Rev. Bob Brearley WE GATHER TO PRAISE Let us now prepare our hearts and minds to worship God. On the Day of Pentecost we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit descending in a mighty rush of wind and flame to inspire the church s proclamation of Christ s rising and to empower its mission and ministry to the world. Beginning with the sound of wind and chimes, our worship this morning centers on the continuing work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the community of faith today. Processional of the Spirit (281) *Call to Worship Holy Spirit, Come to Us (Veni Sancte Spiritus) SSPC Acolytes One: A mighty wind has blown, and tongues of fire have danced! ALL: The presence of the Spirit is with us, as Jesus the Christ promised. One: The Holy Spirit moves and gathers us into community. ALL: We come together to nurture and challenge one another, One: To celebrate God and to witness to the love of Christ for all people. ALL: God s power is at work in and through us as we worship in the Spirit on this Pentecost Sunday. One: We sing praises to the risen Lord! Taize Community Marj Smith * Please stand if able. *Opening Hymn 291 Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness spirit

*Prayer of Confession (All) Silence for Personal Confession In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. Rev. Alan Dyer Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, or speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. We take ourselves too seriously. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. We bring our burdens and our needs to you even as we pray for your Spirit to set us free. *Assurance of Pardon *Gloria Patri h.w. greatorex Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. WE SHARE OUR LIFE & GIFTS Joys and Concerns of the Church Preparation for Prayer Gracious Spirit, Dwell With Me K. Lee Scott Prayer of Thanksgiving and the Lord s Prayer (All) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. It is a joy to introduce our summer interns this morning. Eliza Warner and Patrick Jetter are faithful young people who will be helping with all the summertime happenings at our church and on many mission adventures, including the hosting of youth groups as part of our BRIDGE mission. Please greet them and prayer for them as they work for the Lord at SSPC in the coming weeks. We thank God for them! Offertory Listen to the Rustle of a Mighty Wind Chancel Choir Buryl Red

ALL: Thanks be to God. New Testament Lesson Acts 2:1-13 Page 1692 NT Before the congregation hears the word proclaimed, the Prayer for Illumination turns our attention to God to ask that we hear God s word in order to better know God s will for our lives. Beginning on Pentecost and running through the summer months, our prayer for illumination will be in the form of the song, Gracious Spirit, Heed Our Pleading. Consider the words you sing as we invite the Holy Spirit to stir something new within us. Prayer for Illumination 287 Sermon *Affirmation of Faith (All) Signs of the Spirit Rev. Bob Brearley The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

WE GATHER AT THE TABLE Invitation to the Table Prayer of Thanksgiving Sharing the Bread and the Cup The practice of receiving communion by intinction is an ancient one. When taking Communion by intinction, the body of the Church acts together, moving as a community towards the Table. Worshippers are invited to come forward, take a piece of bread, and intinct or dip it in the cup, place it in their mouth, and return to their seats. Gluten free bread is available for those with gluten allergies. Additionally, an elder is available to bring communion to you where you are seated. Communion Hymn 538 Hallelujah! Bishop At the conclusion of worship, the acolyte will carry the flame representing the Holy Spirit of Pentecost outside where it will be used to light the palm branches from this past Palm Sunday. This act marks the end of our journey Lent and Easter. The palms we waved in celebration of the beginning of Holy Week when burned by the flames of Pentecost will become the ashes used to mark our foreheads on Ash Wednesday at the start of the next Lenten season. If You Are New Here. Whether you are visiting from out-of-town, a seasonal resident, or searching for a church home, we are delighted that you are worshiping with us today. If you are interested in receiving more information about membership or the ministries of our congregation, please indicate that on the Friendship Register as it is passed down your pew at the beginning of worship so that we can be in touch with you soon. Child Care. Children of all ages are welcome in worship. If you prefer, a nursery is available for children, birth through age five. The nursery is located in the Children s Wing at the rear of the church. If You Are in Need of Prayer. You may fill out a prayer request card (available in the pews) and place it in the offering plate or hand it to an usher. To Aid in Worship. A Rocking Room with live video of the service is available in the chapel located outside of the front right doors of the sanctuary. Hearing assistance devices and large print hymnals and Bibles may be obtained from the ushes. Sermons Online. To hear sermons online, visit www.sspres.org/sermons.

Reeves Family Love Offering: During the next few weeks, we will be collecting a love offering to help a local family affected by tragedy. This past February, the Reeves Family home in Brunswick caught fire and claimed the lives of two of their small children. A third child and the mother have only recently been released from the hospital after extensive treatment. Church members Karleen & John Thompson have been in close contact with the family for several months seeking to identify ways that the church and community can assist them as they rebuild their lives. As part of those efforts, the Session has approved a love offering with the goal of raising $5,000.00 to help reestablish this family into a home and provide them with some of the material possessions that they lost in the fire. Please consider making a donation in worship today while also continuing to pray for renewed strength and hope for this family in their time of need.
