If you are a visitor from out of town, please be sure to introduce yourself to one of the pastors after the service. We welcome all of you to come and worship with us again. - 1 - HOLY COMMUNION Today we have the privilege of receiving Christ s true body and blood in, with and under the bread and wine of Holy Communion. Through this sacrament the Holy Spirit seals to us the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation for the strengthening of our faith. Scriptures also teach that as we commune together, we are publicly testifying to a complete unity of faith based on a confession of all of God s Word. For this reason we respectfully request that all of those who are not members of the WELS or our sister ELS please speak with one of the pastors before communing with us. We remind you to be sure to fill out a communion registration card and place it in the offering plate. For your personal preparation before communing, turn to pages 156 and 11 in the front of the hymnal. Thank you. A PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Oh, look on me with pity though I am weak and poor; admit me to your kingdom to dwell there, blest and sure. I pray, Lord, guide and keep me safe from my bitter foes, from sin and death and Satan; free me from all my woes. Amen. (See also the Personal Prayers on pages 10-11 in the hymnal.) SERVICE THEME The LORD teaches us about the two ways: The way of the righteous and the way of the wicked. ORDER OF WORSHIP Service of Word and Sacrament on page 26 in the front of the hymnal OPENING HYMN - 2 - Thy Strong Word Hymn 280 v 1-4 M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now

and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. PRAYER AND PRAISE M: The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise. SONG OF PRAISE Thy Strong Word Hymn 280 v 5-6 Give us lips to sing thy glory, Tongues thy mercy to proclaim, Throats to shout the hope that fills us, Mouths to speak thy holy name. Alleluia! Alleluia! May the light which thou dost send Fill our songs with alleluias, Alleluias without end! God the Father, light-creator, To thee laud and honor be. To thee, Light from Light begotten, Praise be sung eternally. Holy Spirit, light-revealer, Glory, glory be to thee. Mortals, angels, now and ever Praise the holy Trinity! THE WORD OF GOD LESSON Deuteronomy 30:1-10 At times the LORD disciplines his children so that they will walk in his ways. When all these things come upon you, both the blessing and the curse that I have given you, and you take them to heart while you are among all the nations to which the LORD your God has banished you, 2 and when you return to the LORD your God and listen to his voice with all your heart and soul, in every way that I am commanding you today, you and your children, 3 then the LORD your God will restore you from your captivity. He will have compassion on you, and he will gather you together again out of all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you. 4 Even if your banished people are at the end of the heavens, the LORD your God will gather you together there and take you away from there. 5 The LORD your God will bring you back to the land that your fathers possessed, and then you will possess it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers. 6 The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, with the result that you will live. 7 Then the LORD your God will place all these curses on your enemies and on those who hated you and persecuted you. 8 Once again you will listen to the voice of the LORD, and you will carry out all of his commands that I am giving you today. 9 The LORD your God will cause you to be overflowing with good things from all the work of your hands, in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your animals, and in the fruit of your soil. For once again he will rejoice over your prosperity, just as he rejoiced over your fathers, 10 when you obey the voice of the LORD your God by keeping his commandments and his statutes written in this Book of the Law, when you return to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. Lord God, in mercy receive the prayers of your people. Grant them the wisdom to know the things that please you and the grace and power always to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! - 3 - - 4 -

ADULT CHOIR IN 7:45 SERVICE Day by Day by Paul Christiansen HYMN OF THE DAY My Faith Looks Up to Thee Hymn 402 Day by day in mercy Lord attend me, O what comfort in this hope to rest! All that Thou in love divine dost send me, draws me, Savior, closer to Thy breast. Thou dost love more tenderly than ever earthly father careth for his own: Sorrows heavy burden Thou wilt never suffer me to carry all alone. Day by day, O what joy to live within Thy favor, trustingly to rest my soul in Thee; help me, Lord, that I may never waver, nor forget Thy loving care for me; for I know no matter what betide me, Thou wilt ever hold me by the hand; with Thy presence, Savior, here to guide me, I shall reach at last my native land. Day by day. Copyright (c) 1981 Neil A. Kjos Music Co. OneLicense A-713891 GOSPEL Luke 6:17-26 Jesus pronounces blessings on believers and woes on unbelievers. 17 He went down with them and stood on a level place with a large crowd of his disciples, and a large number of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, as well as from the coastal area of Tyre and Sidon. These people came to listen to him and to be healed of their diseases. 18 Those who were troubled by unclean spirits were also cured. 19 The whole crowd kept trying to touch him, because power was going out from him and healing them all. 20 He lifted up his eyes to his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, because yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, because you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, because you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you whenever people hate you, and whenever they exclude and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy because of this: Your reward is great in heaven! The fact is, their fathers constantly did the same things to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, because you are receiving your comfort now. 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, because you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, because you will be mourning and weeping. 26 Woe to you when all people speak well of you, because that is how their fathers constantly treated the false prophets. M: This is the Gospel of our Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ! - 5 - SERMON 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 The LORD can use tribulations to teach us humility. 7 Therefore, to keep me from becoming arrogant due to the extraordinary nature of these revelations, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me, so that I would not become arrogant. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that he would take it away from me. 9 And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, because my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will be glad to boast all the more in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may shelter me. 10 That is why I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For whenever I am weak, then am I strong. The Thorns of Life 1. They do hurt. 2. They do keep us focused. NICENE CREED - 6 - Pastor Guse We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is

worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. GATHERING OF OUR OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. THE SACRAMENT M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of your glory. You are my God, and I will exalt you. I will give you thanks for you have become my salvation. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of your glory. WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. M: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; grant us your peace. Amen. DISTRIBUTION Please remember that all WELS Communicant Members who receive the Lord s Supper are asked to fill out a Communion Card each time they attend. Visitors are asked to write their home church on the back of the card. Thank you. M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. In the past he spoke to us through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, who is the radiance of his glory. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever. - 7 - DISTRUBUTION HYMNS - 8 - Jesus Sinners Does Receive Hymn 304 Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord Hymn 309 By Grace I m Saved Hymn 384

M: Hear the prayer of your people, O Lord, that the lips which have praised you here may glorify you in the world, that the eyes which have seen the coming of your Son may long for his coming again, and that all who have received in his true body and blood the pledge of your forgiveness may be restored to live a new and holy life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen THE BLESSING M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you.
