Week of June 2, 2013 Lessons for the Leader Does God care about you? How do you know? Note the care and help God gave Noah. Read Genesis 6:9-10,14-22. What does walking with God look like? God revealed to Noah He planned to destroy the earth. God gave Noah detailed instructions to build an ark. Noah, his family, and other living creatures would go inside the ark and ride out a devastating flood. Would your response be the same as or different from Noah's? Read Genesis 7:1,13-19. At God's command, Noah, his family, and a menagerie of living creatures entered the ark. In the midst of what might have been chaos, do you think Noah ever questioned God? When Noah's family and the animals were on-board the ark, God closed the door. Rain fell for 40 days and nights, until everything was wiped off the earth except for those in the ark. Read Genesis 8:1-3,13-20. God remembered Noah and those in the ark. Often the word remember is used when speaking of God initiating a miraculous, saving act. Here, God dried up the floodwaters, and everyone and everything in the ark came out. Noah's first act after leaving the ark was to worship God. When has God "remembered" you? Read Genesis 9:12-16. What do you think of when you see a rainbow? Think of God's grace and peace! When He set the rainbow in the sky, God confirmed His covenant with Noah. God would never again destroy the entire earth with a disastrous flood. The story of Noah helps preschoolers know God cares for and helps people. How can your actions help preschoolers know God loves and cares for them? What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. Introduction to Worship 1aGreet Children Pull It Together Offering container Show preschoolers where to put their offerings. 2aPlay "Fill the Ark" Pull It Together Giant Game Floor Mat*; construction paper (14 blue, 6 brown); small, plastic, land animals Put blue paper in all outer pockets. Place brown paper in the middle 6 pockets. Teacher Tips Use beanbags with animal stickers. Create several gameboards by taping colored paper directly to the floor. Make smaller boards by cutting paper into halves or fourths. Instruct: "Form a line. We'll take turns tossing the animals over the water (blue paper) onto the ark (brown paper)." Allow the first child to toss and retrieve several animals, then go to the back of the line. Continue as time permits. Say: "God took care of the animals on the ark. He protected them from the flood. God also took care of some people. Who were they?" (Noah and his family) Worship 3aWelcome Children and Pray (3 minutes) Say: "I am glad God took care of Noah and his family. I am also glad you are here. What are some ways we can care for each other? (be kind, help, take turns, etc.) God shows love by caring and providing for people. Let's pray." Pray. 4 Sing "Move with Me" (DVD, 2 minutes) 5aSing "God Is Love" (DVD, 2 minutes) 6aIntroduce the Life Application (5 minutes) Pull It Together Scissors Print "Animal Matching" (CD) and cut apart. Place the cards faceup on the floor. Invite a child to choose a baby animal. Choose another child to find the adult match. Display the cards and read aloud the life application. Repeat with remaining cards, leading kids to repeat the life application after you. 7 Practice Bible Skills (3 minutes) Pull It Together Print "Genesis" (CD). Display and read aloud title. Say: "Genesis is the first book in the Old Testament. That makes Genesis the first book in the Bible. The word genesis means 'beginning.' Let's open our Bibles to Genesis chapter 6." Encourage adults to help as needed. 8aTell the Bible Story (7 minutes) Pull It Together Giant Game Floor Mat*, marker, scissors Print "Game Mat Ark" (CD) and cut off borders. Turn back 1 column of mat so 16 pockets show. Lay papers correctly on top of pockets. Turn over papers and number (1-16). Slip papers into pockets with numbers faceup. Teacher Tip Read aloud Genesis 6:14-22 after the second paragraph of story. Open your Bible to Genesis. Explain: "Look at the mat. Behind each number is part of a picture. We'll turn over the papers during our Bible story." Choose a child each time to turn over a paper. Tell the Bible story. God Cared for Noah Based on Genesis 6:9-10,14-22; 7:1,13-19; 8:1-3,13-20; 9:12-16 People chose to disobey God. This made God sad. God said He would destroy (kill, put an end to) all living creatures. But Noah obeyed God. God was happy with Noah. [Turn over any 4 papers.] God told Noah to build an ark (large boat) out of wood. God told Noah how tall, long, and wide to make the ark. The ark would have one door and three decks inside. God told Noah He was sending a flood (when water covers dry land) to cover the earth and destroy everything on earth. [Turn over any 4 papers.] Page 2 of 33

God promised to protect (take care of) Noah and his family. Noah and his wife had three married sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth (JAY feth). God was also going to protect two of each kind of animal. God told Noah to take one male and one female of each kind of animal onto the ark. God told Noah to gather food for his family and for the animals. [Turn over any 4 papers.] Noah did everything God told him to do. God then told Noah to take his family inside the ark. When all the animals, Noah, and his family were in the ark, God shut the door. The rain came. Rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights. Even the tallest mountains were covered with water. As the earth flooded, the ark rose and floated. Water covered the earth for 150 days. God protected Noah, his family, and all the animals in the ark. [Turn over last 4 papers.] The rain stopped and the water went away. God told Noah to come out of the ark. Noah, his family, and all of the animals came out of the ark. The people and animals had been on the ark for more than a year. Noah built an altar and thanked God for keeping His promise. God promised Noah that He would never again destroy the whole earth with water. God placed a rainbow in the sky as a reminder of His promise to Noah and all living creatures. 9aReview the Bible Story (5 minutes) Pull It Together Completed Giant Game Floor Mat from step 8 Say: "Look at the mat. What do you see?" Encourage responses. Invite kids to tell something about the ark (who built it, who said to build it, what was in it, etc.). Say: "God showed love to Noah and his family by protecting them from the flood. God cares for and helps people." Read aloud Statements, pausing for kids to respond "true" or "false." (See Statements under Wrap-Up.) 11aPresent Offering and Pray (2 minutes) 12 Learn the Bible Verse (4 minutes) Pull It Together Paper, marker, container, small plastic animals from step 2 Print Psalm 91:15 from your preferred translation on the paper. Place the small plastic animals in the container. Teacher Tip Print "Psalm 91:15 Paraphrase" (CD). Display and read aloud the Bible verse. Instruct: "Let's say the Bible verse while moving like the animal someone chooses." Invite a kid to choose an animal. Move like the animal while saying the verse. Repeat several times. 13aUse Worship Guides (7 minutes) Pull It Together Worship Guides, markers Distribute materials. Guide children to complete the activities. Say: "Every time you see a rainbow, think about how God protected Noah, his family, and the animals." 14 Make Application and Pray (3 minutes) Ask: "How did God show love to Noah and his family?" Allow children to answer. Apply: "How does God show love to us?" Encourage children to answer. Assist with responses (gives us families, food, and places to live; is always available to talk to; keeps us safe in storms; etc.). State: "God shows love to me and you. Let's pray, thanking God for His love and protection." Pray. 15aGo to Application Activities or Wrap-Up 10 Sing "Glorious Is Thy Name" (DVD, 2 minutes) Week of June 2, 2013 Page 3 of 33

Application Activities Select from the following choices. Each choice is designed for 20 minutes of small group time. Pull It Together Cardboard pieces, scissors, box cutter (adult use only), markers, tape, construction paper, ziplock or paper bags (1 per child) Print "Ark" and "Ark Figures" (CD). Copy 1 set of "Ark Figures" per child. Cut 1 large cardboard rectangle, 1 smaller cardboard rectangle, and 1 construction paper strip for each child. See "Ark" for instructions. Teacher Tips Provide animal stickers or plastic animals. Cut apart each panel of a large box, which will yield 8 arks. Cut out "Ark Figures" and allow kids to tape them to the cardboard pieces. Pull It Together Clear hair gel, food color (rainbow colors), clear packing tape, scissors, small ziplock bags, ¼ or ½ cup measuring cups, marker Print "Allergy Alert" (CD), list hair gel and food color, and post. Teacher Tips Lead kids to fill measuring cup with gel and then place into bags, or draw fill line on bags for kids to squirt gel up to lines. Mix 2 colors in a bag to get another color. dred, d blue = purple dred, d yellow = orange dblue, d yellow = green Worship Through Arts and Crafts Make Arks Say: "God cared for Noah, his family, and the animals by keeping them safe in the ark. Let's make arks to use to retell the Bible story." Distribute "Ark Figures," scissors, and markers. Instruct: "Cut along the dotted lines around the animals and people. You can add color to the figures. We'll fold paper strips and tape them to the figures so they will stand up." Assist kids with cutting, folding, and taping. Display "Ark." Say: "Now, let's build arks. Tape the smaller rectangle [display] above the door in your ark [point]. Add the roof [display] and the small pieces to make your ark stand up [display]." Distribute supplies and help kids make their arks. Retell the Bible story, allowing kids to use their figures. Allow children time to retell the story. Say: "God took care of Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark. God loves us and takes care of us every day. How did God take care of Noah and his family? (kept them safe in ark) How does God take care of us? (food, clothing, shelter, family, church, teachers, friends) Let's thank God for taking care of us." Pray. Suggest kids put their figures in bags to take home. Worship Through Dramatic Play Play with Rainbow Colors Say: "God cared for Noah, and his family, and the animals by keeping them safe in the ark. What did God place in the sky as a reminder of His promise never to flood the earth again? (rainbow) Let's make rainbow colors in the bags to remind us of God's promise." Give each child a ziplock bag. Instruct: "We'll take turns squeezing hair gel into a measuring cup. Pour the gel into your bag. Choose a color for us to add into the bags." State the color choices. Describe how to mix colors to form different colors. Assist kids with filling, closing, and taping bags. Talk about the colors of the rainbow. Say: "Rainbows form in the sky when the sun shines on droplets of water. The colors, beginning at the top, are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Indigo and violet are shades of purple." Allow time for kids to squish and play with their rainbow colors. Challenge kids to put their bags in rainbow color order. Ask: "Why did God place a rainbow in the sky? (as a reminder that He would never flood the whole earth again) How does God show love to us?" Encourage responses (gives us food, clothes, places to live, families, churches, friends, etc.), and then pray. Week of June 2, 2013 Page 5 of 33

Pull It Together Construction paper (red, yellow, blue, green), Giant Game Floor Mat*, scissors, glue sticks Print "God Provides" (CD) and cut apart. Glue pictures to construction paper (food red; clothing yellow; home blue; people green) and cut apart. Teacher Tips Simplify by only using 2 colors at a time. Dot each type card with marker instead of gluing to construction paper (food red dot, etc.). Worship Through Games Connect the Colors Say: "God took care of Noah, his family, and the animals. Name some ways God took care of Noah and his family (provided food, kept them safe, etc.). God also takes care of us. Name some ways God takes care of us (food, clothing, homes, family, etc.). Let's play a game to connect four pictures of ways God takes care of us." Place kids into four teams. Give each team a set of pictures. State: "The goal is for each team to get four of your color pictures in a row in the mat. Pictures can go up and down [show], across [show], or diagonally [show]. One person from the [state color] team will start." Lead the first team to place a picture, then the second team, and so on. Continue adding pictures until a team has four in a row or no more pictures to place. Talk about the pictures after a team gets four in a row. Direct teams to collect their pictures from the mat. Replay as time allows. Say: "God provides for us by giving us food to eat, clothing to wear, homes to live in, and people to love and take care of us. God knows just what we need. God shows His love for us by taking care of us." Say the Bible verse (Psalm 91:15). Pray. Pull It Together 4 brown paper bags, marker, shoe box Print on separate bags: FOOD, CLOTHING, HOMES, PEOPLE. Print "God Provides" (CD), cut apart, and place in shoe box. Cut a circle large enough for a child's hand to fit through in the top of the shoe box. Place bags at 1 end of room. Teacher Tips Use a feely box or large bag. Decorate the shoe box to look like an ark. Add animal stickers to the shoe box. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Sort Items Line up the children at the opposite end of the room from the bags. Say: "God helps us in many ways. Let's look at some of the ways God shows His love for us. The first person in line will reach into the box and pull out a card. Decide if the card belongs with food [point to bag], clothing [point to bag], homes [point to bag], or people [point to bag]. When you know which bag to place the picture in, I will give you a way to move to the bag. I might say, 'fly like a bird.' You will pretend to fly to the bags. Everyone else in the line will make bird sounds. Let's play and explore ways God shows His love." Invite the first child to pull a card and choose a bag to go to. Tell the child a way to move. Encourage all kids to make noises or move in place like the animal. Continue until everyone gets a turn and each card is sorted. Examine the cards by categories. State: "God shows His love to us by taking care of and helping us. He provides food, clothing, homes, and many people who love us. Let's thank God for taking care of us." Encourage kids to say sentence prayers. Pray. Say the Bible verse (Psalm 91:15). Worship KidStyle Preschool Edition Leader Guide 2013 LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Ark Cut a large rectangle and small rectangle. Cut a door in the center of the large rectangle, leaving the bottom side attached. Cut 2 strips of cardboard the same size. Fold each strip in half and make a cut down the middle of each fold. Place strips on opposite sides of bottom of ark. Cut a strip of construction paper the length of the large rectangle (long side) and fold in half. Tape the smaller rectangle to the middle of the ark above the door. Add glue along the top ridge of the smaller rectangle and place folded construction paper on top. Fold paper or cardboard box strips in half (size depends on size of figure). Glue "Ark Figures" to the folded strips. Use "Ark Figures" to tell the Bible story. Ark (June 2) Page 28 of 33
