NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST September 29 & 30, 2018 AS WE GATHER And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Do you actually look forward to the Last Day? There are many things or events to which we look forward with anticipation. We may even say, I can t wait! for the day of graduation from high school or college; the wedding day; the first day on a new job. Yet we don t say that when anticipating major surgery or the dentist or the loss of a loved one. Today Jesus has us look forward to a reward laid up for us on that day. James chimes in, saying whatever our circumstances, the Christian faith enables us to live with the hope and light of our promised deliverance. PREPARATION HYMN Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise LSB 802 INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 119:73, 77 Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn Your commandments. Let Your mercy come to me, that I may live; for Your law is my delight. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION James 5:16 Beloved, today the apostle James says, Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. Let us all therefore lay our sins on Jesus, looking to Him for forgiveness. Almighty God, at Your invitation, we beg for Your grace and forgiveness of our sins for the sake of the priceless sacrifice of our Lord Jesus on the cross. Forgive us for the wayward and wrongful acts we have committed and also for the good and constructive words and acts we have failed to do. Help us to live in the faith of the resurrection of the righteous. Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen 1

SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Everlasting Father, source of every blessing, mercifully direct and govern us by Your Holy Spirit that we may complete the works You have prepared for us to do; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT READING Numbers 11:4 6, 10 16, 24 29 p. 119 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. EPISTLE James 5:(1 12) 13 20 p. 1013 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HOLY GOSPEL Mark 9:38 50 p. 845 (The Gospel is read.) CHILDREN'S MESSAGE APOSTLES CREED The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 3

HYMN OF THE DAY Love Divine, All Loves Excelling LSB 700 MESSAGE RETURN TITHES & GIFTS TO GOD LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. BENEDICTION Psalm 104:31, 33 34 May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works, I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to Him, for I rejoice in the Lord. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Numbers 6:24 26 HYMN Be Thou My Vision (Slane) Verse 1 Verse 2 Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art- Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my wisdom, be Thou my true Word; 4

I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son, Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Verse 3 Verse 4 Verse 5 Be Thou my shield and my sword for the fight. Be Thou my dignity, be Thou my might; Thou my soul's shelter and Thou my high tow'r. Raise Thou me heav'nward, O pow'r of my pow'r. Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise, Thou mine inheritance, now and always; Thou and Thou only be first in my heart, High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art. High King of heaven, when vict'ry is won, May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
