Volume: 4 Issue: 4 August 2017 DBIS Newsletter Special Edition DBIS Independence Day JAI HIND Tryst with Destiny It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity... And to India, our much-loved motherland, the ancient, the eternal and the ever-new, we pay our reverent homage and we bind ourselves afresh to her service. Jawaharlal Nehru, 14th August, 1947 The words of a statesman, on a momentous occasion, weighed heavily on my mind as I watched our children at DBIS, oblivious, immersed, excitedly ushering in the 71 st year of Independence. This being a special year, 75 th anniversary of Quit India, 100 th Anniversary of Champaran Satyagraha and 125 th Anniversary of Ganesh Utsav, we at DBIS began our celebrations with Fr. Crispino being escorted by our school captains to unfurl the tricolor. School Captain Vritee Muni and Assistant School Captain, Theon Langrana then led the audience through myriad performances, to celebrate Independence day. We started with the pledge, solemnly lead by the school council members. Mehek Mehta from grade 8 delivered a fiery speech on the symbolism of colours of our National flag and also dismissed incorrect perceptions on GST. A melodious poem scripted and sung by our dear little nightingale Durga Nanawadekar; her rendition embodied the spirit and commitment to DBIS in unity through diversity and nation building. A gallant Naiesha Ukaji from grade 5, touched our heart with her theme Anekta mein ekta in Hindi. Little Sarthak Jadhav from Grade 4 deserves special praise for speaking in Marathi (his mother tongue), our state language. 1

Continued from page 1 DBIS Independence Day The highlight of the day and pleasantly surprising all of us was a pocket edition of Our Late President, Dr. Abdul Kalam Azad who stepped on the dais, steeped in wisdom. Such was the impact of little Reya Shriram from grade 1, that our 6 2 Director, Fr. Crispino conveyed that he felt small, though he was much bigger in size. Our popular Fr. Crispino found his match in the answers of our quick-witted and confident children of the primary section. The progress and love of our children brought out the poet in him. His message had a rhetorical question on whether we were really free if there was so much poverty, hunger and grief felt by children of a lesser God. It was a heady feeling, watching our young ones in the choir standing there in front of a sizeable crowd, unfazed, confident, a new face of India. A choreographed dance to the lyrics of Rang de Basanti by grade 2 had the audience tapping their feet to the rhythm and beat. Performances in the Bianchi Hall concluded to the notes of Vande Mataram voiced by children from Sr. KG. The function in the hall concluded, however the participation did not end there; it continued in the Rainbow room and the classrooms on the ground floor where our parent community along with our wonderful students expressed their pride on paper- their interpretation on 70 years of Independent India. India was twice blessed this Independence Day, as she celebrated the earthly appearance of Lord Krishna. Celebrating our Independence day on Janmashtami was indeed auspicious. The children of DBIS, welcomed Lord Krishna, on 14 th August 2017, with such unbelievable enthusiasm that we had two Dahihandis, one for the boys and the other for the girls and a separate one for the little angels from the Preprimary section. Gender equality achieved! Our students strode back, exuding confidence in themselves, achievers, each one of them, to usher in another year of Free India. 2

OUR TRICOLOUR "I'll either come back after raising the Indian flag in victory or return wrapped in it, but come back I surely will." These were the last words from the Sher Shah of the Indian Army, Late Captain Vikram Batra. Such is the intensity with which our freedom has been protected. Now it is our turn to preserve and treasure it. As the flag is slowly hoisted into the sky, on this 70 th year of Independence, let us not salute it mechanically, rather let us understand the guidance that springs forth from it, as it unfurls. All these years, the colours of the Indian flag have symbolised - COURAGE, SACRIFICE, PURITY, TRUTH, FAITH, FERTILITY and GROWTH. It s time we reinvented the wheel. As the sun emerges with a new dawn, the hues of saffron are splashed across the skyline. Saffron depicts fresh ideas and hope. We see fresh ideas and hope in the progress we, as a nation, have made. The literacy rate in India has grown from 12% to 74% since 1947. Recently, ISRO launched another satellite and even plan on making one to track ships. One of our proudest achievements is that women have made their mark in an otherwise male dominated world. The hand that rocks the cradle /now rocks the boardroom and sporting arenas. Going green is the only way to ensure that we ourselves do not become extinct. Conservation is what green stands for today. We see green and clean in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Mission, a campaign by the Government of India to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. Its principal aim is to reduce or eliminate open defecation through the construction of toilets in the remotest corners of the country. White calls for transparency and illumination. It is this colour that urges us to move from darkness to light. The GST, the goods and services tax which created such a furore before its implementation this July, is a path breaking indirect tax reform which will create a common national market/ by dismantling inter-state trade barriers In conclusion, I will say that only when the 24 spokes in the wheel become the hands held in unity and cooperation, regardless of caste, colour or creed, will the wheel start turning towards a brighter future. Let our resolve be as strong as the mast and as flexible as the fabric so that even in the strongest of troubled winds, we manage to keep our nation s flag fluttering high, with great pride and patriotic fervour. Jaihind! Jai ho! Importance of our tricolor explained by Ms. Mehek Mehta 5

BE UNIQUE, BE REMEMBERED by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Be unique, Be remembered - these were the words of our former president Dr. Abdul Kalam. He was our 11th president and a very famous scientist. Today, I would like to declamate a small part of his speech - Be unique, be remembered. I have learnt that every youth wants to be unique - and that is YOU!! But the whole world around you is trying its best, day and night, to just make you like everybody else! Now, the question is, do you want to be you or do you want to be like everybody else. To be like everybody else is very convenient, in the first glance, but not satisfying in the long vision. The challenge therefore my young friends, is that you have to fight the hardest battle, that no other human being can ever imagine to fight and don t stop fighting till you have reached your destined place; that is the unique YOU!! To get to the unique you, is a big battle. In this battle you don't need to take a gun. In this battle you need four unique tools 1. Set the goal 2. Acquire knowledge continuously 3. Hard work with dedication 4. Perseverance And with these 4 tools you will definitely be the UNIQUE you! Our Declamation Star Performer Ms. Reya Shriram 9
