Union Seminary by Harold W. Friedell, published 1957 SEARCH ME, O GOD (Hymn #460) (VERSE 1) Search me, O God, and know my heart today; try me, O Savior, know my thoughts, I pray. See if there be some wicked way in me; cleanse me from every sin and set me free. (VERSE 2) I praise thee, Lord, for cleansing me from sin; fulfill thy Word and make me pure within. Fill me with fire where once I burned with shame; grant my desire to magnify thy name. (VERSE 3) Lord, take my life and make it wholly thine; fill my poor heart with thy great love divine. Take all my will, my passion, self, and pride; I now surrender, Lord in me abide. (VERSE 4) O Holy Spirit, revival comes from thee; send a revival start the work in me. Thy Word declares thou wilt supply our need; for blessings now, O Lord, I humbly plead. Call to Confession We cannot come before God unless we are first honest with ourselves Dawn Troxel
about who we are, about the mistakes we make, and about how well or poorly we care for others. In this spirit, let us offer our prayers to God. Prayer of Confession Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving-kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Do not cast us from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. based on Psalm 51:10-12 [Silent Prayer] Declaration of Forgiveness Hear these comforting words: If you repent and believe in God s redeeming mercy, your sins are forgiven. Trust in God s promises and begin anew your life with God and all people in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. *SONG OF WORSHIP: Reprinted by permission from The Worship Sourcebook, 2004, Faith Alive Christian Resources I THEN SHALL LIVE (Hymn #507) (VERSE 1)
I then shall live as one who s been forgiven; I ll walk with joy to know my debts are paid. I know my name is clear before my Father; I am his child, and I am not afraid. So greatly pardoned, I ll forgive another; the law of love I gladly will obey. (VERSE 2) I then shall live as one who s learned compassion; I ve been so loved that I ll risk loving too. I know how fear builds walls instead of bridges; I dare to see another s point of view. And when relationships demand commitment, then I ll be there to care and follow through. (VERSE 3) Your kingdom come around and through and in me, your power and glory, let them shine through me; your hallowed name, O may I bear with honor, and may your living Kingdom come in me. The Bread of Life, O may I share with honor, and may you feed a hungry world through me. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Rev. OFFERTORY God is Spirit Organ James Southbridge READING OF THE SCRIPTURES Misty Cross Deuteronomy 6:4-9 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. 2 Timothy 1:3-8 Thanksgiving 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and
in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 1 Corinthians 11:1 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. MESSAGE What Legacy Will You Leave?
