The Year Before Us Today s worship marks the last Sunday in January of 2018, so it is time to look forward to new opportunities for worship and fellowship. On next Sunday, Super Bowl Sunday in the liturgical calendar, we will observe our first communion of 2018 in both morning services. I remind you that the memorial service for Bill Jones will follow that afternoon, at 2 pm, in the sanctuary. The family will receive friends afterward. On the following Tuesday, February 6, at 6 pm, the Baptist Men will hold their first meeting of 2018. Tickets can be purchased for $5. The Lenten and Easter schedules are a bit odd this year: Ash Wednesday will be on Valentine s Day, February 14. Despite the generally festive tone of that day usually, we will begin our Lenten discipline with a somber service in which we take the ashen mark of the cross upon our foreheads. Our winter church conference is on the following Wednesday, February 21. Easter is on April Fool s day, April 1. No fooling! By the way, during the church conference on February 21, the congregation will be asked to consider and approve a revised church constitution. The By-Laws Committee, chaired by Bill Self, has been working assiduously throughout the fall to give attention to documents related to our church governance. You may recall that they brought a revised articles of incorporation to the church s attention early in 2017 and have been looking at documents related to our constitution and by-laws for the last several months. We will have advance copies of the proposed constitution available next Sunday for your perusal. The copies will be located in the anterooms outside the sanctuary. We continue to need volunteers for our youth church basketball league. We have had a great response from the community, and our gym is filled with young people and their parents. Even if you don t know much about basketball, you can help in the concession stand and we offer on the job training for those who would like to learn how to keep book or work the scoreboard. Games start at 10 on Saturday morning and continue until 3 pm, for those of you who would just like to come out and watch. And don t forget that the Vineville men s basketball team plays on Monday nights in our gym. Speaking of volunteers, remember that the church consignment sale will take place March 1-3. That means set-up for the consignment sale and the receiving and organizing of materials will take place the prior weekend, February 23 25. If you can help in some way, please contact Donna Wood or Jennifer Kelly. This is a very important outreach ministry, but it is also amazingly labor intensive. I confess, January and February are my least favorite months of the year. I am not that fond of cold weather, there is so much darkness, and people are sick all the time (or worse). But this time of year does provide one great blessing: anticipation! I draw great pleasure contemplating all of the great events that await us in the future. I think particularly of meeting my family and friends in the mountains to go river rafting and of the church camping and river rafting trip in July. By the way, the dates for the church camping and river rafting trip this year are July 19-21. Set aside those days in your vacation schedule now! And remember that Vacation Bible School is scheduled for June 25-29. Make plans to take part in it. A word from your pastor, Dr. Sympathy We extend Christian sympathy to the following families: Don and Ann Young and Eddie and Donna Wood in the death of Don s brother, Harold. Alisa Rehberg and her family in the death of her father, Jim Wynens. The family of Mildred Allen. Jewell Hasty and her family in the death of her niece, Betty Parker Evans. In Memorium Mildred Allen April 5, 1920 - January 19, 2018

We need volunteers to help with the Consignment Sale. Contact Donna Wood if you would like to assist. Men s Fellowship Men's Fellowship will meet Tuesday, February 6 at 6:30 pm in the Activities Building. Shane Buerster, a Mercer student and Z Beans Founder and CEO will be the speaker. A three-week trip to El Oro, Ecuador through The Mercer on Mission Program served as a catalyst to bring awareness to the economic challenges of the farmers in El Oro. The goal of Shane's company has been to bring opportunities to farmers in El Oro, and to consumers in the United States through their coffee production. A portion of the proceeds go to the Mercer on Mission program. Tickets are $5. Fall Bazaar A Tribute: The Gift Shoppe of the Fall Bazaar which remained opened for 3 months in 2017 was a big part of the Fall Bazaar this year with over $ 6,000. including a tidy amount from a benefactor. Most of the success is due to a perky little lady who is a master at purchasing, organizing, and managing the Gift Shoppe- Violet Stover, along with help from her workers. Thanks, Violet! Thanks, helpers! We look forward to The Gift Shoppe being opened for three months this year as well. Steering Committee: Remember our meeting today in Room 106 at 4 p.m. Youth Today: Youth choir at 4:00 pm in the choir room, dinner at 5:00 pm, and Pajama Party game show until 6:30 pm. Wear appropriate pajamas, and come with your game face on! Wednesday: Our first group (Camille, Mary Margaret, and Lexi) will lead the first kingdom kids lesson while other youth members assist and participate at 6:35 pm. Thank you all for your willingness to lead. Please look over your lessons again to prepare! Group 2 will teach on February 7th. Next Sunday: Extended youth choir from 4:00-5:15 pm and dinner until 5:45 pm. If youth are interested in going to watch the game somewhere, let me know and we can plan on it!
