Do Not Fall Away John 16:1-15 1 I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, Where are you going? 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Recap Last Week We remembered the purpose for the book And it was written so people may come to know Jesus is the Christ the Son of God And that through believing they would have eternal life through Him We were reminded that He is having this conversation with His 11 disciples Starting at the end of ch 13 Judas has left to betray Him And Jesus is giving some last instructions to His faithful disciples To the ones who are about to carry out His mission And Judas is currently negotiating how much he needs to betray Jesus with a kiss And beginning in ch 15 Jesus tells them that He is the vine and they are the branches And He is telling them that they must remain and abide in Him And they must bear fruit. He tells them that all the branches that do not bear fruit And that fruit is a godly life while testifying to others about the gospel If a branch bears no fruit then it is thrown out into the fire And this is significant because He starts out what we are looking at today with: I say all these things to you to keep you from falling away We also saw three things in the text last week: Hatred, guilt and Witness We saw that the world was going to hate the disciples just like they hated Jesus We saw they would be guilty because He had told them the truth and done many signs We saw that through the help of the Holy Spirit, Jesus followers would bear witness To this Hateful and Guilty World That they were once a part of So we are caught up with where we are today So, that is a bit of a recap Intro So, for an intro, lets go back even a little further to remind ourselves about today And what is coming very soon for Jesus

Today, for us is Palm Sunday It is the Sunday before the resurrection of Jesus So it is also the Sunday before His improper imprisonment Unfair trail Cruel beatings and punishment And His Sin Bearing Death by crucifixion on the cross All the Way back in Chapter 12 we see Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey s colt And this was prophesied hundreds of years before it happened Even the singing of the people was prophecied And people were singing out to Jesus Because they had heard of His miracles and His rasing Lazarus from the dead John 12:12-13 12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! So, this is where they want to anoint Jesus as King So, that was on the Sunday before Jesus is Crucified... So next week is Easter... So it was Like happening today... And Sunday for them was the first day of the week... because their Sabbath was on Saturday Now we are only Hours away from Judas Betraying Jesus... You will see... we will finish ch 16 and then 17 is His high priestly prayer for His disciples At the end of the prayer and beginning of Ch 18 they go across the Kidron Valley And to a garden to pray And Judas comes to betray Him So that is where we are toward the end of the week Today Jesus is continuing His instructions to His Disciples And I am going to focus on just a few things in this text. And I want to Reread the Text if you do not mind. Because there is a lot in there, and it takes many times of reading the text to understand John 16:1-15 1 I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. So Today We will See: 1) Jesus Words Keep Us 2) Expect Trials

3) The Holy Spirit is Our Helper 4) The Holy Spirit Comes to Convict 5) The Holy Spirit Will Glorify Jesus Through You 2) Expect Trials 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. We Spent A Good Bit of time on this last week So Will just touch on it briefly He is Warning them Ahead of time about what is coming He had just told them how they would be hated because the world hated Him And now He is being more specific Jesus Tells them They will be put out of the synagogues And they were And if you remember back in ch12 I think There were leaders that believed on Him, but were afraid of this very thing So they did not profess Jesus Because the loved the glory of man more than the glory of God He tells them they will be killed And to make matter worse these people will think they are working for God Jesus then Says I am telling you these things for a reason So when it happens.. You will be ready You will remember what I said I am going to the Father And your hearts are filled with Sorrow over this But I am letting you know ahead of time that this will be happening. 1) Jesus Words Keep Us 1 I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. Said All these Things: Jesus has taken a lot of time to tell them what to expect while He is gone And He is saying these things with a purpose. To Keep You From Falling Away He does not want them to be discouraged and run from the faith He does not want to tell them how great their life is going to be on this earth Then He leaves and it turns out terrible for them Meditate on this for one minute please. This flies in the face of what many are told today They say if you come to Jesus this is gonna get better and this will And your health will return And your finances will get better And people will like you. Think about the complexity of this:

Jesus tells them ahead of time what is about to happen And they still follow Him Don t you think it would be hard to follow someone when they tell you it wont be easy The reason they were able to follow Him is because they knew Him The disciples knew who Jesus was They understood that the temporary pleasures of this world Were nothing compared to the eternal glory waiting for those who come to God If You only live for today you will be disappointed in the next life As believers We live with a Hope. A Hope of a life with the God of all the universe So, Jesus prepares His followers. And says I am saying these things so you will not fall away Fall Away. Go away from the faith It is through His words that we are kept in His hands today There are warnings throughout the Bible of the possibility of those in the church falling away Over and over again we see it. We would be unwise to not heed the warnings given to us by Jesus, and Paul and Peter, and the author of Hebrews, and John To be careful and not fall away Although it is true that all true children of God Will persevere until the end You better not live your life haphazardly saying Once saved always saved I am good to go Doesn t matter what I do or what I say I am in His hands I am preserved by God He will not lose any of those that are His I am of the elect In the end you may find yourself sorely disappointed Matthew 7:22-23 22 On that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name? 23 And then will I declare to them, I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness. Stay closely and consistently in His Word And You will remain in Him.. You will not fall away 3) The Holy Spirit is Our Helper 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. We have spent a lot of time here over the past month as well but lets look at it again briefly It is to our advantage If He does not go away the Helper will not come If He goes He will send Him to us. He is our Helper He has come to help us in all things All things Spiritual things, and Material Things He is the believers Helper. The Holy Spirit is God living within Us. What a privilege it is for a man to have God living in Him Isn t that amazing First Hand Report He is so gracious and Kind to Me. And firm and convicting Do You Know the Presence of the Holy Spirit in Your Life

Ask yourself this question Yes or No Then ask what does my answer mean? How do I respond to Him How do I rely on Him Do I ignore Him, DO I listen to Him Do I trust Him Do I allow Him to do bold and mighty things through me And the last point we will make today will be more specific with His role with us 4) The Holy Spirit Comes to Convict 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. Three things We See the Spirit coming to do for the world 1) Convict them Concerning Sin 2) Convict them Concerning Righteousness 3) Convict them Concerning Judgment Try to look at this from two vantage points. 1) From our own vantage point as the person once in the world We too were of the world and in it and bound for Hell And the Holy Spirit came and opened our eyes. 2) From the vantage point of the person who remains in the world Who hears the conviction of the Holy Spirit and ignores it or pushes it off This person who will not believe and hardens his heart toward God Who, in the end, will see the truth of it all when it is too late The Word convict means: To convince or reprove 1) Convict them Concerning Sin Because they do not believe in me He tells the world that they have sinned He shows them that they have purposely wronged God He shows them what sin is He shows them that it is grevious in the eyes of God And many of the world see this and repent And the Holy Spirit works through men to do this Through the preaching and testimony of His word And there are many that hear And they ignore and they reject Heaping more sin upon their sinful lives It is true that a person can not believe in Christ for salvation: Until He has been convicted of His sins that they are terrible and that He deserves Hell for them There is often great sorrow when coming to Christ At least initially because we see our faults before Him That sorrow is turned to gladness when those sins are removed 2) Convict them Concerning Righteousness Because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer He was accused of being a blasphemer He was accused of many wrongs But the Spirit will prove this untrue

The Spirit comes and convinces the world that Jesus Jesus is the righteous standard And that unless we are righteous like Him We will not see Heaven Jesus is the righteousness we must be clothed in Because He goes to the Father His resurrection proves the validity of His claims It proves Him to be right and the world wrong The Holy Spirit will convince the world that He is the Righteous one He will help them to see His true Nature 3) Convict them Concerning Judgment Because the ruler of this world is judged What Jesus did through the Cross was a judgment and fatal blow to Satan His death on the cross made it so condemnation could be taken away from men He death provided an escape from the certainty of death and hell Satan does not win He is judged He is proven to be guilty to be wrong The Holy Spirit Will convict the world of the truth of Satan s lies He will open their eyes to their future fate if they continue to follow the devil He will show them their fate is the same judgment as His if they follow Him It is mind blowing: When a person can see Oh Man! I have been following the devil Thought I was just doing my own thing Following my own desires But they were his I am following Him The Holy Spirit shows them they need a change. He leads them away from Satan and toward Jesus 5) The Holy Spirit Will Glorify Jesus Through You 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. Jesus says there are many things He has left to say but they can not bear them now I believe He is referring to what He will tell them after His resurrection And through the Holy Spirit There are things they will not be able to understand or bear But He spends a lot of time with them after He is resurrected After He is Resurrected the Holy Spirit takes over The Holy Spirit comes to guide them in all truth He will lead you to the truth If you will faithfully trust Him and listen to Him and seek Him through His word He will not speak on His own Authority He speaks what He hears In the same way Jesus did this He will glorify Jesus He will take what belongs to Jesus and give it to them

What is Jesus is the Fatihers What We see is a Unity within God Within the Godhead of the Father Son and Spirit They agree on everything and give to us the truth So you understand the role of the Holy Spirit in your life? If you do not, you really need to spend some time in the word Reading about His role in your life And praying to Him and the Father and the Son. Although they are the same God, they have distinct roles in your life Invitation: God has left us here with a task Let us complete it How are you doing at the task He has given you?
