FATHER DON S REFLECTION MK 6:7-13 Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits So they went off and preached repentance drove out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. They were taught by the Master. They saw his work in person and it was finally their time to put it into action. They were no longer students, they were Jesus chosen ones, sent into the world around them. They were armed with nothing more than a walking stick and their spirits to preach and heal all who were open to Jesus message. Jesus told them that they would depend on the hospitality of the towns they visited. They were to trust the generosity of the people. Would there be failures? Well, Jesus gave them a plan for that when that would happen. The best gift they had was being ordained by Jesus to carry his mission. His spirit was with them always. I think it is important that Jesus sent them by twos. They did not have to go alone. They were given someone they could lean on, someone who had the same mission as they did. I believe that for the most part, ministry is not an individual thing. It involves many people to impact the church and its mission. Jesus knew the men he was sending out. He picked them for this moment. Did they have all the answers? Of course not, only the Master does. Their first tasks were repentance and healing. The same place that John the Baptist began was the same starting point for the disciples. It s where we all need to begin. We are all called to seek repentance to reconnect with the Lord. We are called to heal our relationship with Jesus before we can ever reach out to others to do the same. We are all called to exorcise the demons from within our lives so that we can have a full relationship with God. If we are called to be disciples, how do we answer the call? Are there like-minded people that can go out to do ministry in our community? Within our parish, there are many opportunities to reach out beyond ourselves: the wonderful work the people in the St. Vincent De Paul Society do in our community, the Stephen Ministry program that walks with people who are hurting mentally or spiritually, or those who take communion to the shut-ins and the nursing homes. Anytime you donate food, clothing, school supplies, or monetary contributions, you are answering the call to be sent forth into the community by Jesus himself. These are only a few of the many things this parish does in the name of Jesus and the spreading of the gospel. There are many among us who are spiritually hungry. There are many who would love to have the demons that taunt their hearts removed. We are all called to take care of our brothers and sisters. If nothing else, we are called to show hospitality to those who come in the name of Jesus. We are called to show kindness to those who are lost and need a place to anchor their lives. Everyone has a piece in the mission of the church; take time to see where you fit best. God has called each of us by name, we belong to him. Find ways to be Christ for others. The Master is calling. I Have Called You By Name; You are Mine... Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. Music Ministry - How Can I Keep From Singing? By Mary Anne Fifarek Well, if truth be known, I simply cannot. Maybe it is a gene thing, for my immediate family likes to carry a tune or two. Mom and Dad were in the church choir for years, while my brother and sisters have been music-centered since eighth grade. Throughout high school, I was in chorus, choir, singing performances, and all the school plays. Somewhere Over the Rainbow forever pulled at my heartstrings. When I left my home state and moved here, the most enduring and rewarding group I joined was the St. John s Choir..There are times when I am just too beat from a heavy week and want to be at Mass as a silent observer with time for only God and me. But then the music starts, melodies I know flood the air, my hands open the program and out comes a voice from within (so much for my silence). Then I remember two things: the first going back to elementary school, when the sisters explained that singing is actually praying twice, and who does not need that nowadays? The second is my personal belief that if God gives you a talent, He expects you to not waste it, but to share it with others. Consequently, I sing not only for my own well-being but also to praise the Lord for all the marvelous things He bestows on all of us each day. With that in my mind, how could I possibly keep from singing? How have you been called by God? Have an answer? Send it to Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org. On the first weekend of each month the K of C leads the rosary before all Masses. The rosary will start 20 minutes before Mass except for the 11:30 a.m. Mass. At the 11:30 a.m. Mass, the rosary will begin at 11 a.m. Come and join us as we lead the rosary. We have much to be thankful for and you can also include any special intentions. 9
