lailata... Never Say Never After surviving the infamous cables section on Half Dome in Yosemite last year, some of us had pledged never to try anything risky again. And yet here we were, scrambling over lava boulders to peer into the steaming cauldron of a volcano. The hike to the rim of Mount St. Helens Volcanic Crater was never meant to be a cakewalk. But after successful dayhikes in previous years to Grand Canyon, Mt. Whitney and Half- Dome, which had been higher or longer, we thought our group of 11 hikers had considerable experience in doing tough hikes. However, the unusual terrain of lava rocks and ash on the slopes of Mount St. Helens was something we had never experienced before. A fierce explosion in year 1980 down-sized Mount St. Helens from a 9677 ft snow-capped mountain to an 8365 ft remnant with a huge crater, and the area had been off limits to hikers for many years. Back in February, we had applied for permits online to hike above 4800 ft, to the rim of Mt St Helens Crater, and we managed to get our permits for August 11. Flying into Portland, Oregon a day before the hike and staying in Cougar, Washington put us right in the vicinity of the trail. We stayed at Lone Fir Resort where we picked up our permits. After having pizza for dinner we got into our ritual of preparing our backpacks for the next day. We caught a few hours of sleep and were up at 3 AM to get ready for the hike. The drive to the trailhead, called Climber s Bivouac, took us about 40 minutes, and was made more challenging due to morning fog and our cars skidding a few times over the last section of the forest road which is unpaved. In the parking lot we took out our trekking poles and turned on our headlamps to hit Ptarmigan trail at 5 AM. The first couple of miles are well-marked as we crossed Loowit trail, gaining over a thousand feet of elevation. Daylight was just breaking through and we could see Mt. Hood to our south, its summit shrouded in a cloak of clouds. paryz 4

lailata... Once we cleared the tree-line, we were confronted with a ridge of lava rocks of various sizes surrounded by snow on both sides, and the trail vanished! This route to the top is called Monitor ridge and is marked with shoulder height wooden posts at regular intervals. We gamely started scrambling over the boulders in the direction of the next wooden post. The way up became steeper and steeper, and soon we had to put our trekking poles away and use our hands. We were glad we had brought thick gloves since the lava rocks were jagged and rough to touch. One of the team members was ready to call it quits and others persuaded him to continue and carried his backpack. There was no shade on the rocks once the sun climbed up over the horizon. We made steady progress climbing over the boulders, past couple of seismic monitoring sites, taking frequent stops to hydrate and eat snacks. Even though there was considerable snow on the slopes of the mountain, the sun was beginning to feel hotter as the day progressed. A light breeze provided some relief over the shade-less terrain. Just when we felt that the lava rocks would never end we looked up at what seemed like the summit of the crater. There appeared to be stretches of sand leading up the last thousand feet of the climb. Once the rocks got smaller we started walking over what was ash and pumice. It made for an interesting climb as we would spin our wheels on many occasions to find traction. After nearly six hours of hiking and scrambling we finally reached the top. At the summit we found ourselves standing on a narrow ledge with the crater on the other side. As we started getting accustomed to the height, we slowly looked around to take in the view. Down below we saw a large lava dome in the middle of the crater partially covered in snow. We could see steam rising through one corner of the crater floor and paryz 5

lailata... heard some rocks fall over along the walls. Further ahead was Crystal Lake, filled on one end with trees that got knocked down during the eruption. Up at a distance we could see Mt. Rainier and to our east was Mt. Adams looming over the horizon. The raw beauty of the wilderness was mesmerizing. An hour had passed by as we enjoyed the view and took pictures. After replenishing our insides and reapplying sunscreen on the outside, we started our descent. We literally slid down the top section of ash and pumice, and wished we had brought gaiters as small stones made their way inside our shoes. Stopping to empty our shoes of the debris we contemplated the challenge of getting down the lava boulders. It was tiring going down on the boulders as we had to stay constantly alert because one misstep could result in fractured bones. We saw some daring hikers bypassing the rocks and glissading over the snow. But since we were not properly equipped and didn t want to lose the wooden markings, we took the hard route down. Once we reached the tree-line it was easy going. After what seemed like an eternity we finally made it to the parking lot by 3:30 PM, completing the 10 mile roundtrip hike. There was great euphoria and the usual chest thumping as we celebrated yet another successful hike. For now, we hang our boots, until the next big one. - Kedar Gidh paryz 6

lailata... VITAL IMPORTANCE OF THOUGHT We just celebrated the Diwali festival which symbolizes the victory of Good over Evil. But the moot question is how are good and evil born in the first place? We perceive events which are presented to us through the filters of our own thoughts yet each person may differ in which he /she relates to objects by projecting his / her own emotion in forming an opinion. One may see good in an event, the other could see bad. Thought Leads To Action : Edward Tolman, an experimental Psychologist, was first to demonstrate that thoughts influence action. He also concluded that some kind of thought is necessary to explain overt behavior. Thoughts can refer to ideas, or arrangement of ideas which result from thinking. Although it is a fundamental human activity, there is no scientifically accepted definition of thought. We still don t have plausible explanation as to which brain function gives rise to it. How thoughts come and go still remains a mystery. Normally thoughts are fleeting mental images and have no consequences till one chooses to give them importance. But it is true that our minds are vulnerable to negative thoughts causing us doubts, worry, anxiety. etc. For some, such thoughts, in spite of best efforts, gate crash and return to haunt with regular frequency. Some effort is often necessary to change this mindset through prayer, meditation etc. Thoughts---Good, Bad, And Ugly : Good thoughts: Good thoughts are like software. They enter your brain, scan your problems, edit your tensions, download your solutions, delete your worries and often save you from many dangers. But the virus of bad thoughts would do just the opposite. It is worthwhile to know how a simple thought can be vitally important and lead to life changing inventions and discoveries or events impacting the entire humanity. If we glance at the multitude of inventions during the past century and a half, we will be astonished to find how just a small initial thought in the minds of these inventors resulted in mind-boggling inventions. Invention of Steam engine by George Stephenson, Automobile by Henry Ford, Airplane by Wright Bros, Mechanized Ship by John Fitch. Telephone by Graham Bell, and recently Cell phones, I-phones by S Job etc.. paryz 10

lailata... All of them achieved these life changing inventions only with small single thought and by translating it into action. Similar feats were achieved in medical field through inventions like Penicillin (antibiotic), Anti-polio vaccine, X-ray, Process of Pasteurization etc. Einstein just thought of harnessing the power of the atom. It resulted in invention of the atomic bomb which helped end the second World War. Now atomic energy has become a boon to humanity as a non-polluting generator of electricity. The Nobel Laureates in various fields of achievement started their projects with a simple thought. They focused on this thought and made it their life s mission. Mahatma Gandhi liberated India from the mighty British Rulers with a simple thought of "Non-violent Resistance" There are umpteen number of such examples where a small vital thought led to mighty achievements. Bad Thoughts : The bad thought, on the contrary, particularly in the mind of a person with authority, can cause havoc.. The example of Adolf Hitler comes to mind.. He had a simple thought of making Germany a supreme world power and expanding the German empire. When he tried to translate this into action with the obsession of a maniac, the result was Second World war. Millions of soldiers in Germany and other European countries as well as from U S A, Japan and also India were needlessly killed. Besides, about 60 million Jews were mercilessly eliminated in the horror called "Holocaust". In recent history, the late Mr. Saddam Husain of Iraq, and Mr. Basher al-assad of Syria have also killed thousands of their own citizens just to retain power. Again this is the result of an initial bad thought. Ugly Thoughts : The Moral and Religious degradation in a handful of religious perverts popularly called Jihadists, is the result of indoctrinating young minds with ugly thoughts by perverted religious Zealots. These misguided youths are resorting to mindless violence causing death of thousands of innocent men, women and children. The only solution to this menace is to change their mindset by providing them more positive avenues of useful engagement in society. Conclusion : We have thus seen how a simple thought can be of vital importance. This is equally applicable in the field of mental healthcare. The discipline of positive Psychology not only paryz 11

lailata... helps mental patients to recover through positive thinking, but also helps inculcate civic virtues in groups and moves individuals towards better citizenship, responsibility, civility, moderation, tolerance, and productive Work- Ethic. Gautam Buddha in his collection of sayings called Dhammpada declares-- "All that we are is the result of what we have thought, it is founded on thought and made up of our thought." Our own Sant Tukaram has advised us thus " Man kara re prasanna, Man kara re prasanna, Man sarva siddhi che karan". This means keep your mind happy because only a happy mind alone can achieve all mighty goals. The late Maharshi Mahesh Yogi, proponent of Transcendental Meditation, was of the opinion that if 20 to 30 p. c. of the population of the world could meditate for about 20 to 30 minutes per day, the tendency towards violence, immorality and war would be drastically curtailed and there would be greater peace in the world just by changing the mindset of people. Inner Voice : Most of the time as a rule of Thumb, our Inner Voice is the best guide for differentiating between right and wrong. This inner voice becomes the right vital thought to guide us. I am reminded of a poem on this subject. "There is a voice inside you That whispers all day long, I feel this is right for me I know that this is wrong, No teacher, preacher, parent or friend, Or wise man can decide What is right for you, Just listen to the Voice that speak Inside". Fortunately, Indians in general and Maharashtrians in particular observe the healthy practice of inculcating in kids our traditional values of the scriptures like Bhagwadgita. This helps them in cultivating positive outlook and face ups and downs of life with courage and equanimity and strive to successfully achieve their life s dreams. - Arvind Nadkarni paryz 12

AiBanaMdna... Congrats to Sanjna Shelukar, a Girl Scout since kindergarten, for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award in April 2017. She is currently a senior at Wissahickon High School. The Gold Award, highest achievement in Girl Scouting, challenges scouts to change the world by identifying and solving a community problem. For her project, Sanjna designed and handmade Soothing Sleeves for breast cancer patients at Fox Chase Cancer Center. Soothing Sleeves, flannel covered foam with Velcro to fit around the car seat belt, are designed to alleviate the pain breast cancer patients endure while driving. Furthermore, Sanjna created a website, http://www.soothingsleeves.com/, to raise awareness of the needs of breast cancer patients and provide instructions on how to make Soothing Sleeve. With the help of her community friends, she donated 40 Soothing Sleeves to Fox Chase Cancer Center. She raised funds for this effort by making t-shirts for the 2014 Philadelphia Ganesh Festival. Sanjna is grateful to our PGF and PMM community for their support in achieving this award. On March 18, 2017, Scripps regional spelling bee for Bucks and Montgomery counties was held at Pennridge Middle School in Silverdale, PA. Fifty-eight students from third through eighth grade, who won spelling bees at their home schools earned the right to participate in the bee. In the end, Chinmay Bapat from Methacton School District s Skyview Upper Elementary School in Eagleville, Montgomery County, emerged victorious. He clinched the 2017 Regional Spelling Bee champion title by spelling out jactance a word of French origin that means vainglorious boasting. In addition to a crystal award and other prizes, Chinmay won an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for himself and his family to participate in the 90th National Spelling Bee in late May. Chinmay s parents Shilpa and Hemu, and his twin sister Uma are thrilled by his achievement. paryz 15
