We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life. I am concluding my series on the commandments by discussing the final two, the 9th and the 10th. They are primarily concerned with thoughts and attitude about matters discussed in previous commandments. The ninth commandment says, That shalt not covet thy neighbor s wife. The Church places her teaching on purity of heart in relationship to others under this commandment. The catechism associates the commandment with Jesus own words: Everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. The tenth commandment forbids the coveting of one s neighbors goods. The catechism associates this commandment with Jesus words: Where treasure is, there will your heart be also. Both commandments hearken back to concupiscence, the human weakness born of our separation from God, that impedes the reason from fully directing the will in responding to good natural desires. The natural inclination to a relationship of love between a man and woman can be tainted by selfishness in pursuit of pleasure. That natural inclination to acquire and use goods for providing appropriately for one s self and family can deviate into selfishness and indulgence. Both commandments call for a purity of heart that approaches daily life with a view to the God given meaning of what He has created. By prayer, discipline and formation one develops a mastery over the proper appreciation of relationship and things. The commandments remind us that we step into the realm of sin even with our thoughts. We are called to control whether we will dwell on thoughts that feed our inordinate desires. Similarly, we manage the influences in our daily life that will either support or challenge a correct view of all that God has created. These commandments call for a special attention to how we make use of the media. In the area of entertainment and advertising others seem to know of our human vulnerability and how to exploit it. Yours in Christ,

St. Cecilia Parish, Bainbridge Island, WA PRINCIPAL S CORNER In one week s time, students will perform PETER PAN, the musical, in Conger Hall. All parents, parishioners and community members are invited to attend. Our SCCS 5th/6th graders, Mr. Dean Lancaster, and four chaperones spent May 24-26 at Camp Hamilton. Students participate in our school-wide play in a variety of ways. They are set designers, stagehands, assistant directors, actors and singers. Students decided how they wanted to be a contributing member of our performance of PETER PAN. Students rehearsed for many days after school to prepare for our final shows. While the final performances are our end goal, so much learning happens in the weeks leading up to the play. It takes an enormous amount of time, energy, patience and passion to lead a school play across so many grade levels. We are ever grateful for Director Jennifer Cunningham s commitment to the entire process of the production of PETER PAN. PLEASE JOIN US THIS COMING FRIDAY OR SATURDAY. THIS IS ONE EVENT YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS! PETER PAN Students learned about Life Science, participated in cooperative activities with students from other Seattle area Catholic schools and had a fabulous time! JUNE 2 nd - 2:00 p.m. JUNE 3 rd - 6:15 p.m. CONGER HALL With joy, Susan Kilbane St. Cecilia Catholic School is a faith-based community that inspires an inquisitive mind and a lifelong commitment to learning and stewardship.
