Zion s Outpost Branch Newsletter 2013 Branch Yearly Theme: The Ye May Be Lifted Up at the Last Day Theme: Be Led by the Holy Spirit Vol. 28 No. 7 The Church of Jesus Christ July, 2013 2013 Study Scripture Calendar: scripture reading and theme calendar prepared by Seventy Gary Whiting Theme: Be Led by the Holy Spirit WEEKLY READINGS: Week 1; John 14:16-27 Week 2; Romans 8:7-16 Week 3; Galatians 5:13-26 Week 4; Moroni 6:1-9 Week 5; Matthew 25:1-12, Doctrine & Covenants 45:10 The following is a quote from the scripture calendar: The promise of salvation through Jesus Christ and our hope for eternal life is reinforced by the gift of the Holy Ghost. Jesus told the disciples (John 14:13-16) to pray to the Father in His name. Jesus said if we keep His commandments He would pray to the Father to send the Holy Spirit to abide with us. The Spirit serves many roles for us in the gospel covenant. He is the earnest of our inheritance in Christ. His presence is God s witness or pledge that He will keep His promise to bring us into the kingdom and to a place of rest at the last day. The Spirit of God is also a Comforter to us. He communicates the love of God and assures us the we belong to God. The Comforter also reminds us of God s promises to us and encourages us to believe in the word of God. The Spirit of God is also a teacher as He opens the word of God to our understanding and applies the word to our life and times. The Spirit of God also bears witness of the Father and the Son to us, teaching us about who they are, what they are doing and of their love to us. Latter day revelation admonishes us to pray for the Spirit to be with us (D&C 42:5). In fact, the scripture seems to say that if we do not pray, the Spirit will not be with us. Prayer also establishes a familiarity with the Spirit so that we know His voice and we can more closely follow His guidance to us. Paul advises us to walk and live in the Spirit of God. We are warned in scripture that a person may blaspheme or sin against the Holy Ghost. This is an unforgivable transgression. Lesser offenses include striving against or grieving the Holy Spirit. If we pray for the Spirit to be with us, the chances of committing these offenses are greatly reduced or eliminated. Christian discipleship requires the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We can never be citizens of the kingdom of God without the transformational work of the Spirit of God in us. Read the FAMILY DEVOTION in this newsletter for more about this month s theme. F.Y.I. Burford & Loyd Wedding: On June 1 Claire Elizabeth Burford & Joshua Shawn Loyd were joined in holy matrimony while about 350 family & friends witnessed the ceremony service. Branch Work Day: On June 8, 10 hard workers gave their time & service; the project for the day was to insulate the walls of the garage and hang sheet-rock. On Thursday prior, Pam & Dwight B. and Dave & Debbie N. cleaned everything out [except the boxes containing the concordance books] and sorted through the items that were in the garage. Many unneeded items were donated to the AMVETS, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and His Helping Hands. Then on Friday, Dave N. ran All of this & more was in the garage (F.Y.I. continued on page 3)

Because of the all this preparation that was made and thanks to the great help on Saturday, all of the walls of the garage were insulated and the sheet-rock was done. Saturday s workers included: Anna, Naomi, Brent, Ian & Dwight Burford, Lance Springfield, Martha Van Nordstrand, Gary Whiting, Dave & Debbie Newman. On the following Monday storage shelve unites were assembled and filled with items to store in the garage. To complete the garage project, the remaining job ye to be done is to purchase wall hooks/hangers for the yard tools. As you can see from the picture, the garage reflects a people that desire to care for the tools and items God has so generously entrusted to us. A big THANK YOU to all who participated in this project! [more pictures of the work day on page 5] Summer Camps: June 9-15 six of the Burford family members attended camps. Dwight, Pam, Anna and Naomi went to the South Chrysler Reunion at Graceland University in Lamoni, IA while Jacob and Joel attended the Sr. High Youth Camp at Odessa, MO. All enjoyed the fellowship of their brothers and sisters in Christ. Dave & Debbie Newman will attend the Seventy Missionary Family Reunion, also at Graceland, the week of June 23-29. Be sure and talk to the camp and reunion attendees to hear their personal testimony of camp experience. Various camps and reunions are available during the summer throughout the US. A list of them may be found in the Jan/Feb Restoration Voice #207 magazine and the April issue of the Beacon magazine as well as on the bulletin board at church. Please support the camps and reunions with your prayers. Baby Bottle Boomerang Fundraiser: In support of Kansas for Life, on Mother s Day baby bottles were available to fill with coins, bills or checks. After the donations were collected the bottles were returned to the church on Father s Day. The money will be used by Kansas for Life for education and defending the mothers and the unborn and providing for their needs, for safety, protection and for necessary items. There were 9 bottles returned from Zion s Outpost in support of the Blessing from Above Baby Bottle Boomerang fundraiser. If you have not returned a baby bottle yet, please let Jeff Drope know and he can arrange for it s delivery. Thank you to all who supported the young babies, moms & the unborn. Your generous donation will make a difference for many. Special Guest on June 30th: The Sperry family will be here on Sunday the 30th, arriving in the early evening, to bring ministry and fellowship. The fellowship will begin about 6pm. Following the service a soup dinner will be provided for everyone so there will be time to visit and fellowship with Chuck, Regina, Timothy, Tekva, Hannah and Joshua. The Sperry family's home is in Honduras and this is a rare opportunity that they are all in the USA at the same time. However two of the family members, Charles & Elizabeth, will not be with the family as they are attending the Christian College of the Ozarks in Hollister, MO. They have jobs there that prevent them from coming. We hope you will make an effort to attend on June 30. Please RSVP to Debbie N. so there will be enough food for all. Vacation Detective School: Put your thinking hat on and come to the church July 29 armed with a critical eye, ready to examine the facts surrounding the... The story LED BY THE SPIRIT is from the April 2013 Daily Manna devotion booklet by Louis Clark Gregson. Sing Hymn: #361 He leadeth me, oh, blessed thought Prayer: Story: April 7 LED BY THE SPIRIT Alma 13:31-39 Matthew 4:1 After his miraculous delivery from prison, Aaron took his departure and was led by the Spirit to the Land of Nephi, even to the house of the king. He ruled over all the land, except the Land of Ishmael; and he was the father of King Lamoni. Aaron, with his brethren went to the king s palace and Aaron politely bowed before the great ruler and said,...we are the brethren of Ammon who thou has delivered out of prison;, O King,...spare our lives; we will be thy servants. The king said, Arise, for I will grant unto you your lives and I will not suffer that ye shall be my servants, but I will insist that ye shall administer unto me; for I have been somewhat troubled in mind because of the generosity and the greatness of the words of thy brother Ammon; and, I desire to know the cause why he has not come up out of Middoni with thee? Aaron said, Behold, the Spirit of the Lord hath called him another way; he hath gone to the Land of Ishmael to teach the people of Lamoni. The king asked them, What is this that ye have said concerning the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, this is the thing which doth trouble me; and also, what is this that Ammon said, If ye will repent, ye shall be saved, and if ye will not repent, ye shall be cast off at the last day? Aaron said, Believest thou that there is a God? The king replied, I know that the Amalekites say that there is a God, and I have granted...that they should build sanctuaries...to worship him.
