February 3, 2019 Fourth day in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS JER 1:4-5, 17-19; PS 71:1-6, 15-17; 1 COR 12:31-13:13 or 1 COR 13:4-13; LK 4:21-30 How do I know if the Time, Talent and Treasure I offer God in grateful return is enough? What is the measure? St. Paul tells us in the Second Reading today the measure is the love that we put into each of these aspects of our lives. If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own and hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. God is not after a particular number. What He wants us to give over to Him is our very selves. Real love is not a sentiment. Real love is manifested in living a virtuous life. We read later in St. Paul s letter that real love takes strength: it is patient, kind, humble, othercentered, truth-seeking and long-suffering. Love is the heroic giving of oneself even when it is uncomfortable; especially then. Love looks like Jesus. It lives like Jesus. Sometimes, living like Jesus is difficult. We see this in the Gospel Reading today where we find Jesus in action, preaching in the synagogue in His hometown. He speaks truth to the people He loves, the ones He grew up with and shared His early days with. How do they respond? They are filled with fury and run Him out of town, intent on throwing Him from a cliff! Yet Jesus is undeterred. He passes right through them and presses forward with the mission His Father has entrusted to Him. We are called to live with this same strength and determination, fueled by the power of love and by gratitude for all God has given us. MARIAN HOUSE VOLUNTEER We are looking for an individual to lead the monthly Marian House volunteer effort for St. Gabriel. This is great opportunity to get involved in our parish as well as the local community, serving those in need of a nutritious, warm meal. The position involves sending out a monthly bulletin announcement requesting volunteers, passing along the names to the staff at the Marian House and of course, volunteering your time when possible. If interested, please contact Cyndy Pylkka at 719-964-6575 or ccsp@comcast.net. SECOND ANNUAL OUTREACH COMMITTEE SOCKS AND T-SHIRT COLLECTION FOR MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN January 12-February 10 2019 Please donate new white socks and new and gently used t- shirts for the Marian House to help those in need in our community. Questions: Please contact Barbara Green barbaragreen241@hotmail.com. SCAM ALERT It has come to our attention that there are several email and mail scams going around to our church community. Recently several parishioners have received an email from Fr. Kirk requesting assistance in some way (either by money, I Tunes cards etc). These are scams and we are urging you to delete the email immediately and do not respond to it or open any links in the message. Please be aware that Fr. Kirk will NEVER contact you via email asking for assistance. If you should receive an email from any staff member of St. Gabriel, please make sure to check the ENTIRE email address. We will ALWAYS use the saintgabriel.net email address and it will have our church logo at the end of the message. An additional way to determine if the email is from Fr. Kirk is that he will sign +JMJ+ after his name. Checking email addresses and NOT responding to pleas is a good practice to exercise when reading emails from any source. If you should have any questions, please call the office at 719-528- 8407. HELP WANTED Volunteers are needed to assist with care of the linens used during Mass. This includes pretreating, washing and ironing the linens. Laundry products are provided. Training will be provided as well as detailed written instructions. Scheduling is in increments of 1 week at a time with no minimum number of times per year required. Please contact Beth Kaplan for further information on this volunteer opportunity at 719-459-9878 or rkaplan_5674@msn.com. ALTAR FLOWERS Do you know that the beautiful flowers you see in church every week are all donation based. You can sign up and dedicate flowers in honor of or in memory of loved ones. The sign up book is at the welcome desk. Flowers will be displayed starting Friday before the weekend of your choice and remain in front of the altar for a week. Flower dedications will also be highlighted in the bulletin. The minimum donation for the flowers has been reduced from $50 to $35. If there is not a request for flowers by the Monday before the weekend at 10am,, there will be not be flowers in front of the altar. St. Gabriel the Archangel 2 Colorado Springs, CO

MISSION TRIP APPEAL Hello, I am Rebekah Acosta and I have exciting news! For the past several years, I have been a parishioner at St. Gabriel s. Now, I am currently attending Regis University in Denver, Colorado. As you may know, my older brother Benjamin Acosta is a FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionary, and I have been given the wonderful opportunity of going on a mission trip with him. I, and many other college students, FOCUS missionaries, and priests are going to Rome on a pilgrimage to serve the Lord and help those in need. We will be serving alongside the Missionaries of Charity, with intentions to serve the poorest of the poor. Through this mission trip I hope to grow closer to God and share in His love as I serve His people. You can join me on this mission trip in a couple of ways- with your prayers and with a financial gift. I need to raise $2,750 by 9 February. To meet this goal as quickly as possible, gifts of $50, $100, or $150+ are greatly needed. There are no minimums or maximums and all gifts are immensely appreciated! If you would like to join my mission support team, simply go online and donate by credit card or bank transfer at http://www.focusonline.org/goto/rebekahacosta. Gifts made online and checks made payable to FOCUS are tax-deductible, charitable gifts. Thank you for your prayerful time and consideration! For more information, please call me at 719-229-1213, or email me at rebekahacosta77@gmail.com. St. Gabriel the Archangel 6 Colorado Springs, CO

MONTH OF THE HOLY FAMILY The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family. The special devotion, which proposes the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as the model of virtue of all Christian households, began in the 17th century. The Holy Family models for us what family life should exemplify. It is a school of virtue for both parents and children. There we find God, and learn how to connect with God and with others. The family is where love is freely given without self-interest. It is where we learn to love, to pray and to practice the gift of charity. Pope John Paul II has said, The family, more than any other human reality, is the place in which the person is loved for himself and in which he learns to live the sincere gift of self (Nov. 27, 2002). We should ask ourselves if our own families model that of the Holy Family. We need to be open to God s grace to value the positive and to accept our mistakes and to be willing to rectify them. Parenting is a very challenging responsibility and at times errors are made despite the best intentions. Recognizing this, children should trust their parents and never forget that parents want only what is best for them. Which leads us to what may be the most important family virtue forgiveness. Living so intimately within the family nucleus naturally gives rise to unpleasant situations where someone is apt to be offended. St. Paul knew this when he told us to bear with and forgive one another. The health of our family may depend on how quickly we learn to forgive without harboring feelings of resentment. No family can thrive and grow without constant work. Even the material details that take time and effort are essential to keeping the family strong. Everyone has to pull together for the good of the family even to the point of putting ahead of our own needs and ambitions the happiness of other family members, setting aside our own selfish desires. It is also important to pray as a family, especially the holy rosary. Prayer will help us to intensify our closeness with each other and to learn to forgive.
