THE COMMON SERVICE OPENING HYMN Blessed Jesus, at Your Word 221 (vs. 1-3) 1 Blessed Jesus, at your Word We are gathered all to hear you. Let our hearts and souls be stirred Now to seek and love and fear you, By your teachings, sweet and holy, Drawn from earth to love you solely. 2 All our knowledge, sense, and sight Lie in deepest darkness shrouded Till your Spirit breaks our night With the beams of truth unclouded. You alone to God can win us; You must work all good within us. 3 Gracious Savior, good and kind, Light from Light, from God proceeding, Open now our heart and mind; Help us by your Spirit s pleading. Hear the cry your people raises; Hear and bless our prayers and praises. STAND M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. 1

LORD, HAVE MERCY God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. PRAYER AND PRAISE In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. GLORY BE TO GOD 2

3

PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. Let us pray Lord God, in mercy receive the prayers of your people. Grant them the wisdom to know the things that please you and the grace and power always to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BE SEATED THE WORD FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 30:1-10 When all these things come upon you, both the blessing and the curse that I have given you, and you take them to heart while you are among all the nations to which the LORD your God has banished you, 2 and when you return to the LORD your God and listen to his voice with all your heart and soul, in every way that I am commanding you today, you and your children, 3then the LORD your God will restore you from your captivity. He will have compassion on you, and he will gather you together again out of all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you. 4 Even if your banished people are at the end of the heavens, the LORD your God will gather you together there and take you away from there. 5 The LORD your God will bring you back to the land that your fathers possessed, and then you will possess it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers. 4

6The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, with the result that you will live. 7Then the LORD your God will place all these curses on your enemies and on those who hated you and persecuted you. 8 Once again you will listen to the voice of the LORD, and you will carry out all of his commands that I am giving you today. 9The LORD your God will cause you to be overflowing with good things from all the work of your hands, in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your animals, and in the fruit of your soil. For once again he will rejoice over your prosperity, just as he rejoiced over your fathers, 10when you obey the voice of the LORD your God by keeping his commandments and his statutes written in this Book of the Law, when you return to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 5

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 37 Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Refrain Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Refrain I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever. For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. 6

The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain SECOND LESSON 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 7Therefore, to keep me from becoming arrogant due to the extraordinary nature of these revelations, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me, so that I would not become arrogant. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that he would take it away from me. 9 And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, because my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will be glad to boast all the more in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may shelter me. 10That is why I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For whenever I am weak, then am I strong. VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. (Jn 6:68) STAND 7

GOSPEL Luke 6:17-26 After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: 17[Jesus] went down with them and stood on a level place with a large crowd of his disciples, and a large number of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, as well as from the coastal area of Tyre and Sidon. These people came to listen to him and to be healed of their diseases. 18 Those who were troubled by unclean spirits were also cured. 19 The whole crowd kept trying to touch him, because power was going out from him and healing them all. 20He lifted up his eyes to his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, because yours is the kingdom of God. 21Blessed are you who hunger now, because you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, because you will laugh. 22Blessed are you whenever people hate you, and whenever they exclude and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy because of this: Your reward is great in heaven! The fact is, their fathers constantly did the same things to the prophets. 24But woe to you who are rich, because you are receiving your comfort now. 25Woe to you who are well fed now, because you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, because you will be mourning and weeping. 26Woe to you when all people speak well of you, because that is how their fathers constantly treated the false prophets. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: 8

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. BE SEATED 9

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Since Christ speaks a message of mercy in our suffering, let us pray for the elderly of our congregation. God of grace, you have honored old age with the words: Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. Help us to recognize that when we honor the elderly we are honoring you. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Lift up the hearts and enlighten the minds of our retirees to remain students of your Word into old age, to see purpose in the mission of the Church and to recognize their time, abilities and influence as precious contributions to the Body of Christ. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Help us to regard old age as a gift from you. Teach us to value the experience and knowledge of our seniors. Give us hearts to cherish their company. Grant that believers of all ages be mutually blessed by their interaction with each other. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. By your Spirit help those who experience weakness, pain, loss of sight or hearing, or any other infirmity associated with old age to find solace in your promises. Let us be instruments of your grace and mercy by giving aid, encouragement and a willingness to listen. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. O Ancient of Days, hear us as we pray for a parent, a grandparent or an elderly friend who is in need of your mercy. Silent prayer. God of salvation, keep our elderly members in your care. Provide for all their needs. Shield them from anxiety. Protect them from the devil s temptation to despair. Strengthen their faith in your forgiveness as you prepare them for heaven. One day, take 13

them and all of us to your Kingdom of glory where we may rest from all our labors. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Special prayers All these things we ask in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who also taught us to pray LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. PREFACE THE SACRAMENT The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. 14

It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lived among us as a human being and revealed his glory as your only Son, full of grace and truth. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 15

WORDS OF INSTITUTION Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD BE SEATED 16
