The word Advent means approach or coming. But what is it really? It is the beginning of the new liturgical year for the Roman Catholic Church. On this first Sunday of Advent, the Church celebrates its own kind of New Year s. It begins on the Sunday closest to November 30, which is the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle. Sometimes people mistakenly think that Advent is part of the Christmas celebration. But actually, Advent is a time of preparation all its own. Christmas doesn t actually begin until the first Mass is celebrated on Christmas Eve and then we enter the beautiful season of Christmas or Christmastide. Advent is given to us as a time to prepare our souls for the coming of the Lord. We are called to keep watch and to leave behind our sinful ways. The season is very similar to Lent, so its nickname is the Little Lent. You will notice that we no longer sing the song of the angels, the Gloria. We will wait to sing this song anew with the angels on Christmas Day, as they did over a thousand years ago. First Sunday of Advent In our current culture, we are tempted to skip over the penitential aspects of Advent and focus on the joys of Christmas. This is a great tragedy. Focusing on the joy alone denies a crucially important truth: that the Christ Child is our Lord and Savior, who will suffer and die for our salvation. Parish Penance Service Monday, December 3 at 7:00 PM Parish Christmas Party Friday, December 7 at 6:00 PM Holy Day Mass: Immaculate Conception Friday, December 7 Vigil Masses at the Catholic Center 5:30 PM, 7:30 PM (Spanish) Saturday, December 8 at St. Joseph, 8:30 AM, 12:00 PM-Bilingual
