Liturgy This Week s Readings ~ May 6, 2012 Sixth Sunday of Easter First Reading Acts: 9:26-31 Second Reading: 1 John 3:18-24 Gospel: John 15:1-8 In today s Gospel Jesus makes it clear that his leaving is not everything. He promises that his disciples will live on in his love by keeping the commandments. He promises them joy in their continued union, and he is glad to call them friends. Jesus reminds them that he has made known to them all that he heard from the Father. The challenge for them is to go forward and bear fruit by loving one another. God sent his only Son that we might have life through him. Others are to have life through us. In the reading from Acts, Peter comes to realize that this gift is to be extended to uncircumcised Gentiles as well as Jews. Anyone who reverences God and acts according to God s will is acceptable to God. As you reflect on Jesus calling you his friend, what thoughts and feelings come to you? How might you respond this week? When in the last two weeks did you recognized God s love in your life? Which people do you find most difficult to notice and be concerned about? Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. Unless otherwise noted all Masses are on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. For more information please call: 253-838-2240 Holyrood ~ 205 NE 205th St. Shoreline, WA 98155 Calvary ~ 5041-35th Ave. NE Seattle, WA 98105 On Memorial Day, Monday May 28, 2012 Mass will be celebrated at the four Archdiocesan Catholic Cemeteries. All are invited to attend. Holyrood Cemetery 206-363-8404 10:30 a.m.- Celebrant: Most Rev. Ron Funke, SJ Gethsemane Cemetery 253-838-2240 10:30 a.m.- Celebrant: Most Rev. J. Peter Sartain Archbishop of Seattle 12:15 p.m. Mass in Vietnamese with the Vietnamese Community Seventh Sunday of Easter ~ May 20, 2012 First Reading: Acts 1:15-17 Psalm 103 Second Reading: 1 John 4:11-16 Gospel: John 17:11b-19 Throughout the Easter season, the Acts of the Apostles have shown the Holy Spirit working with the first disciples to increase the number of believers and extend the church beyond Jerusalem. Today, in the dramatic way Saint Matthias is chosen to replace Judas, Acts shows how completely the early community trusts the Spirit. The Gospel shows us how completely Jesus loves the community he leaves behind but does not abandon, as he returns to the Father. In the midst of a hostile world, besieged by the power of the Evil One, our love for one another will protect us from that evil and bear witness that we remain in God and God in us. Do you have a family member or neighbor in or from our parish who would like to stay in touch with the St John Community? We would like to expand our Ministry to the homebound. In addition to taking Communion to these people we would like to reach out with a phone call or greeting card to say hello and that we are thinking about them. We will also need volunteers. Please contact Loretta Fletcher at 784-3529 or Marion Johnson at 782-5084 if you would be interested, or if you know of someone who might enjoy this type of outreach. Gluten Free hosts are available. If you need a gluten free host please come back to the Sacristy before Mass and let the Sacristan know. If you have borrowed a pyx to take communion to a loved one, please remember to bring it back when it is not needed anymore. Also, if you have served as Eucharistic Minister or Lector and forgotten to take your cross off, please bring it back. We are running low. Thanks!

Parish Life Just so you know... St John s share of the Annual Catholic Appeal for this year is $70,006. If we are unable to meet the monetary goal that the Archdiocese has set for us, we will have to pay the difference. The goal for each parish is determined by what was given the previous year. If we are blessed & go over our goal, that amount is returned to the parish. Our parish goal is 100% participation! Please return your ACA envelope today! Thank you! The Liturgy Commission would like to offer our deepest, heartfelt thanks to: All who served and assisted with masses during Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. Especially thanked are servers at Holy Thursday, all Lectors, all Eucharistic ministers, all Ushers and Sacristans. He was a farmer on the land of a certain wealthy nobleman of Madrid. He never missed daily Mass. The neighbors accused him, to his employer, of neglecting his work in order to hear Mass, but Isidore replied, I know, sir, that I am your servant, but I have another Master as well, to whom I owe service and obedience. The employer went to the farm one morning very early. When he found out that Isidore did not begin his work until a later hour, he went toward him to scold him. But he was surprised to find two strangers, each with a team of white oxen, plowing, one on each side of Isidore. When he approached them, they disappeared. He said to Isidore, Tell me, who are these two men who were plowing with you just now? Isidore said, I have not seen any person. I ask no help from anyone but God each morning at Holy Mass. The nobleman understood that the two men he had seen were angels sent by God to help his servant, in return for his hearing Mass faithfully.
