Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition Mambalam resident involved in research on God particle Rajivalochan Subramaniam (resident of 34/31, Kripasankari Street, West Mambalam) considered himself a failure in a US university before rediscovering himself in the field of high energy physics. A Ph.D was once a distant dream for Rajiv. It is the support of his father A. Subramanian, a retired government officer, and mother Latha and his grandparents, that enabled him to pursue his dream in CERN, Geneva. After schooling in Sri Sitaram Vidyalaya (2001) and Shri Ahobila Mutt Oriental School (2003) in West Mambalam, where he grew up on mathematics, he studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering in Bannari Amman Institute of Technology in Sathyamangalam. His finalyear project was funded by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology in 2007. In August 2008, Rajiv joined the Electrical Engineering Master s program in Louisiana Tech University, USA, where he got partial scholarship. In the US, there is an option to design one s master s curriculum, and Rajiv chose a combination of research and academics. A majority of Indian students in the university chose the academics option as most of them are interested in a job. Having made a tough decision, I struggled during my first year of MS, he says. The open book tests were more difficult than the closed book ones and the research work in electrodynamics made no sense to him. After nine months he quit that research, realizing he was not cut out for electrodynamics. This statement of Einstein came to his mind then: Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. One year on American soil ended in the Fall of 2009. All of my educational loan was spent and I was depleted financially and morally. My self-confidence was very low during this time as I considered myself a failure, recalls Rajiv. It was during this hard period that he met his current adviser/professor Dr. Markus Wobisch who is involved in high energy physics. At that time he did not know that his life was going to change. Prof. Wobisch was working with the U.S. Fermi National Lab located in Chicago and Rajiv s electri- cal background was good for high energy physics research. Even for the very minor results that I showed him, he encouraged me to such an extent that I really gained confidence in life. This moral support pushed him to become a successful Ph.D student. Seeing his progress, the department chair, Dr. Lee Sawyer decided to involve him in mankind s biggest collaborative experiment, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). And that is how he started working at the ATLAS detector in the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva, exactly two years before the discovery of the Higgs bosonlike particle. In July 2010, he arrived at CERN. CERN is an underground lab which spans the Franco-Swiss border with a circumference of 27 km. and is 100 meters under the ground. At CERN, students, academicians and scientists do collaborative work for common goals. CERN tries to answer fundamental questions about the universe. The Standard Model is a basic model in modern physics. It lists and classifies all fundamental particles and forces, many of which were discovered at CERN. There were many parallel experiments at CERN and one of the main goals was to search for the Higgs boson. The universe is filled with a field called the Higgs Field and the particles of the field are called Higgs bosons. Assume that a swimming pool is the universe and a HO molecule is equivalent to a Higgs Boson. As you cannot see water molecule in a swimming pool you cannot see the Higgs boson in the Higgs Field. About 48 years ago, Peter Higgs and a few other scientists postulated this theory. The mathematics behind the theory was so wonderful that people started liking it.when most scientists agreed on the idea and were able to convince governments, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment came to life in 1990. The Indian government has spent USD 40 million for the experiment and about 100 Indians have played a substantial role in the experiment. The total budget of the project is $10 billion. It took 20 years of hard work by over 10,000 scientists around the world to build these pyramids of the 21st Century. Along with students from India, other Indians studying in the U.S. and universities around the world also contribute to a great extent. After years of hard work we started taking data in 2010 March. By the end of 2011, there was no success but we got a few hints about the mass of the particle. In 2012 March- June, we started seeing positive results, says Rajiv who personally contributed by selecting the interesting data to be recorded for detailed study, called trigger system in scientific terms. Conservancy operations in all zones to be privatised The Chennai Corporation Council on July 25 approved the proposal for gradual privatisation of conservancy operations in all zones of the city. Conservancy operations in zones such as Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Adyar and parts of Ambattur have already been privatised. As part of the efforts of the Chennai Corporation to shortlist suitable technology for remediation and scientific closure of the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards, the civic body also sought privatisation of conservancy operations in all the 15 zones. The action was initiated a few months ago in the wake of the National Green Tribunal setting aside the environmental clearance granted by the Tamilnadu Government to the integrated solid waste management facility in Perungudi. Apart from the initiative of reversing the environmental damage in Perungudi and Kodungaiyur, the civic body had invited expression of interest for two more solid waste management initiatives from multinational companies. This included the design of a scalable and modular plant with a future capacity of processing 10,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day. The scope of work in privatisation of conservancy operations covers street cleaning and door-to-door collection of garbage. All the three initiatives are proposed to be in the public-private partnership mode. The portions of land identified in Kuthambakkam, Malaiapattu and Minjur are likely to be used for the solid waste management initia- The Tamilnadu Government has sanctioned Rs. 25 crores to upgrade facilities in the cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology department of the Government Children s Hospital in Egmore. The Government has proposed that this be declared a Centre of Excellence, said P. Moorthy, head of the department. The hospital, which is attached to the Institute of Child Health, is the only referral center run by the government for paediatric cardiac ailments. Usually the department sees 100 cases daily. Some children come with complex problems requiring specific investigations, and for this we need stateof-the art facilities, the cardiothoracic surgeon added. He said that of every 1,000 live births, eight children have cardiac diseases. At present, the cardiology department performs one open-heart surgery and two- tives. 31 companies had initially expressed interest in participating in three tenders floated by Chennai Corporation in March and 18 were shortlisted. The private conservancy operators in charge of other zones will be identified after a few weeks. The CMDA and Chennai Corporation have been planning to conduct feasibility studies on the many proposed facilities such as 3 rd Avenue in Anna Nagar East and Vijay Nagar bus terminus in Velachery that are part of the Chennai Comprehensive Transportation Study. However, the lack of co-ordination among the various land-owning departments and the planning agencies has been a stumbling block for the implementation of such projects. NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND Learned friend C. Rajan sent me an email on the value of truth and its pitfalls which we had realised but did not divorce in our profession of law. Nor for us the dour fighting qualities of Goldsmith s old village school master who, though vanquished, could argue still. For us, if we were squashed by the correct interpretation of law and appreciation of facts, we stayed squashed and advised our clients from throwing good money after bad and years of sleepless nights pending the appeals and further appeals right up to the Supreme Court whose decision need not always be right, but the Constitution foolishly says, is final. I sleep well and never see nightmares and, I think, Rajan too does ditto. The heroine in Rajan s story wanted her husband to fetch something from the store to prepare dinner. The hubby hobbled to the nearest store, but the victual was not available there. He was looking around for a drink to quench his thirst when he saw an angelic woman shopping. A little talkathon ended in her apartment and all that should not happen to a married man did happen there. When the fool returned home at 3 a.m. the virago of a wife smelt a new perfume and the truthful man spilled the beans and she nearly brought the roof down. Naturally. I rang up Rajan, and asked for the moral of his e-quote. Be truthful, but not a fool like you for telling your government-client that there was no point for appeal as the judgment against the government was correct. Man, that was the cause of your ouster as Government Pleader and you know that. But, to you, the truth was more precious than a brass sign board which, I hear, was hung at the door at your expense. That makes two of us. Rajan, I am happy to have company. Truth never fails to give us our beauty sleep. We will outlast all those grabbers who wallow in lies to rake in miserable piles of fees. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways intends to be that strict to plug loopholes that lead to issuance of driving licenses without proper theoretical and practical training of the applicant. By addressing the entire driving license system, the Ministry will be cracking the whip on illegal driving schools, corruption prevailing in Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) which issue driving licenses on being bribed, and hope that this measure will stem the increase in fatal road accidents. Worried that as many as 1.42 lakh people died in road accidents in 2011 and drivers were responsible for more than 70% of these fatalities, the Ministry is working to put an end to the issuance of license on pecuniary considerations. There are more than 1,000 RTOs in the country and more than 500 to 2000 persons visit each of these centers daily for a learner s license, and about one crore are issued a licenses annually. Most applicants go for the short cut and pay upto Rs. 2000 to touts to secure a license, the legal fee for which in Delhi is Rs. 360. Thus, such a racket sees at least Rs. 2000 crores changing hands across the country annually. Officials apprehend opposition to their initiative as various bureaucratic levels are also complicit in this. Must score 60% in test to get driving license Accepting the recommendation of a committee which looked into the entire gamut involving the driving license system, the Ministry has decided to issue a notification making it mandatory for those applying for a learner s license to take a computer based objective test to test their knowledge of road sense and signs. To help the rural people with minimal education, booklets will be supplied free of cost when they apply for learner s license and come prepared for the test. Those who fail can repeat the test about a week later, but scoring at least 60% is a must. Norms for the authorized driving schools will be made stricter by accrediting and ranking them on the basis of the number of trainers they have, the number and brands of car they have and the practical and theoretical knowledge they impart to students. The final objective test of driving skills will be electronically recorded by radio frequency identification devices, which will track how the candidate carries out commands issued. The device will then issue a printed performance report. But implementing all these norms will require at least two acres of space, infrastructure and finance and involvement of publicprivate partnerships. The old RTOs have the required space but there isn t any in the heart of metros like Delhi and Mumbai. Report courtesy The Hindu

The humble fountain pens are made of durable metal, while the ink comes in easily recyclable glass bottles, she said. When it was pointed out that even ink pens are now being made with plastic, she replied, The plastic in fountain pens is more durable when compared to gel or ball pens, and can be used for three or four years. Vasundha said that she had attempted to promote fountain pens among her classmates and evoked good response. She said, Thirtythree students in my class have started using only fountain pens during physics period. Moreover, I have also kickstarted a campaign on fountain pens with the children in our apartment in Arumbakkam. According to her, a student, on an average, uses three plastic gel or ball pens every month and if at least one third of this is replaced with fountain pens, it will go a long way in reducing the waste generated by plastic gel or ball pens. Schools can also support this cause by installing ink filling stations in their premises, she suggested. Courtesy The New Indian Express.
