! The Bible! origin (where it came from)! reliability (that it can be trusted)! resilience (that it is God s Word)! relevance (for the Christian s life)

The Bible, at first sight, appears to be a collection of literature mainly Jewish. If we enquire into the circumstances under which the various Biblical documents were written, we find that they were written at intervals over a space of nearly 1400 years.

The writers wrote in various lands, from Italy in the west to Mesopotamia and possibly Persia in the east. The writers themselves were a diverse number of people, not only separated from each other by hundreds of years and hundreds of miles; but also belonging to the most diverse walks of life.

In their ranks we have kings, herdsmen, soldiers, legislators, fishermen, statesmen, priests and prophets, a tentmaking rabbi and a Gentile physician not to speak of others of whom we know nothing apart from the writings they have left us.

The writings themselves belong to a great variety of literary types. They include history, law, religious poetry, lyric poetry, parable and allegory, biography, personal memoirs and diaries, in addition to the distinctively Biblical types of prophecy and apocalyptic.

Canon of Scripture that these books, being in agreeance with each other, and not contradictory, have created a standard in what is to be considered Holy Scripture.

Reliability of the Bible 1. Eyewitness Testimony 2. The Care of the Scribes

! The Gospels were written at the very most 40 to 60 years after Jesus death.! Paul s Philippian letter was written only 15 25 years after the death of Jesus.

A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. Mark 15:21

Many people believe the Bible has been mishandled and that its original message and content has been changed, lost, and manipulated. But historians tell us that the Bible is actually one of the most, if not the most, reliable and

credible documents from ancient times. One of the reasons it has such credibility as an ancient document is that it has largely remained the same throughout history. The ancient Jews who wrote and copied the Bible cared so much about the content

of each manuscript that you can compare two copies of the same passage, copied five hundred years apart and found in completely different geographic areas, and they are virtually identical.

For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet s own understanding, or from human initiative. 2 Peter 1:16; 20 21

No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God. 2 Peter 1:16; 20 21

It may be stated categorically that no archeological discovery has ever contradicted a biblical reference. Nelson Glueck, renowned Jewish archaeologist

We have a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses shortly after the life of Jesus and during the time of other eyewitnesses.

They record events that took place in the fulfillment of specific prophies by men who claimed their writings were divine instead of human in origin.
