Dominic Hoàng Công Thái Dương, President, National Executive Committee In his famous exhortation, Fr. Francis Xavier Gautrelet, SJ, charged the young Jesuits in France to become missionary disciples through prayers and daily offering to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Those inspiring words became the focal point for which all of us as Eucharistic Youth Members, a branch of the Apostleship of Prayer, now known as the Pope s Worldwide Prayer Network, are called to do. Pope s Intentions Pray that consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves, and be present among the poor, the marginalized, and those who have no voice. What does it mean to be a missionary disciple? Missionary discipleship takes place within the context of evangelization is helping others to have a personal encounter with Christ. To help others encounter Christ, we must have an intimate encounter with Christ first ourselves for we cannot give what we do not possess. Depending on how the Holy Spirit leads us, encountering Christ may occur through sacraments, prayers, adoration, works of mercy, scriptures, etc.., that allow for Christ to

Specifically for us as the VEYM, participation in the celebration of the Eucharist and we receiving Jesus, our summit and peak of living the Eucharistic Day, is the most intimate way in which we encounter Christ. At that moment of holy union, we are transformed and are becoming more like Him. Because of His love for us, each one of us has the opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ, our God, in the most profound way possible. Take a moment to reflect on the following question: In what ways have you encountered Christ today? As we come to encounter Christ, there is a need to share His love with others, not just with knowledge and understanding, but also through service to those most in need. In his first general audience, Pope Francis spoke of missionary discipleship as evangelization beyond the dull or mechanical way of living our faith and open the doors of our hearts, our lives, our parishes, or our movements to others to bring them the light and the joy of our faith in Christ. In observing our local Vietnamese community, often, we are comfortable and complacent within the parameters of our Chapter or parish. Our activities (e.g., parish picnic, chapter summer camp, chapter field trip, parish senior club, chapter Christmas party, chapter anniversary, etc ) while good, are directed inward and generally are limited to existing members. Effort to serve those who have been ostracized, spiritually lost or in need (people who are homeless, sick and imprisoned; immigrants; people with mental illness; teenagers who are pregnant; youth with gang involvement; etc ) are infrequent and uncommon. Just as Christ s disciples were sent on missions to evangelize to all people, we too must not be afraid and boldly take the initiative to go out to others, to the periphery, where people who have been marginalized or fallen away. As we begin the new academic year, I invite each one of you to be that missionary disciple. You are invited to enter into an intimate encounter with Christ, experience a conversion of the heart, and lead others in encountering the joy and love of Jesus that you yourself are blessed with. As you evangelize by means of missionary discipleship (Mt 28:19), just remember, you are not alone (Mt 28:20). I also invite you to take a moment to pray for our Universal Church, our beloved country Vietnam and our new National Executive Committee so that they may have the strength and wisdom to overcome all challenges and adversaries. Please also say a special prayer for me as I assume my new servant leader role and be assured that you, Đoàn Lê Bảo Tịnh, CT, and Miền Đông Bắc are always in my prayers.
