Page 2 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema and Music - 25 Indeed Subbiah Bagavathar and Ramudu Iyer became a theater box-office draw! The famed Tamil writer, journalist, arts critic, and literary giant, Kalki (Ra. Krishnamurthy) wrote about such boisterous bouts in his interesting and humor-drenched drama reviews in the popular weekly Ananda Vikatan. (Until 1940-1941, Kalki was the Associate Editor of the S. S. Vasan-owned weekly and wrote many features including his much-awaited fiction under several pen names. His music reviews, including those of gramophone records, dramas and films, appeared under the pseudonym, Karnaatakam. Such reviews were read with much interest by thousands of readers. Later a collection of them appeared in book form and proved a good seller. Such collections in Tamil were rare in those days.) An important film of 1933 was Nandanar produced by the legendary film company of yester-decades, New Theaters of Calcutta. One of the most famous names in the history of Indian Cinema, it produced many hits and classics in Bengali and Hindi. The company also produced a few films in Tamil during the 1930 s like Nalla Thangaal,(1935), Kovalan (1934), Devadas (1937), Poorna Chandra (1935), Bhaktha Prahalada (1933) Raja Bhoja (1935), and Nandanar (1933). The folk myth tale of the low-born farmhand Nandan and his unfathomable devotion and bhakthi for Lord Nataraja has been a familiar tale among Tamilians. It was written as a musical titled, Nandan Charitram by Gopalakrishna Bharathi, circa late 18th century. Bharathi s work was a great success and proved immensely popular in the form of Harikatha Kalashepam. Later it was made as a hit play and as a silent film in 1923 and 1930. When cinema began to talk and sing Tamil in 1931, the folk myth tale was made thrice in 1933, 1935 and 1942. The 1935 version made history with the famed stage and screen star, musician, and cult figure K. B. Sundarambal playing the male role of Nandan. The 1942 version was produced by the Indian movie mogul, S. S. Vasan for his Gemini Studios and the well known Classical Carnatic musician, champion of the Thamizh Isai Movement, and sometime movie star, M. M. Dhandapani Desikar played Nandan. The Gemini version was the most successful version of them all. Another forgotten pioneer filmmaker, P. V. Rao, directed the New Theaters version. The title role of the untouchable (Mahatma Gandhi called them Harijans, now known as Dalits ) and lowborn Shiva Bhaktha was enacted by S. V. Subbaiah Bhagavathar. When cinema began to talk Tamil, film producers made a beeline to theater and the Carnatic music world, and engaged artistes who could sing well and were reasonably handsome. As a top stage star known for his musical knowledge, singing and acting skills, Subbaiah Bhagavathar was an automatic choice. Thus P. V. Rao and New Theaters cast him as Nandan. Besides his fame and name as stage star, he was also popular for his best selling gramophone records, known to the common man and woman as plates. The most popular of them all was Jaya Jaya Gokula Bala, Indeed, to this day, this song is associated with his name like a signature tune! Subbaiah Bhagavathar recorded many songs - around forty - and some of his noted discs then known as plates were Kaayatha Kaanagathey, Entha Maanida Vedar, Nalvaakku Nee, Surali Mahimai, Saanthamuleka (two parts), Dharaniyil Anbu, Poongavana Kuyiley, Vaazhaiyadi Vaazhai, Nee Mathi Sallaga, Kaathalin Bhagyia, Karpil Sirandha, Chidambaram Pogaamal (from Nandanar ), Annamey, Maadhavar Kulam, Appaney Neeyey Gathi, Sringara Lahari, Sri Raghukula, Dinamani Vamsa, Sarasa and Rani Kalyani. Subbaiah Bhagavathar had been born into an orthodox Brahmin family and, even as a lad, he was drawn to music and drama. When his family vehemently objected to his interest in such riff raff arts he left home one night and joined a Boys Company as actor. (To be continued) REQUEST TO READERS! Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES August 11-17, 2012 Court directive on temple blocking school gate The Madras High Court directed the Chennai Corporation Commissioner and the executive engineer concerned on Aug. 2 to file affidavits stating as to why, despite several representations by Springfield Matriculation and Higher Secondary School 50th Street, Sector 9, K. K. Nagar) they had not stopped the construction of a temple with its wall blocking a gate of the institution. Passing interim orders on the school s petition, the First Bench of Chief Justice M. Y. Eqbal and Justice T. S. Sivagnanam directed the K. K. Nagar Police Inspector to file a separate affidavit as to why he had not taken any action to prevent the closing of the school gate and raising a temple there when there was a specific direction by the Supreme Court that no temple or any religious Diabetes, blood pressure camp Poornima Health Hospital (44/2, New Boag Road, T. In its petition, the school alleged that a few residents of 49th and 50th Streets had erected a small temple in the middle of the street in front of the school s western gate. The school had sent representations and reminders to the authorities for removing the construction. The Bench posted the case for further hearing on Aug. 6. In the meantime, the police should post sufficient number of personnel to prevent any further mischief that may be committed, the court said. (A Mambalam Times reporter who visited the spot found that those who had built the temple had constructed a wall along the compound wall of the school behind which the gate has been installed. See pictures top and middle. (Enquiries reveal that installation of the gate began two months ago and the compound wall was to have been demolished after work was completed and gate could be used. Meanwhile, a wall was built along the compound wall of the school and the temple was constructed. (Similarly, another gate has been installed behind the compound wall of the school on 50 th Street but the compound wall is yet to be demolished for access to the gate. Here also a temple has been constructed as seen in picture at bottom). The only one who deserves it is a guy called M. A. This guy M. Bali, later cheated by the crooks and banished to solitary confinement by the political grabbers, is released only on Onam Day to visit his home State. He never fails to call me on his Nokia to bewail all that he sees on his TV in Hades. At present, 2,390 differentlyabled children, attending primary training centers and nursery schools across the State, are availing of travel concession while commuting by Stateowned transport corporation buses. Hereafter, one companion of these children can also avail of this concession. Under the scheme, visually impaired persons are being given foldable walking canes painted in white and red. For this, the Chief Minister has ordered supply of reflective foldable canes to be provided to 5,000 visually impaired persons at an expenditure of Rs. 10 lakhs, an official release said. Besides, at present, a maintenance assistance of Rs. 1,000 per month is being provided to 77,112 mentally challenged persons who cannot take care of themselves on their own. Aimed at increasing the number of beneficiaries under the scheme, the percentage of disability eligible for getting this assistance will be reduced from 60% to 45%. To reduce dropouts, cash incentives are being given to those studying in Classes 10, 11 and 12. Jayalalithaa has ordered extension of this scheme to students of special schools run by the Differently Abled Welfare Department and Government-recognized special schools. For students of Classes 10 and 11, Rs. 1,500 will be given as incentive, while Class 12 students will get Rs. 2,000. This amount will be deposited in Tamil Nadu Power Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. For this scheme, the Chief Minister has sanctioned Rs. 22.34 lakhs. The scheme will benefit 1,359 students. State to fly out college students, teachers for studies abroad In a first, the Tamilnadu Government has introduced a study abroad program for postgraduate students and teachers of Government arts and science colleges. Meritorious candidates from under-privileged background will be selected and sent abroad for a whole semester. The announcement was made by Minister for Higher Education P. Palaniappan at a meeting organized by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) on Aug. 7. Colleges have been asked to make preparatory lists by the month-end and the project is likely to start next academic year. This will help students get Electricity consumers will be in for another shock after the increase in tariff some months ago, if the proposal for a hike in existing fees for new service connections and introduction of levies for a dozen services including replacement of damaged/burnt meters, all clubbed under miscellaneous charges, were to be approved. The proposal, mooted by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), envisages the manifold increase in the existing fees on different counts. The Corporation s petition (M.P No. 16 of 2012) is available on the website of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) (www.tnerc.gov.in). The miscellaneous charges are levied under two dozen heads. For example, in the case of new service connections, the proposed connection charges for domestic consumers having three phase supply with connected load up to 18.6 kilo watt (KW), are Rs. 1,600. If the connected load (CL) falls between 18.6 KW and 50 KW, the new charges will be Rs. 3,000 and for over 50 KW and 112 KW, Rs. 10,000. As of now, irrespective of connected load, the service connection charges are Rs. 500. In respect of a single phase connection, the proposed rate is Rs. 900 against the existing rate of Rs. 250. To cite another example, for changing a meter on the consumer s request without any dispute over the functioning of the instrument, the existing charges for all types of low tension consumers (single phase or three phase) are Rs. 50. This will go up to Rs. 250 in the event of approval of the TANGEDCO s proposal. For a three-phase domestic consumer, the proposed rates will be Rs. 500 (for CL up to 18.6 KW) and Rs. 1,600 (for CL between 18.6 KW and 50 KW). What will be of more relevance to power consumers is the introduction of levies for those services, for which there are no charges now. At present, for replacement of international exposure and understand different cultures, said Palaniappan. The move was initiated by TANSCHE and the British Council. In the first batch, 25 students and 5 teachers are likely to benefit. The 11 new arts and science colleges that were announced this year have begun the admission process, the minister said. Additionally, over 250 new courses will be initiated across colleges in the State. The minister called for establishing university-business collaboration centers to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The focus will be on training not just the educated but also the uneducated population in the state and empower them with employable skills, said Dr. T.S. Sridhar (Additional Chief Secretary, Higher Education). Vice-chancellors of about 10 universities across the State participated in the meeting. Among the issues discussed was the system of choice-based credit system and launching the national mission for teachers, as proposed by the Central government. There were also discussions on making the admission process transparent and introducing Tamil in all four semesters of undergraduate courses. We will meet frequently to come to a decision on the matter, the VC of a university said. Report courtesy The Hindu Power consumers may get another shock meters damaged or burnt by acts of consumers, no service charges are levied. Hereafter, Rs. 250 will be levied for a single phase domestic consumer; Rs. 500 for a three phase consumer below 18.6 KW connected load and Rs. 1,600 if the load is in the range from 18.6 KW to 50 KW. Besides, the actual cost of meters will be recovered. Likewise, for a host of functions such as meter reading and preparation of power bills, a rate of Rs. 10 per month will be charged on a domestic consumer; Rs. 100 per month for a service falling under LT current transformer (LTCT) category and Rs. 250 for high tension services such as an industrial establishment.
