Breaking Free From The Spirit Of FEAR Part II

I AM FREE

Two kinds of fear: Fear that is good - keeps us from driving 200kph, picking up a rattler snake, jumping off the side of a building, or other foolish things that you can think of and Fear that is harmful - This is the "spirit of fear" which comes from Satan mentioned in this particular passage. This fear paralyzes us, keeps us from doing things we could or should do.

A. Satan is a master at using our fears. He can keep us from being an effective Christian, or happy person by using our own fears He uses the "spirit of fear" to: 2. Make us ineffective a. Many times we do not share our faith with someone because of fear. What will they think of me? What if I turn them off?

What if I mess up? They probably won t listen to me anyway! These are the common fears Satan uses to make us ineffective witnesses! b. Sometimes we don t get involved in service because of fear I can t teach a Sunday School class, I can t help in the nursery I could never be a minister or a missionary I can t sing on the praise team I can t play an instrument on the praise team I can t share mytestimony Fear can keep us from serving God

B. Satan s Method for using Fear: 1. He uses our past sins 2. He uses the possibilities of the future 3. He uses the potential of failure 4. He uses the certainty of criticism Satan is a master at using our fears to stop us, to bind us, and to rob us! We are not to be controlled by fear. We are meant to live by faith not by fear. We are meant to have faith in God.

In Matthew 17:20 Jesus told His disciples I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it would move. Nothing would be impossible."

There is, after all, a certain sense of credibility in Paul s life. He knew stress. He had struggled with the ingratitude of individuals in the churches he had founded. In his letter to the church at Corinth he details some of the struggles he had endured: SHIPWRECKED STONED BEATEN IMPRISONED COLD NAKED - HUNGRY. He had suffered the ravages of poverty and ill health.

Many people today, faced by the enormous challenges of life, find themselves faced with what the New Testament calls THE SPIRIT OF FEAR that is to say, a strong sense of wondering if they have the necessary ability to deal with the pressures of life. Often they feel OVERWHELMED ANXIOUS WORRIED about the future. So when Paul speaks of a spirit of POWER LOVE - and SOUND MIND - is there not any of us who does not long for these things?

According to this passage of Scripture, the first crucially thing about God is that God does not give us a spirit of fear and timidity. If God does not give us the spirit of timidity, then where does this spirit come from? If the spirit of fear does not come from God, then the spirit of timidity must come from the Enemy. The spirit of timidity comes from Satan. The spirit of timidity comes from satanic spirits. The spirit of timidity comes from demonic spirits. Therefore, there are a few things that we need to know about the spirit of fear.

1. The first thing that we need to know about the spirit of fear is that the spirit of fear may be positive or negative.

2. The second thing that we need to know about the spirit of fear is that the spirit of fear can be either temporary or permanent.

3. The third thing that we need to know about the spirit of fear is that the spirit of fear was born in the Garden Eden.

4. According to Jesus, FEAR is the result of LITTLE FAITH or a LACK OF FAITH.

Matthew 8:23-27, Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, Lord, save us! We re going to drown! Jesus responded, Why are you afraid? You have so little faith! Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed. Who is this man? they asked. Even the winds and waves obey him!

Jesus asks, Why are you afraid? and provides the answer, You have little faith. The parallel account in Mark 4:40phrases it this way, Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith? Jesus is declaring Fear is the opposite of faith. If you have faith, you will not have fear. If you have fear, is it because you have little faith? How can we banish fear from our lives? By growing in faith. The more faith we have in God, the less fear will have an effect on us.

5.According to John: Fear is the result of a lack of love. According to 1 John 4:18, perfect love (meaning: complete love) casteth out fear (KJV). Therefore, according to John, fear is the result of a lack of love or a lack of complete or perfect love.

1 John 4:18 (NIV)18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. Here is how this works: Love for God The more we love God, the less fear we will have. It is a matter of trust. When we realize that God will take care of us, it relieves our fear.

Romans 8:28 (NIV)28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Love of God relieves our fears!

6. Finally: According to the Scriptures, FEAR sows the seeds of one s own destruction. In Job 3:25 Job makes the statement: For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me (KJV). The New International Version renders that same statement as follows: What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me. There is a WARNING in this for all of us. The WARNING is: Be careful what you fear. It just may sow the seeds of your own destruction!

According to 2 Timothy 1:7, the second crucially important thing that we need to know about God is that: Although He does not give us the spirit of fear, He does give us some other spirits.

1. According to Paul: God Gives us the Spirit of Love According to our Lord, the greatest commandment is to Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind (Matthew 22:37) and to love thy neighbor as thyself (Matthew 22:39). Jesus also tells us that by our love all men will know that we are His disciples (John 13:35).

2. According to Paul: God Gives us the Spirit of Power In Acts 1:8, Jesus tells his disciples: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (NIV). According to this, Jesus suggests that the Holy Spirit is power AND gives power. The Holy Spirit is the source of power. The Holy Spirit is the giver of power.

3. According to Paul: God Gives us the Spirit of Self-Control Many people have difficulty with the concept of self-control. That s because of a wrong conception of the term itself. Many people define self-control as controlling oneself. However, the Lord has revealed to me that self-control is really putting oneself under the control of the Holy Spirit!

Most of the time our harmful fears are the result of wrong thinking. But something happens when we are saved and begin to trust God. Our mind is renewed! Romans 12:2 (NIV) 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. In my way of thinking I may be afraid I won t make it financially - IF I trust in God and accept His way of thinking, I will be assured He will take care of me!

I believe that the prophet, Zechariah, is alluding to this concept when he says that the Lord said to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit, saith the Lord of hosts (Zechariah 4:6, KJV). The New International Version renders the statement: So he said to me, This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.

How, then, can people be set free from the spirit of fear? The answer is found in the Book of Psalms. The answer is found in Psalm 56:3. It is there that the psalmist says to the Lord: When I am afraid, I will trust in You! (NIV). Therefore, the next time the spirit of fear comes upon you, bind it, in the name of Jesus! Cast it out, in the name of Jesus! TELL IT to get out, in the name of Jesus! TELL IT to stay out, in the name of Jesus!

THE LORD is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear? THE LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? WHEN the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. THOUGH an host should encamp against me, my heart shall NOT fear: THOUGH WAR should rise against me, IN THIS will I be confident.

ONE THING have I desired of the Lord, THAT will I seek after; THAT I may dwell in the house of the Lord ALL the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, AND to enquire in His temple. For IN THE TIME OF TROUBLE He shall hide me in His pavilion: in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me; HE shall set me up upon a rock. And NOW shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: THEREFORE, I will offer in HIS TABERNACLE sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will SING PRAISES unto the Lord.

HEAR, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: HAVE MERCY also upon me, and ANSWER ME. When thou saidst, SEEK ye MY FACE; MY HEART said unto Thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. HIDE NOT Thy face far from me; PUT NOT Thy servant away in anger: THOU hast been my help; LEAVE ME NOT, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

WHEN my father and my mother forsake me, THEN the Lord will take me up. TEACH ME Thy way, O Lord, and LEAD ME in a plain path, because of mine enemies. DELIVER ME NOT over unto the will of mine enemies: for FALSE WITNESSES are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

I HAD FAINTED, unless I had BELIEVED to see the GOODNESS of the Lord in the land of the living. WAIT on the Lord: BE of good courage, and HE shall STRENGTHEN thine heart. WAIT, I say, on THE LORD! (Psalm 27, KJV

HOLY FATHER, I acknowledge you as my God and Father and thank you for the privilege and power of prayer. I THANK YOU for the blood of Jesus that cleanses me from all sin and unrighteousness. I THANK YOU for your precious HOLY SPIRIT who is willing and able to lead, guide, and direct me in all truth and righteousness.

FATHER GOD, In the Name of Jesus, I ask now that you FORGIVE ME for ALL known and unknown sins, of ALL sins of omission and commission, of ALL sins committed intentionally and unintentionally, of ALL sins of thought, word, and deed!

ESPECIALLY, FATHER GOD, I ask now, In the Name of Jesus, that you forgive me for allowing THE SPIRIT OF FEAR to enter me and influence me against Your will. IN THE NAME OF JESUS, the spirit of whoredoms and cast it out of my life now and forever.

FATHER GOD, I ask now that You REPLACE the spirit of fear with Your HOLY SPIRIT. REPLACE it with the Spirit of Christ. REPLACE it with the fruit of the Spirit in order that (from this day forward) I might glorify YOU in ALL that I think, in ALL that I say, and in ALL that I do. HOLY FATHER, these things I ASK, these things I CLAIM by faith, these things I THANK You for IN the Name of Jesus, ON the strength of His shed blood, and THROUGH Your Divine HOLY SPIRIT! AMEN!
