Ms. Amelia Gallagher amelia.gallagher@olomchurch.com (225) 926-1883 Abbey Youth Fest Sunday, March 1 9:00 am - 9:00 pm St. Joseph Abbey - Covington, LA The Abbey Youth Festival is an apostolic service of Saint Joseph Abbey and Seminary College. It is designed to provide young people with an opportunity to experience a day of prayer and faith formation with an exposure to the Benedictine tradition. Its focus is evangelization and vocational discernment by means of Liturgy, prayer, worship, music and education appropriate for Catholic young people. Ms. Amelia Gallagher amelia.gallagher@olomchurch.com (225) 926-1883 Steubenville South June 26-28 Alexandria Riverfront Center - Alexandria, LA Steubenville Conferences, an outreach of Franciscan University of Steubenville, have served hundreds of thousands of Catholics across North America since 1975. In the spirit of St. Francis, our mission is Go, Rebuild My Church. Steubenville Conferences invite youth, young adults and adults into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ, empower them for discipleship, and equip them for the work of the New Evangelization. Each summer, tens of thousands accept this invitation to grow in their Catholic faith through inspiring talks, dynamic worship and profound encounters with Christ in the Eucharist and Reconciliation. Ms. Amelia Gallagher amelia.gallagher@olomchurch.com (225) 926-1883 SPECIAL GIFTS FOR THE LITURGY The sacred liturgy and the celebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice of the Holy Mass is the Source and Summit of our parish life. Our Liturgy & Sacred Music Team has been working very hard this year in consultation with our priests to continue our parish s tradition of excellence in worship befitting the Lord s Day. We have returned our altar servers and the members of our children s chorus to their customary garb of red cassock and white surplice. The parish has experimented with white albs for servers for some time, and we re now at a place and time where the traditional vesture is again greatly appreciated. These pieces present a great opportunity for memorial gifts at the service of the celebration of Mass. Each piece is $100. To give a gift for the altar server cassock & surplice please contact Ms. Deanie Smith. Gifts can be paid for by check or credit card. Please contact Ms. Deanie Smith, (225) 928-6207 to participate. SAINT OF THE WEEK St. Polycarp FEAST DAY: February 23 Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna (modern Izmir, Turkey), disciple of St. John the Apostle and friend of St. Ignatius of Antioch was a revered Christian leader during the first half of the second century. St. Ignatius, on his way to Rome to be martyred, visited Polycarp at Smyrna, and later at Troas wrote him a personal letter. The Asia Minor Churches recognized Polycarp s leadership by choosing him as a representative to discuss with Pope Anicetus the date of the Easter celebration in Rome a major controversy in the early Church. Only one of the many letters written by Polycarp has been preserved, the one he wrote to the Church of Philippi in Macedonia. At the age of 86, Polycarp was recorded as saying on the day of his death, Eighty and six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong. Polycarp goes on to say, How then can I blaspheme my King and Savior? Bring forth what thou wilt. Polycarp was burned at the stake for refusing to burn incense to the Roman Emperor. The flames did not harm him so he was finally killed by a dagger. Polycarp occupies an important place in the history of the early Christian Church. He is among the earliest Christians whose writings survive. Saint Jerome wrote that Polycarp was a disciple of the apostle John and by him ordained bishop of Smyrna. He was an elder of an important congregation which was a large contributor to the founding of the Christian Church. He is from an era whose orthodoxy is widely accepted by Eastern Orthodox Churches, Oriental Orthodox Churches, Church of God groups, Sabbatarian groups, mainstream Protestants and Catholics alike. 8 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH
