Kol Tikvah Fall 2018 Edion Rabbi s Message -Rabbi Michal Shekel The Tishrei holidays may be over but there is much to look forward to at Har Tikvah over the next few months. In addion to our regular s, Tikvah Tots and holiday acvies, there are three programs I d like to bring to your aenon. I m most excited about our very first event- an intergenera- onal Challah Bake! There s more than one way to braid a challah. Not only will we try different ways to make challah, we ll also look at the history of challah from its origin to the 21st century. We ll even try to idenfy the holidays based on some of the most creave challot you ve ever seen. Best of all, you get your own handmade challah for Shabbat. This event is for everyone from babies to bubbies. Join us on Sunday, November 18 at 10:30 AM. Ask the Rabbi (March 23) - You know those quesons you always meant to ask but the me never seemed right? Now s the me to do it. Anything, with the remotest Jewish connec- on will be on the agenda. We ll schmooze, and kibbitz, and of course, we ll nosh. Film Night (May 25) You bring the snacks, I ll bring the film. There are so many great Jewish films around that it is tough to choose one. I ve got a few different ones in mind so details about this will be in a future noce. This year we re also partnering with PJ Library which provides Jewish books to youngsters throughout the GTA. PJ Library will be publicizing some of our events through their Peel Region mailing list. The Challah Bake will be the first such event, and we will also extend invitaons to our Tikvah Tot Shabbat acvies. You can help by geng the word out to Jewish families with young children about our family and tot events. Invite your Jewish friends and acquaintances to our services and adult events. You know what a great community we have. Let s share it with others. Lastly, a gentle reminder to send in your membership forms to ARZA-Canada (www.arzacanada.org). ARZA-Canada is our link to Israel, supporng Reform programs such as a network of kindergartens, and partnering with other groups to further liberal Jewish causes including recognion of conversions outside the auspices of the Chief Rabbinate. with the intenon of starng the year by performing this mitzvah. In case you have misplaced the pamphlet, or if you want to sign up right now while you remember, here is the link to register on-line: www.arzacanada.org/index.cfm?pagepath=support_us/ Membership&id=54658 Brampton may be a long way from Jerusalem but your support strengthens our voice and es with Israel. President s Message -Randy Kerman, President Hello Har Tikvah. It has been a roller coaster of a summer with the work being done at our new Har Tikvah home. As most of you have aended recent acvies (see some of the pictures in the newsleer), you have seen the transion to a working locaon. We are only a few details away from being completely finished (mainly the accordion door to separate the two main rooms), it is starng to become a home. So now we re here, what do we do next? We have the facili- es that can accommodate a variety of acvies (see Rabbi s secon). We need to think outside the box and make good use of our new home. The Board is open to hearing what you want to use the rooms for! Speaking of the Board, elecon me will soon be upon us and I ask that if you are interested in a posion that you speak up before you are given one. All humour aside, we are always interested in those who would like to serve in any capacity. To all the people who have thanked me for the work on our new locaon, you re welcome, but as I have said before it was not all me. There s a long list of people who have been involved from minor things to major overseeing of work, is countless. I would almost have to list the whole congregaon in some form or another. This speaks volumes as we are a small community, and everyone has had some part in making this a reality. So, the thanks go out to one and all, without you it could not have happened. Many of you took the ARZA-Canada pamphlets on Yom Kippur

We moved into our new home on September 1st weekend and have been working non-stop to get organized moving countless boxes and furniture. This home is much larger than our previous one and we once again have a dining room and eat in kitchen and 2 car garage. Also, our master bedroom is much larger with a full ensuite bathroom. We even got a hot tub out of the deal, something we have wanted for many years. Aer the fun and excitement I had being the Rabbi in the Globe Producon of Fiddler On The Roof, I decided to audion for this year s show, Beauty and the Beast. To my surprise, I was invited to be the Baker as part of the ensemble. So far, loads of work and fun. It should be a great show for the whole family. Tickets are now on sale for late November and early December shows. You can buy on line at Globe Producons Georgetown or the John Ellio Theatre in Georgetown. Hope you can bring your families! Newsleer Editor s Note -Ron Brejak, Editor Hi. You may have noced that this edion of Kol Tokvah has a new look. There are a few reasons for this. First, it seemed fing that now that we have a new shul and a new Hark Tikvah logo, that the newsleer should also should have a new look. Addionally, when I took over doing the newsleer, my first edion was in September 2008 - exactly 10 years ago this month. At that me I also changed the look of the newsleer and it s been that way for the last 10 years, so it s me for a make-over. This new look is more modern and cleaner looking. Also, this format is easier to work with. I hope you like it. Earlier this year we started using an online email service called MailChimp to send out emails to the congregaon. I use Mail- Chimp when I send out email noces asking for submissions for the newsleer. If you hit Reply and reply directly back to my email, your reply email will go to MailChimp. However, I do not have access to incoming Har Tikvah mail in MailChimp - only the President does. Therefore, as I instructed in my emails asking for submissions (in very big, bold, and highlighted text), you need to send your emails for the newsleer to my personal email address: ron_brejak@hotmail.com. Thank you. Cemetery -Bee-Ann Goldstein, Cemetery Chairperson HAVE YOU PURCHASED INTERMENT RIGHTS AT PARDES SHALOM CEMETERY? Prior to 2012, Toronto Hebrew Memorial Parks was not required to have contracts with individual plot holders. As a result, when members of Har Tikvah purchased plots, they received documentaon from Sally Ann Kerman, our cemetery chairperson. Since taking over from Sally Ann, I have inquired about the possibility of geng documentaon from THM, but they haven t responded posively to my inquiries. They thanked me for the updated list of plot holders that I sent them, but haven t offered to provide interment rights cerficates for us. So, if you need documentaon of your burial plots at Pardes Shalom for your files, I am offering to create a template including the date the plot was assigned, the locaon of the plot, the name of the intended occupant, and signed both by myself and our current president. Please let me know if you need this, and feel free to suggest any other informaon I should include in the document. begold2@gmail.com
