If you have a prayer request or would like Pastor Schaefer to visit or call you, please note your request. Holy Communion will be celebrated today. Our guests are kindly asked to note that it is our practice to first become a member of our communion fellowship before communing with us. Please speak to our pastor about becoming a member of our communion fellowship. THE COMMON SERVICE (page 15) OPENING HYMN: #394 Blessed Are the Saints of God STAND M: In the name of the Father and of (+) the Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION OF SINS

M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY (Kyrie) M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. M: Let us pray. Lord God, in mercy receive the prayers of your people. Grant them the wisdom to know the things that please you and the grace and power always to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BE SEATED THE WORD FIRST LESSON: Jeremiah 17:5-8 Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come.

He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 1 - The choir will sing Roots in the Earth 1993, GIA Publications. Reprinted with permission under One License #A-722670 and recorded with permission under One License #101103. All rights reserved. Refrain: Roots in the earth, branches stretched to the skies, Those who hope in God are blessed and wise. Blessed is he who rejects bad advice, Who knows that integrity and justice have no price. Blessed is she who in good finds delight, The law her companion through the day and through the night. (Refrain) Just like a tree near a stream given root, Season to season richly yielding its fruit. See how they soar, how their leaves never fade, Strong are their branches and abundant is their shade. (Refrain) Not so for those who rejoice in their sin: Like chaff on the floor they shall be driven by the wind. God guards the road for the just, night and day, But death lays an ambush for the wicked on their way. (Refrain) SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20

12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. VERSE OF THE DAY (sung by the choir) Alleluia! Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia! (John 6:68) STAND After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: GOSPEL: Luke 6:17-26 17 And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.

20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! 23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life (+) of the world to come. Amen. BE SEATED GOSPEL RESPONSE: Jesus Sat with His Disciples

1 Jesus sat with his disciples On a mountainside one day; As the crowds of people gathered He began to teach and say: Blessed are the poor in spirit, Heaven s kingdom they will share. Blessed are the sad and mourning, Joy and comfort will be theirs. 2 Blessed are the meek and humble, All the earth to them is willed. Those who hunger to be holy, They are bless d and will be filled. Yes, the merciful are blessed, Mercy will to them be shown. And the pure in heart are blessed, They have eyes for God alone. 3 Blessed are God s sons and daughters, Making peace where there is strife. Blessed are the persecuted, Who for righteousness lose life; Their reward is great in heaven, In the kingdom up above So be glad to share my suff ring, And rejoice to know my love. Text: Stephen P. HYMN OF THE DAY: #283 Speak, O Savior; I Am Listening SERMON STAND PSALM 51 RESPONSE (page 20)

BE SEATED OFFERING STAND PRAYER OF THE CHURCH FOR THE SEASON OF EPIPHANY (page 124) M: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary s son, in the fullness of time you came into our world to save us from sin and death. C: You ushered in the day of grace so long foretold. M: Beloved Son of the Father, revered by the Magi, baptized by John, you came preaching and teaching, healing and comforting, forgiving and encouraging:

C: You brought the light of life to those walking in darkness, and the joy of salvation to those doomed to death. M: Prince of peace, shine like a beacon for us and the people of our world. Let the good news of salvation be heard in the remotest corners of the earth. Open our own lips to speak your name to those around us who still live without faith or hope: C: Arouse us and our missionaries to flood the world with the light of your gospel. M: Lord of the Church, let your peace rule our hearts that we may use our gifts to serve you and each other in willing gratitude and joy. Watch over our loved ones near and far, that they may remember your love and rejoice in your salvation. Strengthen the faith of the sick and the disheartened. Give hope to those in despair and comfort those who mourn: C: Be gracious to all and lead us to reflect your love in everything we say and do. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. M: Finally, bring us and all your believers to the heavenly home where we will stand in the full light of your glory and

with all your saints and angels sing the everlasting song of triumph. C: Amen. 1993 Northwestern Publishing House. Reprinted by permission. LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from (+) evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE SACRAMENT PREFACE M: The Lord be with you.

M: Lift up your hearts. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lived among us as a human being and revealed his glory as your only Son, full of grace and truth. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Sanctus)

WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my (+) body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is the new testament in my (+) blood, which is poured out for you for the

forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. M: The peace (+) of the Lord be with you always.
