D I O C E S E OF S U P E R I O R OFFICE OF THE BISHOP January 2, 2019 Greetings fathers, parish life coordinators, parish directors, catechetical leaders, and lay leaders/business administrators, On April 29 th and 30 th, 2019, the Diocese will be leading a trip for high school students and chaperones to the State Capitol in Madison for a very important event called Catholics at the Capitol. The Wisconsin Catholic Conference organizes Catholics at the Capitol every other year as a way of gathering Catholics from around the state for prayer, formation and advocacy. This action-packed event consists of prayer services led by the five Wisconsin Bishops, a keynote talk and breakout sessions on topics such as Catholic Social Teaching, leadership and the many social issues prevalent in our culture such as poverty, right-to-life issues and more. To conclude the day, we will visit our state representatives offices. In the past, the majority of the participants came from the Dioceses of Madison and Milwaukee, with some participants from Green Bay and La Crosse, but very few if any from the Superior Diocese. At a gathering this fall, my brother bishops strongly encouraged me to facilitate a trip for the young people of our Diocese. The bishops went so far as to each donate $1000 toward such a trip. Thanks to their generosity and the generosity of the donors to the Bishop s Legacy Circle, our diocese will be able to take a bus load of young people to this important event this year! The trip will only cost the teens and chaperones $25 per person and will include a charted bus ride to Madison, a night in a hotel, breakfast and lunch, and admission to the conference! Participants would be responsible for 2 meals. This event would constitute a great opportunity for youth in your parish who exhibit strong leadership skills in either Church or civic matters, to get more deeply invested in the Catholic Church at the diocesan and even statewide level, and to be exposed to the intersection of faith with politics and social advocacy. To promote participation in this event, I would like to ask you to personally invite a few of your youth who have shown strong leadership skills to attend. We ask that you please make this invitation as soon as possible and register your young people and chaperones. We will take one bus and seats are first come first served. The deadline for registrations is March 15 th, 2019. Forms and registration information are available on the diocesan website at catholicdos.org/catholics-at-thecapitol. The current list of speakers and topics is not yet available, but will be published on our website as soon as it is made public. Thank you for your support of this important event! Yours in Christ, Most Rev. James P. Powers Bishop of Superior 1201 HUGHITT AVENUE, P.O. BOX 969, SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN 54880 715-394-0205 FAX 715-395-3149

January 5, 2018 Dear DRE/CRE: With the approval and support of the Diocese of Superior, Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center is offering an open confirmation retreat for any youth who is planning to be confirmed in 2019. This retreat will fulfill the diocesan requirements for a retreat before confirmation. If you have less than 8 confirmands at your parish, or any of your confirmands are not able to attend your parish sponsored retreat, this would be a great opportunity. The day will include the sacrament of reconciliation, mass, talks, team building activities, various prayer services, lunch, snacks and other reflection activities. Attached is a flier and a registration form. You ll see that we are requesting that each youth attend the retreat along with an adult, such as their confirmation sponsor. This will enable the retreat to go according to its design plus provide a chance for the sponsor to mentor and support the youth in their faith journey. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the diocese of Superior and confirmands in this capacity. Please be in touch if you have any questions. In the meantime, know of my prayers and gratitude for each of you. Peace and All Good, S. Julia Walsh FSPA Marywood Confirmation Retreat Facilitator
