Pentecost Season: May 23 August 28 (The pulpit attire is Red) PENTECOST, the fiftieth day after Easter, comes from the Greek word for fiftieth, pentekoste. Greek speaking Jews called the Jewish Feast of Weeks the Day of Pentecost. Acts 2 tells how the anxious and fearful disciples, who had gathered on the Day of Pentecost, were filled with the Holy Spirit and thereafter preached boldly the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the day on which the church received the Holy Spirit. COLORS FOR PENTECOST: RED OR RED ON WHITE. RED, THE COLOR OF FIRE, REPRESENTS THE HOLY SPIRIT. General Theme For This Quarter: CHRISTIAN COMMITMENT IN TODAY S WORLD The study this quarter focuses on Christian commitment. Its three units explore the nature, foundation, and marks of commitment as they apply to Christians in today s world. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: UNIT 1 THE NATURE OF CHRISTIAN COMMITMENT These four lessons explore the nature of Christian commitment. Genuine commitment is visible to others and grows with our desire to please God and to sustain one another in allegiance (faithfulness). Finally, Christian commitment is both reinforced and strengthened by concrete actions that grow out of a desire to please God. CLASSES FOR EVERYONE!! CLASSES FROM KINDERGARTEN TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL TWO CHOICES FOR ADULTS DAILY BIBLE READING COMMITMENT JUNE *JULY* AUGUST 2010 YOUNG ADULTS AGE 19 AND UP ADULTS ALL AGES WELCOME THIS WEEK S: VISIBLE TO GOD 1Thessalonians 1 In Paul s time, Thessalonica was part of the vast Roman Empire and a commercial and cultic center of Greece. Paul s work with Silvanus (a Greek variant of the name Silas) yielded their first converts at Thessalonica. The new Christians were subjected to persecution; yet, Paul praised the church for being an example to others. For the Thessalonians, the example of their daily lives became a witness of the world, proclaiming their faith and their commitment to Jesus Christ. NEXT WEEK S: June 13, 2010 PLEASING TO GOD 1 Thessalonians 2:1 2 In this text written to the Thessalonian church, Paul referenced at Philippi where he and Silas (Silvanus) suffered physical violence. Because of Paul s belief that God is the source and author of the Gospel, the apostle was committed to a ministry of communicating the truth and love of God through Jesus Christ. Paul taught that all we do should grow out of an earnest commitment to please God. MOBC Mount Olive Baptist Church Prayer, Praise and Meditation Garden The Prayer, Praise and Meditation Garden got off to a wonderful start. As you may already know, as a fundraising project, it must be selfsufficient. The cost of constructing the garden will be paid for by the proceeds collected. To date we have collected more than half of the money needed for the installation of the garden. However, since the discounted cost has ended, sales have slowed significantly. We have talked with many people who have expressed an interest in purchasing a paver or pavers but have not taken the time to do the paper work, decide what they would like engraved on the paver or write the check. If you are one of those persons, we urge you to act now. The Prayer, Praise and Meditation Garden will stand as a permanent testament and inspiration to others in years to come as to the goodness and faithfulness of God. It is important that we, as a people, document our own legacy. YOU are a part of that legacy. This is an opportunity for YOU to pass on to your descendants that YOU were a part of or a friend to the congregation who prayed, trusted in God, sacrificed, persevered in spite of obstacles and prevailed. This garden will also be an opportunity for us to document our history. Years ago we had a church secretary by the name of Mrs. Kamborian. She was an amateur genealogist researching the history of the families in the Glen Allen area going back to before the Civil War. She said that the greatest thrill for her, when she came to work at Mount Olive, was to meet some of the descendants of slaves whose ancestor s names had appeared in preserved documents of the plantation owners. Mount Olive has a rich history. But it does not matter if your ancestors founded the church or YOU are still in new members training, YOU are a part of building the legacy of the Mount Olive Baptist Church. In years to come, what identity, message, testimony, or inspirational scripture, do you want to pass on to those who will come to the garden for comfort, reassurance or a connection to the Source? One of these persons could be your descendant. For additional information, please pick up a paver brochure from the information table in the narthex or outside of the church office. If you have any questions concerning the project, you may contact any member of the committee listed below. Your application and payment for a paver(s) may be given to any member of the committee or left with the secretary in the church office. Please be mindful of the Church and who we represent as members of the Body of Christ. To help us determine what is/is not appropriate, please use the following guidelines when selecting appropriate casual dress: Choose clothing that is comfortable, yet communicates a positive message, casual does not mean sloppy, avoid clothing that is too revealing or tight fitting. Scripture Reference: Whether therefore ye eat, or drink or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. MOBC How To Accept Jesus Christ into Your Heart Perhaps while reading the announcements you realized you have never made a Christian commitment. Don t delay that decision! We encourage you to embrace God s love today and receive the salvation that only Jesus Christ gives. Here are five simple steps you can take to find assurance of salvation. 1. Recognize your need. The Bible tell us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) All of us are sinners, and we must admit our need for a Savior. 2. Repent of your sins. Our sins create a wall that separates us from God. By confessing our sins and turning from them, you will find forgiveness. The Bible promises: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 3. Believe in Jesus. God sent His only Son to die so that He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). 4. Receive His salvation. God has given us a great gift in His Son, but we must receive His gift. Thank Him for loving and forgiving you, and ask Him to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 5. Confess your faith. The Bible assures us: If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). You have been born again and are now part of God s family. Tell someone else what Jesus has done in your life!
