January 20, 2019 2nd Sunday In Ordinary Time Second Sunday In Ordinary Time I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least. - Dorothy Day Matthew 6:33 Dear Parish Family, Welcome back to the Green! As of this past Monday, the Church is again in Ordinary Time. This liturgical term does not refer to a ho-hum state of being, but to the ordering, or counting of the Sundays and weeks to follow. Until the First Sunday of Lent on March 10, we will hear about events in Jesus life as recorded by the evangelist, Luke. As we journey through this time, let us reflect on God s merciful love in our lives and how we might respond to that love. As we grow in our relationships with others, go to our workplaces, and experience the ordinary events of our daily lives, let us also be sure to take time for God each day. Let us take time for quiet and to listen to God speaking to us in our hearts. Whether our days are filled with joy, or are times of struggle and worry, we can be assured of God s strength and support with us by taking the time to listen. ************************************************************ As of this past Friday, January 18, and lasting until next Friday, January 25, the Christian community throughout the world is observing the International Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. For over 100 years, Christians around the world have taken part in an octave (eight days) of prayer for visible Christian unity. By annually observing this week, Christians move toward the fulfillment of Jesus prayer at the Last Supper that all may be one. (cf. John 17:21) The theme of this year's observance is "Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue (cf. Dt. 16:18-20P. With all others who have been baptized into Christ, let us pray that unity, even with our diversity, may be achieved, and that the separation between us in the different denominations be eliminated. *********************************************************** This Saturday, January 26, is Texas Catholic Pro-Life Day. Two Masses will be celebrated that morning, both at 10:00 a.m. Bishop Michael Mulvey will preside at the Mass at San Jose Parish, and Bishop Patrick Zurek will be the presider at the one at St. Louis Parish. Before each of these Masses, at 9:15, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed, led by young people of each of these parishes. Please come and join in prayer with others in the diocese for this most important need of respecting all life. Last, but certainly not least, along with welcoming back the Green, this weekend we welcome Father Cyrus Gallagher, OFM, Cap. To speak about the work being done by UNBOUND. Founded by lay Catholics, UNBOUND is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 18 developing countries since 1981, empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and reach their potential. UNBOUND s unique sponsorship is highly personalized, matching a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the United States who care about and encourages that person. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps to provide much-needed nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for families and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the dignity of every person in their local community. Please join me in welcoming Father Gallagher to St. Vincent de Paul. God bless you, always, and in all ways. Father Ed

Austin, Texas -1389 Shirley@svdpparish.org Gratefully Giving: We are a Stewardship Parish To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. (1 Corinthians 12:7) St. Paul tells us that God has blessed each of us for a reason. How has God blessed you? Are you using your gifts according to God s plan? How are you helping to build God s kingdom here on earth? Remember that if you don t do the work God planned for you, no one else can do it. Live the life God has intended for you, feel His love, peace and joy! The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul wish to thank our parishioners for their generosity during the first quarter of this fiscal year (October, November and December). We posted 81 assists helping 236 people, spent 278 hours visiting with those in need and traveled 1220 miles. We spent $18,870 paying rents and $5,801 for utilities. We also assisted with car repairs and HEB gas cards to help our neighbors in need get to their jobs. The Vincentians of our parish ask that you pray for those who are suffering financial crisis and for those who are visiting them. Please prayerfully consider joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Meetings are every 2 nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm in P2. HUNGER AWARENESS MINISTRY ISTRY The Hunger Awareness Ministry would like to extend heartfelt thanks for all of the food donations our generous parishioners make each week. Our growing community means continually increasing needs for food donations. In addition to the 1 pound bags of dried pinto beans and rice normally collected for the Vincentian Family Center other needed items for the food pantry are non-perishables, like Canned vegetables, Canned fruit, Canned soup, Top Ramen, Peanut Butter, Macaroni n cheese, Canned meat and tuna, Pasta and Cereal. Thank you for your support. Egg Cartons are also needed! For any questions please contact Hunger Awareness Ministry Lead, Laura Ashley-Wilson, 512-619 619-0143 LIFE IS A GIFT FROM GOD..PSALM 127:3 Did you know? Former President Ronald Reagan designated January 22, 1984, as the first National Sanctity of Human Life Day. The significance behind that date is that it fell on the 11th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case which legalized abortion in our country beginning in 1973. In the past 45 years, over 60 million children have died. Please pray for an end to abortion. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION ITIATION FOR ADULTS Have you been thinking about becoming a Roman Catholic? Perhaps you have been attending Mass with your family or friends and just never got around to it. Maybe you aren t quite sure if you are ready to take this step and want to know more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment. You might have been raised as a Catholic but never had all of your Sacraments of Initiation Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Then you may be ready for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). If you have children over the age of 7 who have not received their sacraments, we have an RCIA process adapted for children, too!
