Anyone who is seriously ill or over 65 and ailing is invited to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. When a family member is hospitalized, please notify the rectory so that hospital visits can be made. PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ At our Masses last weekend I spoke about the impending closing of the Archdiocese of Chicago s college seminary, St. Joseph Seminary (located at Loyola University s Lake Shore campus). I just wanted to reiterate it briefly here for those who have not heard about this. The number of seminarians a ending St. Joseph has con nually decreased over the last several years (the seminary was down to 20 total students this year, 13 of them studying for the Chicago Archdiocese). Obviously, the seminary cannot con nue to sustain itself with an enrollment that low. And just as it is sad whenever a Catholic grade school or high school closes, so it is also sad when a seminary closes, because it affects us all. Fewer seminarians means fewer priests, which means that in the coming years, more and more parishes will have one priest, or even end up sharing one priest with another parish. Thus, I hope and pray that this closing will energize more Catholics to pray and work for more voca ons to the priesthood and religious life. And when I say work, I simply mean: when was the last me, if ever, that you asked a young man in your life if he has ever considered the priesthood? Just asking that one ques on can have more of an impact than you might think. The closing of St. Joseph also affects us directly here at St. Beatrice. The two priests whom I usually call upon when I need weekend Mass help are Fr. Bob Flack and Fr. Dan Flens and both of them work at St. Joseph Seminary. They do not know yet what their next assignments will be a er the seminary closes at the end of this school year. Fr. Bob is a Jesuit priest, so there is a possibility that he might remain at Loyola University and minister in another capacity. Fr. Dan, however, is a diocesan priest, like me. This means that there is a real possibility that he may be assigned to a parish (because there is such a need for parish priests), in which case he would not be able to help here anymore on the weekends. So, if I lose both of my weekend helpers well, I m trying not to think about that! Please pray that we will be able to find more weekend help when the me comes. Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today s Gospel, it will be a year acceptable to the Lord. And Jesus surely didn t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the arrival of God s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, Today is holy... do not be sad, and do not weep. The year acceptable to the Lord is this year. The day that is holy is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God s word. Copyright J. What We re Learning 3 rd Grade Jesus is our heavenly brother. He was born on Christmas day to Mary and Joseph. He was born in a stable and placed in a manger. 4 th Grade We learned about the Christmas Season and the Epiphany. We learned that the Magi s names are traditionally Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. We learned that the Bible does not give an exact number of Magi but that we get the number three from the gifts that were given. We learned the meaning of the gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. We spent time learning about the Hail Mary and its Biblical roots. 5 th Grade God provides us all with talents that we have in us and develop as we live. He also gives us times in our lives that we use to develop skills to help us use those talents. God calls us to a life of mission and service. There are priests, members of a religious community, married people, single people, young and old, all with their own gifts doing God s will.
