Holy Family Parish SNOW, SNOW, SNOW Have you looked out during a snowstorm or shortly after? Everything is so beautiful, covered with a nice layer of fresh, white snow. We may see only the work that is going to be required to clear it off our streets and sidewalks, but for the moment, one cannot deny that it is very beautiful and peaceful. In November or December, it can be refreshing to see the dead grass and trees covered with a fresh blanket as well. However, for most of us, by the time January and February come along, the freshness is gone, and we begin to long for some signs of spring: melting snow, the hope of spring and green grass shooting up are things we all look forward to. I think this can also be a reflection of our Lenten season. Just like winter, we know it comes around each year. It can also be something we kind of look forward to. We can make our plans on what we are going to do, what we are going to give up, how we can improve our prayer life, perhaps a devotion we have been thinking of. Really, almost anything that comes along, and we can begin with gusto. Ash Wednesday hits, and off we go. The first weekend of lent, and everything goes well. The second week hits, and we begin to realize how long lent really is. The third weekend and we are already looking for the end. In terms of our analogy, the snow is getting dirty, and it keeps coming down. It becomes something we dread rather than something we are looking forward to. We can become complacent in our Lenten observances, and only want it to be over with. With this in mind, I think there is a way to keep our Lenten observances fresh in our minds and to keep them from becoming boring or a burden. Whichever leg we have chosen to focus on, don t forget to utilize the other two aspects. For instance, if it is a deepening of prayer that we desire, don t forget to set aside as aspect of almsgiving and fasting to go with it. If we are offering something up (fasting) join to that an element of prayer and almsgiving to bring it alive. Utilizing these three weapons the Church gives us, we can remain faithful to our Lenten observances, and perhaps surprise yourself when the Holy Spirit blesses these in ways we would never expect. May God keep you and your loved ones safe during this holy season. Fr. Jim 3 PRAYER CORNER God, grant healing and peace to the sick of our communities and those who have requested our prayers.
