Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 27, 2019 Page 2 INCLEMENT WEATHER Last weekend s winter storm Yoshi certainly caused treacherous road conditions, especially on Sunday morning. In the best interest of all, Mass was not celebrated at the Our Lady of Peace campus. Early Sunday morning we posted on WFSB (television and website) the announcement that there would be no Mass celebrated at Our Lady of Peace. (It was listed as Our Lady of Peace Ch-E Hartford.) If another storm like Yoshi should cause such conditions, please check WFSB (television and/or website) to see if Mass will be celebrated. As always, if you feel you cannot safely proceed to Mass, please make the best decision for you and your family. WORLD YOUTH DAY UPDATE Our pilgrims, Ginamarie Garabedian and Maddie Gay, have been enjoying their World Youth Day pilgrimage in Panama, especially the warm weather! The pilgrimage wraps up this Sunday with a Mass celebrated by Pope Francis. It s been a wonderful experience for them meeting other pilgrims from around the world and enjoying all the sites of the beautiful country! You can see what they ve been doing by visiting their blog at: www.stedmundcampionct.wix.com/wyd2019 There is also a contact section at this address if you wish to send them a note via e-mail. Please pray for their safe travel home, and know that they are praying for their parish family as well. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 27, 2019 Page 3 MASS OF REPARATION In seeking to apply spiritual remedies to the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church and the tragedy it has caused so many victims, Archbishop Leonard P. Blair will be celebrating the first of three Masses of Reparation on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Bartholomew Church in Manchester. Mass will be accompanied by an hour of Eucharistic Adoration and the recitation of the Rosary. Archbishop Blair s invitation states, I invite everyone to participate in the Mass of Reparation that will be offered because the Body of Christ is suffering, and the prayers of all God s people are vital. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS St. Christopher Council #4 Did you know... You can now join the Order on-line at: www.kofc.org Seminarians, Priests, full-time military and college students can join for free and are exempt from council dues. The Knights are looking for Catholic men who want to make a difference in their community. Please contact the Grand Knight, Ernest Mintel, at 860-569-7593 for more information. THE SIGN OF PEACE With the cold and flu season underway, each of us has the responsibility of taking precautions to prevent the spread of these illnesses. We need to wash our hands frequently, take care where we cough and sneeze, and scrutinize our habits and procedures where the spread of infection seems most possible. During the celebration of Mass when we are asked to offer the sign of peace, please do not be offended if someone chooses not to shake hands with you during the sign of peace. An appropriate gesture for those who are concerned about spreading the flu virus might be to strive for eye contact rather than physical contact. You could give a wave of your hand or clasp your hands together and bow gently to those around you, and with a smile say Peace be with you. SOCIAL CLUB DAY TRIP The Saint Edmund Campion Social Club is sponsoring a day trip to see Andy Cooney s Irish Cabaret at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. Flyers have been placed at the church entrances. Reservations are on a first come-first served basis, so please make your reservation early. For more information, please contact Joan Perrone at 860-568-6229. PARISHIONER IN NEED BAKE SALE February 9 and 10 Parishioners in Need (PIN) Committee will host their 10th Anniversary Bake Sale the weekend of February 9 and 10. We celebrate ten years of operation. Since our inception, we have assisted and continue to assist many members within our parish as well as having provided resources to others within the community. Your support has helped us succeed. Please continue to watch out for those in our parish who may need assistance and may be hesitant to ask for help. Even those we have helped in the past may still be struggling and we ask that they or someone on their behalf come forward if necessary. Let s be aware of those who need care. The Bake Sale will be held after all Masses celebrated at the Saint Christopher campus the weekend of February 9 and 10 to pick up a baked good item. Donations of baked goods are very much welcomed and needed. (Please indicate if there are nuts in the ingredients.) Thank you all for your continued support! BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Our parish school is most grateful for the number of Box Tops for Education coupons we receive each week from our parishioners! Clipped coupons can be placed in the offertory basket on any weekend. If you have any hanging around right now, please turn them in ASAP. Box Tops are submitted twice a year - March 1 and November 1. Thank you for supporting Saint Christopher School in this way. These 10 cent coupons can add up quickly! CHURCH A church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints. Pauline Phillips

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 27, 2019 Page 4 TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today s Gospel, it will be a year acceptable to the Lord. And Jesus surely didn t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the arrival of God s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, Today is holy... do not be sad, and do not weep. The year acceptable to the Lord is this year. The day that is holy is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God s word. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. LECTIO DIVINA & DAILY READINGS Sunday Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday The Presentation of the Lord Sunday Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Nehemiah 8: 2-4a, 5-6, 8-10 Hebrews 9: 15, 24-28 1-10 11-18 19-25 32-39 Malachi 3: 1-4 Jeremiah 1: 4-5, 17-19 Psalm 19: 8-10, 15 Psalm 98: 1-6 Psalm 40: 2, 4ab, 7-8a, 10, 11 Psalm 110: 1-4 Psalm 24: 1-6 Psalm 37: 3-6, 23-24, 39-40 Psalm 24: 7-10 Psalm 71: 1-6, 15, 17 1 Corinthians 12: 12-30 Hebrews 2: 14-18 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21 Mark 3: 22-30 Mark 3: 31-35 Mark 4: 1-20 Mark 4: 21-25 Mark 4: 26-34 Luke 2: 22-40 Luke 4: 21-30 What is Lectio Divina? While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend-not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer: Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God: Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing: Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/ or you can use the Reflection Question found below. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer: At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection for Next Sunday, February 3 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In these readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are called to this same perseverance in the name of love.
