Oct 29, 2017 - Page 3 FATHER ANTHONY S FAITH FORMATION CORNER Matthew 22:34-40: You Shall Love the Lord Your God and Your Neighbor The commandment to love God and neighbor can be viewed in either way: it is one single commandment; or it is a two-fold commandment (of loving God and of loving our neighbor). Anyway, one cannot stand apart from the other. And in a sense, our whole Christian faith revolves around this important commandment of love. In Jewish traditions, there was a similar story about a pagan (Gentile) who came to two rabbis and posed the challenge to them: I will become a convert on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah (first five books of the Bible) while I stand on one foot. The first rabbi became irritated and drove him away with a stick. The second rabbi wisely said to him: What is hateful to you do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary on it. Go and learn it. Indeed the commandment to love is what the Torah is all about. Also, that command to love is what our Christian spirituality is all about. We talk about many things as Catholics, but in the end all that has to lead us back to this great commandment of Jesus However, in the context of the Old Testament, one s neighbor was one s fellow Israelite. In the Gospels, Jesus takes that understanding further beyond its ordinary scope. So for example, in the story of the good Samaritan (Luke 10), it turns out that the victim s true neighbor was not any Israelite, but a foreigner a Samaritan. In the Sermon on the Mount (see Matthew 5:43-45), Jesus exhorts his disciples to love not only their neighbors but even their enemies. For us Catholic Christians, the commandment to love is also of great importance. However, like the Israelites of old, we can also be selective in a subtle way when it comes to the question: Who is my neighbor? In the context of our current situations, my neighbors may as well be those undocumented immigrants. [I fully realize that sensitive topics on social justice (such as immigration) can create a lot of controversies. But as Catholics, we cannot ignore these topics: which are neither left-wing nor right-wing, but are very biblical]. My neighbors in this so-called postmodern society may be those who are other, who are different because of faith, culture, history or politics The Lord Jesus invites us to have genuine concern for all these people. Trying our best to love God and to love one another that is what our faith is about! CHÚA NHẬT TUẦN 30 TN A Mt 22,34-40 CHỈ MỘT GIỚI RĂN YÊU THƯƠNG Chúa Giê-su đáp: Ngươi phải yêu mến Đức Chúa, Thiên Chúa ngươi hết lòng, hết linh hồn và hết trí khôn ngươi. Đó là điều răn lớn nhất và điều răn đứng đầu. Còn điều răn thứ hai, cũng giống điều răn ấy, là: ngươi phải yêu người thân cận như chính mình. (Mt 22,37-39) Suy niệm: Nếu đã tin Đức Chúa là Thiên Chúa thì cũng dễ chấp nhận rằng yêu mến Người trên hết mọi sự là điều phải lẽ. Mời Bạn: Phải chăng, để làm môn đệ chân chính của Thầy Giê-su, đây là thách đố lớn nhất cho chúng ta? Làm sao có thể nhìn thấy Chúa nơi người khác để yêu thương khi họ thật khó thương? Khi họ đang gây ra cho mình biết bao điều khó chịu? Khi họ khinh bỉ, cư xử lạnh nhạt với mình? Khi họ vu khống, mạ lỵ, áp bức mình cách bất công? Bạn ơi, bí quyết để yêu người như chính mình là yêu người như Chúa yêu ta: Nếu như Chúa Cha yêu thương chúng ta khi Ngài nhìn chúng ta qua khuôn mặt Người Con Chí Ái chịu khổ nạn, thì chúng ta cũng phải nhìn người khác để yêu thương họ nơi dung mạo đau khổ của Đức Kitô chịu đóng đinh. Sống Lời Chúa: Tìm ra một điểm đáng yêu, một lý do để yêu thương nơi người mà bạn cảm thấy khó thương nhất. Cầu nguyện: Lạy Chúa Giê-su đáng mến, trên thập giá, Chúa đã tiêu diệt sự thù ghét. Oct 29, 2017 - Page 6 COMUNIDAD HISPANA EQUILIBRIO Las lecturas bíblicas de hoy recalcan el lazo fundamental que existe entre el amor de Dios y el amor al prójimo, especialmente a los más necesitados. El amor de Dios debe impulsarnos a amar a la gente a quien Dios aprecia. A la inversa, el trabajo por la justicia y la caridad en pro de los necesitados debe estar enraizado en nuestro amor a Dios. Sin embargo, esa conexión y equilibrio no son siempre fáciles de mantener en nuestra vida. Aun en las órdenes religiosas hallamos a algunos cristianos más orientados hacia la contemplación y la oración, mientras que otros son más activos en su servicio a los oprimidos. Hoy Jesús nos recuerda la necesidad de ambos aspectos en la vida de fe. Una " decisión difícil " Los defensores del aborto a menudo se refieren a la decisión de tener un aborto como una " decisión difícil ". Por qué es una decisión difícil? La razón es muy simple y obvio. Todos sabemos que el feto es una persona en crecimiento dentro del útero de la madre. Así que, por supuesto, es " difícil". La elección de interrumpir la vida de otro ser humano es una " decisión difícil ". Si el niño no nacido no era una persona, lo que sería tan difícil acerca de la elección de poner fin a su vida? Después de casi tres meses batallando con esta enfermedad una señora me regaló una estampita de san Martín de Porres que contenía un pedacito de su hábito. Dormí con esta estampita debajo de mi almohada y al tercer día sané de mi dolor. Fue así como conocí por primera vez a este santo negrito y a sus animalitos. Martín fue un religioso dominico de nacionalidad peruana que vivió de 1579 a 1639 y fue canonizado en 1962. Sin lugar a dudas, es uno de los santos más populares de América Latina. En él encontramos una persona con la cual nos podemos identificar ya que muchas veces a nosotros nos limitan las oportunidades debido a nuestro origen y el color de nuestra piel. Por su origen (era hijo de un español y de una africana) ilegítimo y su color mulato, Martín tuvo problemas para ingresar a la Orden de los Predicadores. Eventualmente la santidad de sus obras y la fama de sus milagros le abrieron camino para incorporarse plenamente a los dominicos.
