Virlina District Church of the Brethren Saturday February 16, 2019 E-HEADLINER SOUTHERN AREA MINISTERS MEETING FEBRUARY 18, 2019 The Southern Area Ministers Fellowship will meet at the Cedar Bluff Church on Monday, February 18 at 6:00 p.m. The District Executive Minister will present the program. Persons attending should notify Todd Reed, pastor of the Cedar Bluff Church, of their intention to attend the meal preceding the program. WORLD HUNGER AUCTION WINTER MUSICAL FEBRUARY 24, 2019 The Annual World Hunger Auction Winter Musical will be held at Germantown Brick Church (2363 Brick Church Road, Rocky Mount) on Sunday, February 24 at 4:00 p.m. The groups, After Jack and Haw Patch, will bring a program of uplifting music. Donations will be accepted for a variety of programs addressing hunger issues locally and beyond. These agencies include Heavenly Manna, Stepping Stone Mission, Lake Christian Ministries, RAM House, the Church of the Brethren Global Food Initiative and Heifer International. Refreshments will be served following the program. MINISTERS AND SPOUSES RETREAT - MARCH 1-2, 2019 The annual retreat for ministers and their spouses will be held March 1-2, 2019 at the W.E. Skelton 4-H and Conference Center. The retreat will focus on pastoral leadership in congregational life. Leadership for 2019 will be provided by James F. Mauney, the Bishop Emeritus of the Virginia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Born in Lynchburg, Va., and raised in Norfolk, Va., Jim Mauney graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) in Columbia, S.C. He was ordained in 1978 and served as pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in San Diego CA, and Christ Lutheran Church in Richmond, VA. Jim and his wife, Lynda, are the parents of an adult daughter. They are members of College Evangelical Lutheran Church, Salem. The cost is $150 per couple, $100 for a single and $40 for a commuter. Up to 50% scholarship is available for those who need and apply. ROUNDTABLE SENIOR HIGH RETREAT - MARCH 1-3, 2019 Save the date for the annual Roundtable Youth Retreat at Bridgewater College! MINISTRY AND MISSION DAY IN VIRLINA - MAY 4, 2019 Ministry and Mission Day in Virlina will be held at the Summerdean Church of the Brethren located at 6604 Plantation Road, N.E. in Roanoke, Virginia on Saturday, May 4, 2019. It will be a day of worship, workshops, food, fellowship, and the Annual Conference Briefing. Registration will start at 8:30 a.m. Hymn sing and worship begin at 9:00 a.m. with the message by Roy U. Turpin, the 2019 Virlina District Conference Moderator. The worship theme will be Don t Hide the Cross! with scripture focus from 1 Corinthians 1:18. Following worship, attendees will have the opportunity to pick from several workshops: "Ministry Approaches for New Populations This will provide tools for congregations in reaching those who live close but may be relationally distant. This will be presented by the Josh Brockway of the Discipleship Ministries staff of the Church of the Brethren. Dementia and Spirituality This is a presentation on forms of dementia and the differing characteristics of each type. There will be sharing on how congregations can be welcoming and affirming to families and individuals with dementia who are dealing with this progressive challenge. Ways to provide support and care for the person with dementia and caregivers in the family will be explored. It will be presented by Heddie Sumner, RN, BSN, Educator

Wearing the Striped Shirt: Serving as a Congregational Moderator There is little or no training for persons who serve as congregational moderators. This workshop provides some basics for leading a meeting and understanding simple parliamentary procedure. It will be presented by David K. Shumate, District Executive Minister, and others. Each workshop will be offered twice and provides 0.1 CEU for ordained ministers. Lunch will be provided with information about the menu and cost posted as soon as it is available. Following lunch, the Annual Conference Delegate Briefing will take place. It will be led by the Standing Committee Delegates of the Virlina District and 2019 Annual Conference Moderator, Donita Keister. The Delegate Briefing will begin at 1:30 p.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m. Mark your calendars and come to Ministry and Mission Day in Virlina on May 4, 2019. KINGDOM BUILDING AN EVANGELISM CONFERENCE MAY 31 JUNE 1, 2019 Kingdom Building An Evangelism Conference will be held on May 31 June 1, 2019. Moderator Elect for the 2020 Church of the Brethren Annual Conference, Paul Mundey, will be the keynote speaker. Brother Mundey was formerly the pastor of the Frederick Church in Mid-Atlantic District and was denominational staff for evangelism and church growth. He was instrumental in the design and implementation of the Passing on the Promise process in the late 1980 s. The preliminary schedule of this event is as follows: Friday, May 31 3 6 p.m. Pre-Session for Leaders The Person I Must Become 7-9 p.m. Session One Announcing the Reign of God Saturday, June 1 9 a.m. 12 p.m. Session Two One Size Doesn t Fit All 1 p.m. 3 p.m. Session Three If Jesus Be Lifted Up Sponsored by the Good News Team of the Virlina District Board Commission on Witness, this event will be held at the Rocky Mount, First Church of the Brethren located at 405 Tanyard Road in Rocky Mount, Virginia. Early registration, received by May 10, will be $15 (groups registering five persons will get the sixth person free). From May 11 until the event, registration will be $20. For ordained ministers seeking Continuing Education credit, add $10. This event provides 1.0 CEU from the Christian Growth Institute. VIRLINA DISTRICT CONFERENCE NOVEMBER 8-9, 2019 The Virlina District Conference will be held at the Grandin Court Baptist Church in Roanoke, Virginia on November 8-9, 2019. Please save the date and watch for more information. ITEMS OF GENERAL INTEREST Maurice E. Wright, an ordained minister of the Virlina District, is a patient in the Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. He suffered a heart attack last evening. Lucas Brown is the five month old son of Tim and Kelly Otey Brown. He has Stage Four Rhabdomyosarcoma. Childhood rhabdomyosarcoma is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in muscle tissue. He will have a PET scan on Monday followed by chemo therapy. His grandmother, Kathy Otey, is a member of the Peters Creek Church and formerly a member of the district board. Lucas' father is a pediatric oncologist and his mother, Kelly, is an oncology nurse. Carlton R. Hodges, a licensed minister of the Bethlehem Church and interim pastor of the Red Hill Church, continues to be evaluated for further heart procedures or medication.

E-HEADLINER Page 4 Please pray for Mary June Sheets, from Peak Creek Church of the Brethren in the Southeastern District. She has been diagnosed with colon cancer. She will need radiation to shrink the tumor, then surgery and chemotherapy. Mary June is a graduate of the Christian Growth Institute and known to many in our district. A memorial service for Harold and Hazel Moyer will be held at the Roanoke-Williamson Road Church at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 31, 2019. Harold was the long-time pastor of the Williamson Road Church and a leader in our district and denomination. The service is sponsored by the congregation and the Northern Area Minister s Fellowship of the district. The ordination service for Zachary R. Hatcher, pastor of the Mount Bethel Church in Botetourt County, VA was postponed due to the winter storm last weekend. VENTURES ONLINE COURSE ON AN INCLUSIVE MULTICULTURAL CHURCH MARCH 2, 2019 The March offering from the Ventures in Christian Discipleship program at McPherson (Kan.) College will focus on Growing an Inclusive Multicultural Church. As the world becomes more diverse, church leaders and lay people will need an understanding of what is inclusivity/multiculturalism. Instruction includes a non-threatening approach to invite and help bring more people, especially People of Color, into the churches or agencies of the Church of the Brethren. Learning new information can help change the trajectory of people, whereby they see with new lenses of compassion and inclusivity. Plus participants can learn tips about how current church members can be more welcoming and inclusive. The class will be held online Saturday, March 2 at 9 a.m. 12 p.m. CST (10 a.m. 1 p.m. EST) and taught by Barbara Avent. Barbara is an ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren living in Littleton, Colo. She graduated from Iliff School of Theology earning a Master of Divinity with an emphasis in Justice and Peace. She is cocoordinator of high school trainings about peacemaking, reconciliation and bullying prevention through Agape Satyagraha, a program of On Earth Peace. ROANOKE FIRST CHILI COOK OFF MARCH 9, 2019 On Saturday, March 9, at 5 p.m., the Roanoke First Church of the Brethren (2001 Carroll Avenue, NW) will be hosting their annual CHILI COOK OFF. Funds derived from this event are used to provide Good as Gold Scholarships to Camp Bethel. Those wishing to enter a pot of chili are encouraged to contact Cliff Hartsel at (540) 362-2065. Everyone is invited out to taste test the product. MONTE VISTA SPAGHETTI SUPPER MARCH 9, 2019 Camp Bethel Fundraiser - Monte Vista Church is having a Spaghetti Supper on March 9, 2019 from 4:00-6:00. All donations will go to Camp Bethel through the Seed, Scattered and Sown project. We hope to make it another successful fund raiser for Camp Bethel! BRETHREN PRAYER & WORSHIP SUMMIT - MARCH 29-30, 2019 The Brethren Prayer and Worship Summit will be held at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The theme for 2019 is Praying for the Vision. The purpose of this event is to provide the opportunity for Brethren to earnestly seek God's direction and for the Holy Spirit to guide us. The speakers and prayer time will focus on: VISION LOST ** VISION RECAPTURED ** VISION LAUNCHED. Those speaking will be: Larry M. The goal is to develop resources to fulfill the District's commitment to ministry with our children, youth and young adults; continue new church development and multicultural ministry; to provide assistance to our smaller, struggling congregations; to encourage development of set apart ministerial leadership, to minister to our college students at Radford University and Virginia Tech; and to provide necessary enhancements to fulfill Camp Bethel's future potential. As of February 6, 2019, there are 272 pledges totaling $540,834.12 with receipts totaling $404,993.72. Would you like to help? It's easy.
