Devotion NT340 CHILDREN S DEVOTIONS FOR THE WEEK OF: LESSON TITLE: A Soldier, a Farmer & a Servant THEME: Jesus wants us to be His disciple. SCRIPTURE: 2 Timothy 2:1-26

Dear Parents Welcome to Bible Time for Kids! This is a series of daily devotions for children and their families. Our purpose is to supplement our Sunday morning curriculum and give you an opportunity to encourage your children to develop a daily devotional life. We hope you and your family will be blessed as you study God's Word together. This week we learned about A Soldier, a Farmer and a Servant. The theme was Jesus wants us to be His disciple. A disciple is someone who is a follower of Jesus. In our lesson we saw several pictures that Paul used to explain to Timothy what it means to be a disciple. Are you a disciple of Jesus? This week in our devotion time we will look closer at what it means to be a disciple. If we have a relationship with Jesus then we should all be growing as His disciples. He has a plan for our life, let s find out what it is and then commit to serve Him with all of our hearts. The section of scripture that we studied was 2 Timothy 2:1-26. The following five devotions are based on either the scripture and/or the theme for Sunday s lesson. As a starting point it would be good for you to review these verses with your children. These devotions are designed to help you reinforce Sunday s lesson throughout the week with your children, provide some more ideas for the application of God s Word in your children s lives and provide a tool to help in family devotions. Obviously children at various age levels will respond to the devotional in different ways. You may want to add your own ideas to these to make them more age appropriate. May the Lord bless you as you study His Word together!

Day One Anywhere! Anytime! Anything! Text: John 12:26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. Also Read Romans 12:1 Jonah sat in his room one evening thinking of a gift he could give to God. Jonah was so thankful for the gift of salvation through Jesus that God had given to him that he wanted to give something back to God. What could I give him? Jonah thought to himself. How about my Sony Play Station? Na, God probably has one. How about my Joe Montana football? Na, God probably has one of those too. He thought to himself for a moment and then shouted out loud, I know! I know! I can give God myself! Jonah knelt down by his bed and began to pray, God, I ll go anywhere in the world You want me to go to tell others about you, even if it means I have to go and visit Molly who lives down the street. I ll go anytime that You want me to go, Lord, even if it s in the middle of my favorite T.V. show. I ll do both hard things and easy things anything for You, Lord. Help me to be a servant of Yours. I love You. In Jesus name, Amen. Jonah didn t want to hold anything back. He wanted to give his all to the Lord. That was the only gift that made sense. God owns everything. He doesn t need money, a Sony Play Station, or a Joe Montana football. All he wants is for you to serve Him anywhere, anytime, and in anything. Jesus wants us to be His disciple and being a disciple is a willingness to serve Him. Do you want to be His disciple? Why? What gift can you give to God? (Romans 12:1) Are you willing to go anywhere, at anytime, for anything? Kid's Bible Dictionary Consecration: Giving yourself and all that you have to the Lord, nothing held back, for Him to use however He chooses.

Day Two Preparing for Battle (Part 1) Text: Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Also Read 2 Timothy 2:3-4 The alarm sounded at the fire station. The dispatcher s voice could be heard over the intercom. Engine 51 respond to a reported house fire with people trapped. The crew from station 51 jumped out of bed and started putting on their protective gear. First they put on bunkers, which protected their feet and legs. Then the firefighters put on a protective hood that covered their face, head, and neck. After the hood, they put on their jacket, which covered their chest, back, arms, and stomach. Now it was time to slide down the pole. Once they got to the fire engine they put on their gloves and helmet and buckle themselves into the fire engine. The fire engine sped off to the fire. En route, the firefighters put on their breathing apparatus and mask. They were now prepared to battle the fire and smoke when they arrived at the house fire. It is very important to be protected as a firefighter. The smoke and the fire can damage a firefighter very badly if he or she does not have on the proper protection. Sometimes the firefighter has to battle against fire every time he or she works. It is impossible to enter a fire without any protective clothing on. The fire is just too hot and the smoke is too dark and thick, which makes it impossible to breath, so a firefighter is unable to fight fire without his equipment. Did you know as a follower of Jesus Christ there is a constant battle that is fought? Ephesians 6:12 says, For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Our battle is not against human beings. It is against spiritual powers. Satan is trying to distract our attention away from the Lord by his crafty ways. Continued on Day Three Kid's Bible Dictionary Spiritual Warfare: A battle taking place in the heavenly realm between our enemy, the devil and believers in Jesus.

Day Three Preparing for Battle (Part 2) Text: Ephesians 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Also Read 2 Timothy 2:3-4 Continued from Day Two Satan does not want us to get closer to the Lord. Satan wants to distract us from doing God s work. So we are told to put on special armor in order to prepare us for spiritual battle. Just like a firefighter is to put on his boots, pants, and jacket for protection. We need to put on the armor of God daily in order to be protected from Satan s craftiness. The writer of Ephesians says we are to gird our waist with truth (Ephesians 6:14a). How can we do that? First, we put on the belt of truth by learning as much as we can of the Bible s truths. How can we do that? We learn God s truths by going to church, kid s club, Sunday school, memorizing scripture, and having a quiet time with God. If you are learning God s Word and putting on the belt of truth every morning, then you will be ready to face Satan and be protected. Another way to put on the belt of truth is to be sure that we are always truthful in everything we say and do. Satan is the father of lies and he is happy when you tell even the smallest of lies. Jesus said, I am the truth. Jesus truth is the only protection against the lies of Satan. Stand having put on the breastplate of righteousness. (Ephesians 6:14) The firefighter s jacket is worn to protect his chest from injury. The most important organ in his chest is his heart. As Christians, you and I need protection for our hearts. That protection comes from righteousness. From the moment we are saved, God the Father accepts us as one of His children. When He looks at our heart, He sees the righteousness of His Son, Jesus (Ephesians 1:6). When Satan tries to make us think that God rejects us, we can resist him by remembering that God accepts us even when we fail because we have Christ s righteousness. We can also wear the breastplate of righteousness by living our lives as rightly as we know how. Choosing to tell the truth instead of lying, choosing to obey instead of disobeying, choosing to be kind instead of being mean. God gives us the power to choose what s right. That s righteous living! Continued on Day Four Kid's Bible Dictionary Armor of God: The protective covering that God gives us to protect us from the devil. Like the armor that a soldier has in battle.

Day Four Preparing for Battle (Part 3) Text: Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. Also Read 1 John 5:4 Continued from Day Three And having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. (Ephesians 6:15) The firefighters boots help keep their feet in good condition by protecting them from the fire. God says our feet should be covered with the gospel of peace. Who is our peace? He (Jesus) is our peace (Ephesians 2:14). As we walk through life with the shoes of peace we show God s love to those who do not know Him (Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 5:20). Next we need the shield of faith. Above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench the fiery darts of the wicked one (Ephesians 6:16). When a firefighter enters into a fiery building he must take a fire hose with him. The fire hose shields him from the heat and puts out the fire because of the water that is discharged from it. As Christians, we need to have a shield of faith so we are able to put out the fiery darts of Satan. Some of the fiery darts that Satan shoots are lies, hateful thoughts about people or the desire to sin. We need to hold our shields of faith high by trusting the truths we know about God, even when things seem to be going wrong. Faith is acting on what we believe, even when we have doubts. And take the helmet of Salvation (Ephesians 6:17a). Firefighters need to have helmets on for one reason only to protect their heads. If your head gets hit, your brain gets hurt and you lose the battle. Satan wants to attack our minds. He wants to fill our minds with evil things to distract us from the wonderful things of God. We need to let God control our minds so Satan can t lead us astray. That means we have to be careful what enters our mind. What kind of television programs do we watch? We must be careful about what type of music we hear, what kind of books we read, what we think about, or what type of conversation enters our mind. Perfect peace is found when our thoughts are on Jesus Christ. Continued on Day Five Kid's Bible Dictionary Satan: An angel created by God who was lifted up in pride and rebelled against God. Although defeated by Jesus death on the cross, he still wages a battle against the kingdom of God and His people.

Day Five Fighting Back Text: Ephesians 6:17b Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Also Read Hebrews 4:12 Continued from Day Four Now we are completely dressed with our armor on. We are ready for battle. But we need one more thing in order to fight back - The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. God s Word needs to be used everyday in our life for us to prevail against Satan. We need to learn Bible verses so the Holy Spirit can bring them to our memory when we are tempted to do something wrong. God s Word will defend us from an attack by Satan. As a disciple or follower of Jesus we need to be prepared to go into battle. The armor of God is something we must put on every single day of our life. Going out into this world unprotected allows Satan to shoot his crafty evil darts in our direction, which can cause us to do wrong. God wants us to be his disciples. There is one more thing that will help us be effective against Satan Prayer! A good soldier is always in contact with his commander. He doesn t act on his own. As good soldiers in God s army, we need to be in constant communication with Him. We need His direction and guidance in our every step. Prayer should be our first response to any type of difficulty or situation in our life. It should be the most natural thing to us as Christians. God wants us to acknowledge Him in all things! Not just the things we want to acknowledge Him about but in everything in our lives. He is the greatest listener there is. When we follow Him we need to stay in constant communication with Him or we might get lost. He desires for us to be His disciples. Remember what the armor of God looks like, feels like, and how to put it on. It is needed everyday to be His disciple. Satan is waiting and watching our every move. He wants to attack us so we our powerless. But when we are in God s Word and wear His armor, Satan is defeated. Kid's Prayer Time Pray that God will help you to understand what it means to be His disciple and that He will help you to put on His armor every day to protect you from the schemes of the enemy.
