FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER 5/14/17 PASTOR S DESK The recent furor over delays at Penn Station brought to mind the tragic destruction of the original station. Iconic of that act of vandalism was the image of one of the great stone eagles that had adorned the façade lying discarded in a trackside swamp in the Jersey meadows. Fortunately, at least one of those eagles was preserved and has been displayed ever since at the Hicksville Station of the LIRR. But until recently, such preservation had been rare. One notable exception has been art dealer, Ivan Karp, who owns and operates a gargoyle museum in upstate New York. Cont. Granted that the types of decorations that Ivan has so wonderfully preserved are superfluous and unnecessary to a building s utilitarian nature. But, it is precisely the superfluous and whimsical that makes God s creation so delightful. Our creator never skimped on anything that would bring delight to the human race that he has created in his own image and likeness. And for this, we give thanks, just as we owe a debt of gratitude to the Ivan Karp s of our world. Speaking of people who never skimp on adding beauty and delight to our lives, we celebrate Mothers Day today with thanks to all our mothers here and in heaven for all that they have done for us. WEEKDAY MASS SCHEDULE TO CHANGE Since the 1950 s, Ivan has been rescuing decorative stone work from buildings that are being demolished in New York City. They weren t saving anything, Mrs. Karp said. When a building was under demolition, Ivan would go up to the foreman and say: See that up there? Bring it down gently. Ivan would give him $10 and go back at the end of the day, and the foreman would tell him where it was. About a century ago, decorative elements such as gargoyles and angels and gryphons went out of fashion; and as a result, buildings lost their delightful elements of whimsy. Beginning on Monday, May 14 th, Mass will be offered only at 9:00AM on weekdays. Father Johnson s retreat and vacation break, combined with the uncertainty about priest-staffing in the future, makes it prudent to limit our weekday schedule at least for the time-being. By the middle of June, we hope to have more information from the Office of Clergy Personnel about staffing for our parish when the annual June priest transfers take effect. Both Fr. Johnson and I will offer the Mother s Day Masses while we are making our annual retreat later this month. My thanks for your patience as we continue to grapple with the sudden, tragic loss of Fr. Bill Dulaney. My thanks, also, to Fr. Tom Pettei, our Episcopal Vicar, to Msgr. Bob Pawson, the retired Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, and to the entire priest staff at Our Lady of the Snows for the generous help they have provided to Fr. Johnson and me over the past several months. Please note that Thursday, May 25 th, the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord is a holyday of obligation. We will continue to maintain our usual Holyday schedule on that day.
