Mark: This weekend we hear in Mark's Gospel that Jesus traveled "throughout the whole of Galilee" and "cured many who were sick with various diseases." The Church con nues this work of Jesus in the Sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick. In addi on, to be an essen al part of Jesus' ministry on earth, in the Le er of James we read, Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anoin ng him with oil in the name of the Lord." (James 5:14). People may seek to be anointed for any of several serious reasons such as having long term or terminal illness, preparing for surgery, or even the elderly who could easily become ill. Next Saturday, February 10, has been designated as the 26th World Day of the Sick. This day was ini ated by Pope Saint John Paul II and held annually worldwide near the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes (February 11). Our Diocese will observe this day with a special celebra on at the Cathedral of Christ the Light beginning at 11:00 a.m. Our Bishop has extended an invita on to all who are sick or ill, as well as family members, caregivers and healthcare providers, to observe this day with him and many priests, religious and laity from throughout the Diocese. The World Day of the Sick in Oakland will include Mass, Sacrament of anoin ng of the sick, blessing of caregivers and healthcare providers, distribu on of Holy Water from Lourdes, rosaries and holy cards, and a recep on. No RSVP is necessary. If you know of a neighbor, friend or loved one who could use prayers for healing and hope please invite them, or even bring them yourself, to experience this blessed opportunity. For more informa on, please visit www.oakdiocese.org/wds * * * This week we received a le er dated January 24, 2018, from the Bishop addressed To the Faithful of the Diocese of Oakland. The le er reads: Dear brothers and sisters, On Tuesday we received the wonderful news that Pope Francis has appointed Auxiliary Bishop Myron J. Co a of the Diocese of Sacramento as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Stockton. We rejoice with the people of Stockton, our neighbors, in this good news. The Installa on will take place on March 15, 2018. Bishop Co a is a good friend of mine, a very kind and devout priest and bishop. I look forward to working with him in the upcoming years. We are also grateful to Bishop Stephen E. Blaire, who served the Stockton Diocese so faithfully since 1999. Please join me in praying for him as he enjoys his well-deserved re rement. With the assurance of my prayers and blessings, I am Sincerely Yours in Christ, The Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, SJ Bishop of Oakland

Diocese of Oakland Contact Info on How to Report Abuse or Seek Help Ministering to children and young people is the heart of what Jesus calls His people to do. The mission of the Safe Environment office is to assist the Church in crea ng a safe haven for children, young people and vulnerable adults. The risk of child abuse is greatly reduced by breaking the silence about abuse, especially sexual abuse. Breaking the silence is a cri cal first step to begin the process of educa on, preven on and healing. The Diocesan office of Vic m s Assistance offers a variety of avenues for vic ms and family members to report their experiences to our Office of Vic m Assistance and to be welcomed, to receive pastoral care, and to learn about and access much -needed services. Diocesan staff serving in the Office of Vic m Assistance believe that individuals and communi es are best served through a prompt response to requests for help, respec ul listening, a en on to their needs, and services to help them in the healing process.
