The$ Beacon The First Baptist Church of Dover 301 Walker Rd., Dover, DE 19904 June 2017 Visit the First Baptist Church website at http://www.fbcdover.org Contact Us Reverend Dan Taylor - Pastor Judy Cahall - Church Secretary Mike Metzger - Moderator Debbie Geiser - Newsletter Editor Church Office - 302-674-1980 Email - info@fbcdover.org From the Pastor s Desk Reverend Daniel Taylor I hope that you are enjoying the new look to The Beacon, our church newsletter. If you receive it in the mail it is printed in black and white, but if you view it on the church website, www.fbcdover.org, you can see the color in the formatting and the pictures that are much clearer. We want to be efficient with our newsletter, website, social media and other forms of contact with you and those who want to learn more about our church. Let me ask a favor of you If you would like to continue to receive The Beacon delivered to your residence, please call the church office (302-674-1980) and share that with Judy, the church secretary. If you would like to know when the newsletter has been posted to the website, please contact Judy via email at judy@fbcdover.org and give her your best and current email address. The more current email address we have the easier it will be to contact you and everyone with updates on services and activities within the life of the church. We are so very thankful that Debbie Geiser has volunteered to edit the newsletter for us with gifts that she has used for other organizations. Debbie and her husband, Sam, have been attending for a few months and enjoy being a part of our congregation. As we think of growing in our faith and in the knowledge of Christ I want to invite you to take advantage of every opportunity to gather and learn together and from one another. Partnership is the foundation of growth and when we work and learn together we can both grow. We can t expect to always come just to see what we get or what s in it for us. When we partner we are also helping others get what they want and need. It s an attitude we have when we anticipate coming together. You know, we don t just spend time together on Sundays in classes or in times of worship, we are investing time 1 of 8

with those who challenge, encourage and uplift us. Look for and create opportunities for learning, sharing and growing together. Sunday is not the only day to make it happen. Book studies, discussion groups, inviting others to eat out, getting together so that y o u c a n e a c h share and grow together. Let us continually grow. The more we know Christ, the more we ll want to know and the more we ll grow. The more we grow, the more we ll want to go and invite others to join us on our journey. Growing together in Christ, Rev. Dan Taylor Dear Pastor Taylor, I want to thank you and the church fellowship for holding my sister-in-law and me in prayer during recent surgery. We feel very blessed to have surgery over and be healing. Thank you for prayers and cards. Sincerely, Jane Meder News of former staff member: We have received word of the death of the Reverend Larin R. Kerr on January 28, 2017. Larin served as the Minister of Christian Education and Youth Pastor at First Baptist from 1971-73. Before coming to Dover, he and his wife, Julie, had served as missionaries to the Hopi people in Polacca, AZ and Navajo people in Keams Canyon. In 1973, Larin, Julie, and their five children returned to the mission field serving the Crow (Apsalooka) Tribe at Burgess Memorial Baptist Church, Crow Agency, MT for eight years and the Rainy Mountain Kiowa Indian Baptist Church, Mountain View, OK for eighteen years before retiring due to ill health. Larin is survived by his wife, Julie, their five children, eighteen grandchildren, and twentyseven great-grandchildren. If you would like to contact Julie, call the church office for her address. The other day, I went to get the mail from the mail box. I looked at it, and all but 2 pieces of mail were asking for a donation. I know that we are asked to be a giving person, and God loves a cheerful giver, but what is Giving? Do we give when we feel like it only? What does the Bible tell us about Giving? In Proverbs 11:24-28 we are given some answers to what kind of Givers we should be. Praise God for all of the riches he has given to us so we can be a giver. Irv Culver Chairman Board of Deacons Giving What is Giving? Do we give of our time? Do we give of our money? God gave us his Son. One Great Hour of Sharing is one of the four annual offerings received by American Baptist Churches. This offering makes the love of Christ real for individuals and communities around the world who suffer the effects of disaster, conflict, poverty or severe economic hardship, and for those who find themselves refugees or displaced within their home country. Have you ever wondered how the gifts that you give to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering get to the places where they are put to work? This is the responsibility of the World Relief Committee. The committee's purpose is to support, enable, and encourage emergency relief, refugee work, and disaster rehabilation and development assistance. This offering will be received during the month of June and our goal is $3600.00. Please prayerfully consider what you might give.
