Harold Wahl, Pastor (708) 269-4382 pastor@splcms.org DIVINE SERVICE Setting 1 Page 151 Lutheran Service Book Christians Live by Faith in Christ and Rejoice in the Promise of His Resurrection Cursed is the man who trusts in man, for all the strength of his flesh is like the grass that fades away (Jer. 17:5). The one who turns away from the Lord may have food and money and laugh for now, but he shall mourn and weep in the judgment (Luke 6:24 25). But the man who trusts in the LORD is blessed with all that he needs, like a tree planted by water. When heat comes, he survives (Jer. 17:7 8). For the Lord has come in the flesh to heal the people of all their diseases, to cleanse their spirits with forgiveness, and to preach the Gospel of the kingdom of God to the poor (Luke 6:18 20). As all of this is by way of His cross, it is solely by faith in the promise of His resurrection that Christians rejoice and leap for joy (Luke 6:21 23). If Christ has not been raised, our faith is in vain and we are most to be pitied (1 Cor. 15:14 19). But, in fact, just as Christ died for our sins, so has He also been raised from the dead (1 Cor. 15:3, 20). Ringing of the Bells Welcome Hymn of Invocation LSB 684, Come unto Me, ye weary

Invocation 2 Confession and Absolution The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. C Amen. Service of the Word The Introit Ps. 119:1 2, 4 5; antiphon: Ps. 119:7 (ESV) P I will praise you with an upright heart, C when I learn your just and righteous decrees. P Blessèd are those whose way is blameless, C who walk in the law of the LORD! P Blessèd are those who keep his testimonies, C who seek him with their whole heart. P You have commanded your precepts C to be kept diligently.

3 P Oh that my ways may be steadfast C in keeping your statutes! C Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now, and will be forever. Amen. P I will praise you with an upright heart, C when I learn your just and righteous decrees. Kyrie P In peace let us pray to the Lord. P For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

Hymn of Praise This Is the Feast 4 Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you. P Let us pray. P O Lord, graciously hear the prayers of Your people that we who justly suffer the consequence of our sin may be mercifully delivered by

5 Your goodness to the glory of Your name; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 17:5 8 (ESV) A The Old Testament Reading for The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany of Our Lord is from the 17 th chapter of The Prophecy of Jeremiah. 5 Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Epistle Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:12 20 (ESV) A The Epistle Reading is from the 15 th chapter of St. Paul s First epistle to the Corinthians. 12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is

6 true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia Verse The Holy Gospel: Luke 6:17 26 (ESV) P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 6 th chapter. 17 And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all. 20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! 23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your

7 consolation. 25 Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Hymn of the Day LSB 705, The man is ever blessed Sermon Text: Jeremiah 17:5 8 (ESV) Sermon Theme: Truly Blessed In The Lord! Hymn of Response LSB 739, Precious Lord, Take My Hand The Apostles Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 8 Prayer of the Church P As the prophet reminds us, blessed are those who trust in the Lord. So do we come this day with the concerns of our hearts and our prayers on behalf of all as they have need. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You have delivered Your people through the blood of Your Son and have given us the new birth into a hope and life death cannot overcome. Grant to Your Church honesty in our preaching and love in our service to those who have not yet heard the Gospel. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You have given us Your pledge and promise that we shall not be alone. Guard Your people against the threats of the enemy and the persecution of a world still against You. Deliver all pastors, teachers, missionaries, deaconesses and other church workers from all that would hinder their service to us on Your behalf, and bestow upon them Your Spirit and His gifts for their faithful work. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You hold in Your hand all the might of man and though we struggle against the enemies of Your will, You have promised to make all things work together for Your

purpose. Bless our nation and those who lead us our president, Congress, judges and magistrates and enlighten them with Your Word, so that they would work in accordance with Your will and for the common good. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. 9 P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You sent Your Son that we might have healing through His wounds. Be with the sick, the hospitalized, the aged, the infirm, the dying and the troubled in mind or heart Help them to know Your presence and Your peace in their afflictions, and grant them healing and relief as You will. Teach them contentment of heart, and keep them in faith to the day of Christ s coming. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are the blessed and chosen people of Your grace and favor. You have called us by Your Word and gathered us by Your Spirit before this altar. Grant to us repentance and faith, that we may receive this Sacrament for our benefit and so be transformed by this blessed communion and be made more Christ-like in faith and service. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, though now we weep in the face of death, we rejoice to know the power of Christ and His resurrection. In this hope, we commend to You all the faithful who have died in Your faith and fear. Bring us with those who have fallen asleep in Christ to that blessed day when the dead shall be raised, when sin shall no more accuse, when death shall no more grieve and when we will live in Your presence forevermore. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. Special Intercessory Prayers - from pink colored insert... P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P All these things, blessed Father, and those things You know we need, we pray You to grant us for the sake of and because of the merits of Jesus Christ alone, with whom You live and reign, the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

Preface P The Lord be with you. 10 Service of the Sacrament P Lift up your hearts. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus

11 Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess

12 Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: The Lord s Prayer C Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always. Agnus Dei Distribution of Christ s Body and Blood In the Sacrament of the Altar, we receive the real, genuine body and blood of Jesus Christ, which hung on the cross and flowed from his veins. Participation in The Sacrament is limited to those who are active members in good standing in a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod or who have spoken personally to the pastor.

13 Members of other Christian denominations who are present may come forward to receive a blessing from the Pastor during the distribution. It is requested that you cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you desire this blessing. Scripture teaches that those who receive the blood to their harm. If you are not fully repentant, we ask that you refrain from receiving the Sacrament and speak with the Pastor. P Gracious God, our heavenly Father, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of Your Son s body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our days of pilgrimage that, on the day of His coming, we may, together with all Your saints,

14 celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which has no end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. It can indeed make us weary when we do our work to proclaim life as valuable, and the world continues to abort babies and write prescriptions for people to commit suicide and minimize the value of life in so many ways.
