church logo at the end of the message. An additional way to determine if the email is from Fr. Kirk is that he will sign +JMJ+ after his name. Checking email addresses and NOT responding to pleas is a good practice to exercise when reading emails from any source. If you should have any questions, please call the office at 719-528-8407. ADORATION OF OUR LORD Jesus loves us so much that He Chose to remain with us in His glorified human body veiled in the Holy Eucharist. How do we repay this love? By simply visiting Him. For more information contact: Kathy Thomas at 528-8407 or kthomas@saintgabriel.net. St. Gabriel the Archangel 2 Colorado Springs, CO

As good stewards, firmly grounded in that hope, may we bear fruit in due season - assisting the poor, feeding the hungry, and consoling the sorrowful whenever we have the chance. 2019 RETURNING GODS GIFTS UPDATE 2019 Parish Goal: $119,764 CATHOLIC CHARITIES ORIENTATION Come learn more about the ministries of Catholic Charities on February 22, 2019 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. starting at the Helen Hunt Campus at 917 E. Moreno Avenue and ending at the Marian House Campus. Lunch will be provided. For more information, and to R.S.V.P. call Corey at 719-866-6510. All are welcome! CANDLES Did you know that candles are lit for prayer intentions? To "light a candle for someone" indicates one's intention to say a prayer for another person, and the candle symbolizes that prayer. Pray for a special intention and ask for blessings for that person. In the lighting of candles, we remember and truly live the words of Our Lord: "I am the Light of the World." In the lighting of candles, we not only pray, but our prayers become smaller symbols of the One Light of Christ. In burning candles, our prayers rise to Heaven day and night. Prayers for the saint's intercessions are also common because of their friendship with God in Heaven. Saints are powerful intercessors. So make it a practice to light a candle for your loved ones often. INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY Snow season is here! For office hours and possible Confession and Mass cancellation, please call 528-8407, for recorded information which will be updated by 9am. For specific ministry event cancellations, look for information from the ministry coordinator. Please be safe during these winter months. St. Gabriel the Archangel 3 Colorado Springs, CO

And the chalice, or rather its content, how is it His Blood? These elements are called Sacraments, because in them one thing is perceived by the sense and another thing by the mind. What is seen has a bodily appearance; what the mind perceives produces spiritual fruit. You hear the words, The Body of Christ, and you answer Amen. THE CHAIR OF ST. PETER THE APOSTLE On February 22nd, we celebrate the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the apostle. The Lord said to Peter, You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church Matthew 16:18, and Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven Matthew 16:19. St. Peter s life is so important to the Church that he has more than one feast day during the year. The chair of St. Peter is a symbol of authority, as Jesus refers to this in Matthew 23: 2, when he commands and warns the crowd and his disciples, The Scribes and Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. The chair is metaphorically referring to the teaching and judging office that Moses held in the Name of God. The name that Jesus gives to Peter is a second metaphor for an office of teaching and judging, and to drive the point home, Jesus uses a third metaphor by speaking of the Keys of the kingdom of Heaven Mathew 16:19. The power of the keys is used in many ways; some are specific to the Office of St. Peter the Papacy, others are shared with those ordained to priestly ministry, the Sacrament of Confession. During this season of Lent, we pray for these human leaders of the Church chosen by God, so they are faithful ministers of God s grace to us. This feast day is an anniversary and celebration of the authority of the Papacy, and the particular mission entrusted to St. Peter by Jesus. The Roman Missal explains, the symbol of the chair, and emphasizes the mission of teacher and pastor of Christ conferred upon Peter, to whom He formed in His person and in St. Peter s successors, a visible foundation of unity of the Church. The chair, literally is a fixed seat of the supreme Pontiff and the Bishops, permanently placed in the Mother Church of the Diocese Cathedral, and is the symbol of the Bishop and his ordinary magisterium in the local church. The Chair of St. Peter indicates his position in the Apostolic College, established by the express will of Jesus, who assigned the task of feeding the flock, to lead the People of god, the Church.
