Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod 2001 Jackson Street Pastor Luke John Willitz Mosinee, WI 54455 (321) 465-2077 (715) 693-2910 ilcmosinee@gmail.com www.ilcmosinee.com First Sunday in Lent February 18 th, 2018 Order of Service The Common Service (p. 15) Opening Hymn #106: Come to Calvary s Holy Mountain (The congregation may rise for the final verse of the hymn.) M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Confession of Sins M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. Kyrie

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Prayer and Praise M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord: Prayer of the Day M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Let us pray. Lord our strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our ancient foe tempts us with his deceits and empty promises. Keep us steadfast in your Word, and when we fall, raise us up again and restore us through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. The Word Psalm 6 (p. 66) Epistle Lesson Romans 8:31-39 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died more than that, who was raised who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Confessional Reading The Augsburg Confession The Augsburg Confession, presented to the secular government on June 25, 1530, is the first great statement-of-faith of the Lutherans against the errors of the Medieval Church. It was written by Philip Melanchthon, Luther s friend and fellow professor at Wittenberg. Where does evil come from? Here Melanchthon answers the question by pointing to the devil who, since the fall into sin, has now infected the whole world with his sinful nature. Augsburg Confession, Article XIX: The Cause of Sin It is taught among us that although almighty God has created and still preserves nature, yet sin is caused in all wicked men and despisers of God by the perverted will. This is the will of the devil and of all ungodly men; as soon as God withdraws his support, the will turns away from God to evil. It is as Christ says in John 8:44, When the devil lies, he speaks according to his own nature.

Gospel Lesson Mark 1:12-15 12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him. 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel. Apostles Creed C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Hymn of the Day #371: Oh, Love, How Deep Sermon: Where is the lamb? Old Testament Lesson Genesis 22:1-18 1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. 2 He said, Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to

you. 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, My father! And he said, Here I am, my son. He said, Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 Abraham said, God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son. So they went both of them together. 9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. 12 He said, Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, The LORD will provide ; as it is said to this day, On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided. 15 And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice. Offertory

Offering If you are a guest visiting us this morning, please do not feel obligated to give an offering. We understand that you may want to know more about our ministry before supporting it with your gifts. If, however, you desire to give, you are welcome to do so. During the gathering of the offering, please sign the friendship register located in your pew. Prayer of the Church Lord s Prayer C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Sacrament M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up unto the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is good and right so to do. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who brought the gift of salvation to all people by his death on the tree of the cross, so that the devil,

who overcame us by a tree, would in turn by a tree be overcome. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: Sanctus Words of Institution M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. M: The Peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen.

Agnus Dei Distribution At the direction of the ushers, the communicant members of our fellowship may come forward. If you are not yet a member of our fellowship or if you are unsure what this means, please speak with Pastor Willitz after the service. We would like to give you more information about our church before asking you to commune with us. Thank you for respecting our teaching and practice. Distribution Hymn If God Himself Be for Me 1.) If God himself be for me, I may a host defy; For when I pray, before me My foes, confounded, fly. If Christ, my head and master, Be-friend me from above, What foe or what disaster Can drive me from his love? 2.) This I believe, yea rather, Of this I make my boast, That God is my dear Father, My friend who loves me most, And that, whate'er betide me, My Savior is at hand Through stormy seas to guide me And bring me safe to land.

3.) I build on this foundation: That Jesus and his blood A-lone are my salvation, My true, eternal good. With-out him all that pleases Is valueless on earth; The gifts I have from Jesus Alone have priceless worth. 4.) My Jesus is my splendor, My soul's bright beaming sun; Were he not my defender, Before God's awful throne, I never should find favor And mercy in his sight, But be destroyed forever, As darkness by the light. 5.) He canceled my offenses, Delivered me from death; He is the Lord who cleanses My soul from sin through faith. In him I can be cheerful, Courageous on my way; In him I am not fearful Of God's great Judgment Day 6.) No sin can now condemn me Or set my hope aside. Now hell no more can claim me; Its fury I deride. No sentence now reproves me; No guilt destroys my peace, For Christ, my Savior, loves me And shields me with his grace. 7.) His Holy Spirit dwelleth Within my willing heart, Tames it when it rebelleth, And soothes the keenest smart. He crowns his work with blessing, And he helps me to cry My Father! without ceasing, To him who dwells on high. 8.) And when my soul is lying Weak, trembling, and oppressed, He pleads with groans and sighing That cannot be expressed; But God's quick eye discerns them Although they give no sound, And into language turns them, E'en in the heart's deep ground. 9.) To mine his Spirit speaketh Sweet words of holy cheer, How God, to him that seeketh For rest, is always near, And how he has erected A city fair and new, Where what our faith expected We evermore shall view. 10.) In yonder home does flourish My heritage, my lot; Though here I die and perish, My heav'n shall fail me not. Though care my life oft saddens And causes tears to flow, The light of Jesus gladdens And sweetens ev'ry woe. 11.) Who clings with resolution To him whom Satan hates Must look for persecution Which never here abates; Reproaches, griefs, and losses Rain fast upon his head, A thousand plagues and crosses Become his daily bread.

12.) All this I am prepared for, Yet I am not afraid; By you shall all be cared for, To whom my vows were paid. Though life and limb it cost me, And all the earthly store Which once so much engrossed me, I love you all the more. 13.) No danger, thirst, or hunger, No pain or poverty, No earthly tyrant's anger Shall ever vanquish me. Though earth should break asunder, You are my Savior true; No fire or sword or thunder Shall sever me from you. 14.) No angel, and no gladness, No throne, no pomp, nor show, No love, no hate, no sadness, No pain, no depth of woe, No scheme of man's contrivance, Though it be great or small, Shall draw me from your guidance, Not one of these, nor all! 15.) My heart for joy is springing And can no more be sad, Tis full of joy and singing, Sees only sunshine glad. The sun that cheers my spirit Is Jesus Christ, my King; The heav n I shall inherit Makes me rejoice and sing. Thanksgiving Nunc Dimittis M: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. C: And his mercy endures forever. M: O God the Father, source of all goodness, in your loving kindness you sent your Son to share our humanity. We thank you

that through him you have given us pardon and peace in this sacrament. We also pray that you will not forsake us but will rule our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit so that we willingly serve you day after day, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Benediction M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen.
